As to your comparison to a wealthy first first world country, you must never underestimate to capacity that Scomo's Merry Men have to lie and bull****e their way into making us a basket case. From the Ruby Princess onwards, right down to the mythology that at the end of March etc etc etc.

Can we keep gratuitous abuse of people out of this thread please.

We have had a whole week without it and the discussion in this thread has been objective, constructive and informative.

Interested to understand why you would post pics of 3rd world countries & compare them to a wealthy first world country like Australia. These type of posts are endemic of the “fear” factor we are currently living in & are not helpful or informative!!

What are you scared of D9?  We are living in the lucky country.

I am merely pointing out how bad it is outside of Oz in some places.  We are super lucky to have the resources/technology and infrastructure we have.

I actually agree to a point and this pic highlights how well we are doing and how, in some cases, certain pollies are going over the top with their alarmist diatribe.

When in fact we are, relatively speaking, in an amazing position without too much to worry about in most (but not all) cases....at least prior to Delta (see below).

We also have access to so much high quality PPE (if we choose to use it ...not including the surgical masks we see being worn so much which provide very little protection vs more effective respirator  alternatives) both personally and in a health aged care worker/ hospital / ambo sense.

Having said that we do need to recognise that the Delta variant is a step up from all other variants and is almost a new version of Covid that requires a different method of curtailing until a large percentage (approx 80%?) of the population are fully vaccinated...

I'd like to thank everyone for the contributions they've made to this thread because in the main it's been very informative (for me anyway) and civil.

My apologies if this has been mentioned but there was an open letter to The Australian from a group of Health Professions regarding the merits of AZ v Pfizer.

https://www.theaustralian.com.au/science/only-real-options-are-vaccination-or-risk-death-by-delta/news-story/8ade3ec715c5fdd88694534c2d251ecc

It's probably behind a paywall but there is a table in it saying that against the Delta variant both vaccines are equally effective once both doses are administered.  Any comments or counter views?

FTR I'm due my second AZ dose in a couple of weeks time.  Given Superunknown's comment above regarding the reaction of his wife to the second Pfizer dose AZ seems a good option to me.  In addition AZ is a "traditional" vaccine where we have more experience with outcomes.  Pfizer being mRNA is new.  Who knows what the longer term experiences will be.  Or am I jumping at shadows?

Professor Crotty's explanation of mRNA technology in this Q&A might be helpful BB.

He is one of the RNA industry 'go toos' and was referred to me by a scientist working for Peter Mac at the time.  Posting some interesting updates /info on Twitter also...

I think you have failed to read all of mine D9.

Governments have been using the fear mechanism on the masses for many decades now.  Covid could be a major issue here if we were a 3rd world country but we aren't.  That doesn't mean we can't empathise and maybe even assist our fellow man.  Some of whom live under worse conditions than ourselves, whether it be Covid or other reasons such as hunger, poverty, political persecution etc.

Anyway we can at least agree on one thing...we are both bemused by each other's posts ...at least to date! 😄

Back to the footy...on a good note...the Cats just lost!

I'm a bit worried about your risk assessment thought processes. You willingly stand outside the Casey ground to watch training (for which we are grateful) even though you know there are snakes in the vicinity.

The number of deaths in Australia from blood clots caused by AZ is 7 out of 7 million doses given, obviously the classic "one in a million". The number of fatalities in NSW from Covid is 76 out of 8.2 million people. That's more than 9 in a million. Are you sure it's worth taking that risk of remaining unvaccinated when an alternative is available? (I appreciate every person's circumstances and individual health profile can vary.)

Oh, and in Australia there is an average of two fatal snake bites per annum. Just something for you to think about.

Hnmm 🤔 I am currently reassesing. One thing though... you left another risk factor out which I alerted Demonland readers to from my last Casey training report.... Being mauled to death by a Polar Bear!!!😳

Not if you have had blood clots its not, Govt is refusing to budge and ill be buggered if i will sign an indemnity, given my history. Its Phizer or nothing at this stage

What is your history? Have you discussed its relevance to the AZ risk of thrombocytopenia with your doctor? If it’s a history of clotting/DVT, it’s highly unlikely that you’re any more at risk with AZ vaccine, but you’d need to ASK AN EXPERT, AND LISTEN (a behaviour in short supply these days).

Keep in mind deaths per Vax using AZ rate only takes into account those deaths confirmed as AZ related via official autopsy results.

While we have no way of knowing, certain family members / religions / races may not give consent to autopsy following death.

My understanding is that very few Covid autopsies are being carried out so who would know?

Jeez ... just heard today's numbers. 29 - none of them in isolation.

Sorry for any people in hospitality etc but... thank god Andrews went for the snap lockdown.

Yep, it seemed extreme at the time but who knows how many people that may have prevented for interacting with these cases.

Can’t see any world where the GF is in Melbourne now, I personally say make it in Adelaide. Beautiful venue and it’s more central to Australia so in the even people are able to to travel to it they aren’t crossing multiple time zones and forking out huge $$$ to get there.

I also can’t imagine I’ll be able to go to a game now for the rest of the year. I was really hoping to get to at least one match this season but the Delta outbreaks just seem to make it unlikely. But hey who knows, they get on top of this latest outbreak like it looks like QLD have done and there may be some hope.

This site gives all that and more.

It's updated weekly as I recall.

The one thing it doesn't do is give a Pfizer/AZ breakdown for vaccinations administered

My difficulty with political type posts is that they usually present just one side of the story.

There are a variety of reasons why we are where we are:

Low vaccination rates:

  • lack of supply due to fed government stuff ups, EU withholding supply etc,
  • lack of and miscommunication due to Europe's bad PR on AZ, ATAGI vacillating on advice, state CHO's not supporting ATAGI recommendations, language barriers etc
  • lack of demand due to complacency, anxiety, cultural influences, antivaxers

Irresponsible people.  The current east coast wave started when an unvaccinated 60+ man worked in the most high risk job possible:  transporting air crew from airport to accommodation.  Not blaming him - it is his right not to get vaccinated.  But he should not have been in that job.  Like any work Health and Safety policies all stakeholders need to be protected.  Its like if people don't wear a safety harness they don't work on skyscrapers.  The man should have been given another role in a low risk area.

Human error:  People being released from quarantine while positive.

Delta mutation:  Its arrival and age group targets surprised everyone.  It made early vaccination plans to do older folks first somewhat redundant.   Younger folk needs have increased demand.

I could go on but I hope people see the bigger picture.

This might end up being a moot point but I seem to remember receiving an email (or it could have been a letter I guess) that I received sometime last season as a category 1 Tridents member that in recognition of 'donating' my membership payment for 2020 should we play finals in 2021 the first one would be free.

Does anyone else remember receiving something like this because for the life of me I can't find it anywhere.

Well I don't care about football this morning. There has been a case at my GD's school. She has to get tested today and that is consuming my thoughts right now. It is no longer something that happens to other people it is at my door.

Gee Delta is everywhere at the moment

Except in WA and that state is going to reap the rewards next month.

Now I finally understand why the people of Western Australia love Mark McGowan and why he’s segregated his state from the rest of the country.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
