16 Minute Quarters Again?

Any chance they'll go back to 16 minute quarters again particularly if we have a compressed fixture because of any further COVID disruptions?

This is what the ladder would look like if the whole year had been 16 minute quarters.

Well it probably wouldn't have turned out exactly like that but ....

Shorter qtrs means less ads.

The TV stations/AFL need every dollar they can get, so unless it's games every 4 days or so, they will resist this as hard as they can.

I hated the short quarters and hope it doesn't happen.

Really hope they don't move to shorter quarters, I think that would take away a key advantage we have by having a mature, fit, but also realitively young list compared to some of the other potential contenders like Richmond, Geelong and West Coast.

No way they can - they can't play half a season under one set of rules and half under another. If anything they may cut back to 17 games but even then I can't see it happening. This will probably be a minor disruption and they'll work around the bye rounds giving them flexibility. I still think we have a 22 game season.

Why not? They seem content to play half a quarter under one set of rules and half under another.

Surely, they won't jump to 16 minute qtrs. We're half way through a season and there's an ok probability of this lockdown running it's course in 7 days ?.

Not sure what I disliked more about the 2020 season. Watching games under lockdown or the 16 minute quarters where clubs where struggling to bang on 45 points a game.

Please don't bring this garbage back into the AFL.

I'd think there'd be no chance of them changing mid season to 16 minute quarters unless we go into a significant lockdown for a few months. Which I don't think will happen.

That would suit us we've got a tough last month

God no! Did not help us last year.

Would rather see the season called off.  There should be a moratorium on any rule changes once set pre-season.

The other potential worst case scenario issue this raises is how keen (or not) would players and coaches be to go into hubs again?

i'll ask mrs cotchin and get back to you

There's no way they can do this. But there's likely no need to either.

The initial lockdown last year was substantial because the entire country shut down.

Right now only Victoria is in the weeds. Only four clubs are going to be here this week (the Dogs, us, Geelong and Collingwood).

With byes coming up, there is some flexibility in getting games arranged in other states and territories.

Like steak only cooked on one side and chips without salt washed down with flat beer, no thanks.

16 minute quarters is hidden inflation.

Not if the break between quarters is longer to offset shorter quarters. The marketers could then play more ads during the longer breaks.

Shouldn’t happen, playing almost half a season under 20min quarters and then dropping to 16 would seem blatantly unfair. Though going on the AFL’s history I could see it happening.

Personally I think 20min quarters suit us more as we usually finish strong, last week being the exception to that which I would put more down to a poor mental lapse than fitness.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
