Agree very much. While fully dosed will become important the more first jabs the better.

60% first dose coverage for 60-70 year olds is pathetic

AS I have said before DJ I have two pairs of friends who in the 70+ group who will not get AZ. Converse to that I was talking to a 35 year old this morning who had AZ a month ago. He has a sister in the UK who told him Australians are nuts get AZ asap. He rang another sister who works in public injection site who said come into today we have AZ aplenty in fact every day vials are destroyed because no one is there to use it all. His sister in the UK told him the problem in Australia is not enough people have died. Everyone in the UK knows of someone who has died.

NSW border about to be closed and up there they are expecting over 100 Covid positive cases tomorrow (78 today)  The whole of NSW has been declared a red zone by Victoria

There's simply no choice at this point but for the NSW clubs to stay in Victoria.

Sydney's only drawn to have two home games left anyway, having had one of them flipped earlier in the year. Three straight games at Marvel in Rounds 20-22.

The key will be whether the AFL can get the players' families down here to be with them.

Scary what’s going on in Sydney. hopefully that actually start locking down the city now

if Vic gets a new flare up the season could be in trouble. Fingers crossed

The families of the 2 Sydney teams will almost certainly only have until midnight today and after that permits and14 days isolation/quarantine?

The AFL have often been ahead of the stringent government rulings (of late) so a plan might be in place already

Could be at least a few more weeks (months?) with the high Covid numbers up there so the Swans & Giants will be staying put in Victoria for now

Players were promised no longer than three weeks away from families, home etc. For the NSW teams this Tuesday marks three weeks. Why on earth would the AFL make that promise?! No one should be making these sorts of promises. And no one should expect them to be honoured. It’s covid ffs.

They'll need an exception, surely, as I can't imagine they had plans to fly down today. I think the AFL's hope before today's numbers was to play the Sydney derby this coming weekend in Canberra, so they probably weren't thinking about keeping them in Victoria.

Gill's comment on three weeks was at the time in response to the Victorian outbreak. IIRC he said that after Victoria had already been put into lockdown. Our situation on the day we went into lockdown was very different to how long Gladys left it in NSW before she implemented lockdown.

The point being, at the time Gill said what he said, governments were reacting quickly to lockdowns: each of Queensland, WA and Victoria had, multiple times in 2021, locked down at the sight of barely 10 cases, each time stopping outbreaks in their tracks. Here, NSW has gone against that grain, and as a result have a multi-week/month lockdown ahead.

Sydney and GWS will need to decide if they want to fly down their families and have them quarantine for 14 days. They are not going anywhere for a long while. Sydney may be here well into September.

They'll find a way for the Sydney teams to hub in Victoria & keep playing.  They have to otherwise the season will be derailed

But my fear is the disease getting out of control in NSW.  The footy could end up being of secondary concern if the delta varient escapes into the other States

As someone else here commented,  NSW could end up being isolated like an island State

IIRC one shot of AZ and Pfizer does not confer meaningful protection against Delta.

If we don’t have a new outbreak (In Vic) it’ll be a minor miracle IMO. All those people returning to Vic having spent the school holidays in NSW are self-isolating in their own homes. What could possibly go wrong? ?

Better than nothing perhaps:

“… a Canadian study that's still awaiting peer review found that a single dose of Pfizer's shot was 56 percent effective at preventing symptomatic infections caused by Delta after two weeks. That rate was 67 percent for AstraZeneca's shot and 72 percent for Moderna's.”

The NT miner had Delta, as did I think the Sandringham dry cleaner, so it escaped twice into the NT and Victoria, but in neither instance did an outbreak occur.

Part luck, but part better management by the Victorian, Queensland, SA and NT governments IMO.

I think there's little doubt now that all States and Territories will, if they get an outbreak of Delta in the second half of 2021, proceed to lock down very quickly to attempt to get out of lockdown very quickly. The WA/Qld/NT models of locking down almost straight away have resulted in days, not weeks, in lockdown, and I suspect they will rinse and repeat until their populations are sufficiently vaccinated. Victoria I suspect will be similar.

Agreed

The whole country with the various states (collectively) had a big enough sample size for NSW to then act quickly with their outbreak

They go into hard lockdown 2 or 3 days earlier and we might have had a different result right now (in NSW)

They will kicking themselves now as they could be months away from shedding the dreaded disease

By the way, I'm not favouring either side of politics as we here in Victoria had a 20+ week lockdown due to the slapstick way we handled the quarantine hotels.  Looking back now it was pure amateur hour

First jabs = higher likelihood of second jabs = increasing immunity = < vaccine hesitancy

The first shot coverage currently ~25%, but that is not broken down by vaccine type and age group, so I'm guessing the coverage of <40s is low enough so to affect this 56%*

Sure, but at present there is a 12 week gap between shot 1 and 2.

Notwithstanding the fact under 40s are ** RECOMMENDED ** to wait for Pfizer ++

++ Pfizer availability/appointment availability problematic

Here we go again NSW has just announced AZ fine for anyone over 40. I wonder why the vaccination centres are not being rushed.

Honestly we are being lead by idiots on many levels.

Yep, here we go again. People doing the wrong [censored] thing constantly because they are selfish.

I hope like hell he did not walk around crowded inner city Melbourne, but instead made a few stops for fuel/food in remote areas. Somehow I highly doubt it. He probably went to Chadstone, Bunnings, Kmart and the Pies Richmond game ?

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to
