Everyone is in the team to play their role. Melksham’s role is delivery to a player who can kick a goal or kick goals himself. Yes, it would be better if he tackled more ferociously. But that is not his primary role. Drop him for not finding a target or kicking goals? Sure, that makes sense. But dropping Melksham for not tackling well or often enough would be like dropping Frisch for not taking intercept marks. Except take a look at the replay, he had times where he was right beside a player (ie: Cunnington) in our forward line and was soft and didn't make a tackle or an impact. I don't like calling players soft, but in that case it was clear cut to tackle and he didn't. Really disappointed me today. 2 Quote

But while we’re at it, there is a lot of bias on this forum that is not backed up by facts. People don’t like Melksham and actively look for things he does wrong or doesn’t do at all. So, some facts from today’s game: Spargo 10 disposals, 2 tackles and 7 pressure acts. Jones 14 disposals, 2 tackles, 11 pressure acts. Melksham 17 disposals, 3 tackles and 18 pressure acts. Now that everyone has decided they hate Melksham it won’t matter what he does. They will scrutinise every action he does, confirmation bias will mean they see everything not quite up to scratch (but overlook it in his teammates) and conveniently miss his positive contribution. Best just ignore it. 7 Quote

So, some facts from today’s game: Spargo 10 disposals, 2 tackles and 7 pressure acts. Jones 14 disposals, 2 tackles, 11 pressure acts. Melksham 17 disposals, 3 tackles and 18 pressure acts. Tackles and pressure acts are easy when you're second to the ball in the midfield, and it looked like Melksham played a lot of that game in the midfield. Hardwick last week talked about pressure 'post clearance', because any team can get pressure on at a clearance with a dozen players around the ball, it's the pressure you apply when the ball is loose in space that defines your overall pressure. Melksham just doesn't change direction quick enough to put pressure on in space. Maybe it's just lack of physical ability to do so, he's quite a stiff player, but I don't think that's a total excuse. He seems to lack intensity. Then there's the other part of his game which is he just isn't hard enough at the contest. Again he's stiff, he's upright, his head and body is away from the action. These guys get coached day after day on how to win contested ball. There's no excuse for not committing the body over the ball and securing it. Paul Roos turned a rubbish Melbourne side in to at least a competitive scrappy team purely on the basis of getting your head over the ball and picking it up without fumbling. Oh and today's newest rubbish action in his game - not being able to fight through a tackle to handball and instead attempting silly little kicks when under pressure. Net result = turnover. If he is in the midfield more he has to fight through tackles and get the ball free safely. Overall he mixed in some good stuff today, he'll almost certainly keep his spot in the side for at least next week, but he can't be 20% down on intensity week after week and just coast because he can mix in the occasional good kick. If we want to be a finals side we need every player bringing finals like intensity. Quote

Didn’t kick to the advantage of leading forwards on a couple occasions. Laying tackles because you are second to the ball isn’t often recorded as a stat 3 Quote
Bombay Airconditioning 6,508 Posted May 2, 2021 Posted May 2, 2021 Something I’m big on is coming to play every week. Would of loved to see the response a quarter earlier than what it came, but none the less it came. We continue to learn and continue to grow as a side. Whilst we remain unbeaten and in the top 4 we will be hunted more than what we’ve experienced before. Kozi and Jackson are both future stars, they just seem to be in everything. Love watching both of them play. Gutted for Tomlinson, was having a great season, he will be missed. 4 Quote

The only time they showed up was for about 7 or so minutes in the third. Most of them played like they had taken a shot of smack before the game, just running up and down on the spot. Accidently took Indica instead of Sativa before the bounce....mistake realised at half time. ..Sativa FTW! 1 Quote

Had a few nicer kicks dropped and didn't fluff many (or maybe any?). He's constantly half a second slow to react and pressure and he has very little idea on how to contest. I'd like to see him played at half back at Casey to develop his contested game. His run and carry and penetrating kick could be a weapon if he developed the rest of his game. Quote
low flying Robbo 979 Posted May 2, 2021 Posted May 2, 2021 I don’t think we are ever going to smash teams this year. I think we are only going to stick with our opposition on the day and then pull away in Burgo-time. 1 Quote

Just watched the 2nd half replay. This was evident. I thought Jonesey did a bit, so 1st half must have been eerily quiet. Also Spargo and ANB were clearly off I'd posited earlier in the week about being concerned about our ability to keep our run amd intensity - we were flat today. But we have a bit of depth, so hopefully can refresh well 3 Quote
picket fence 18,184 Posted May 2, 2021 Posted May 2, 2021 I thought Chunky Jones was excellent nearly all game. Composed and did some damaging things! Definately plays next week. 1 Quote

Its all to do with each weeks winning margin and its % relationship to the losers (the other teams) score in points. Yes I know. For and Against and as each of those columns are added to, the % will change less (unless there is a massive blowout). Todays result when added to the 2 columns actually lowers our % by a small margin Quote

Agree - I thought that he was more composed than usual today. And he worked really hard to be an outlet on a number of occasions and marked well. melksham appears to be the new spargo or ANB on this site, but his want to submit to the tackle and try a kick on the way down created a lot turnovers for us. Just focus on getting a handball please! ANB had a bad day, second guessing himself with decision making. Enough credits in the bank so far this season - but also needs to take the first option. god I love our new guys. Jackson, Kozi and even JJ were a big reason we turned it around. No mental scaring - unlike all of us, and I’d think a few of their teammates, 1 Quote

I must have be on my own and watched a different game. I thought it was as poor as a performance as you'll see. I'm honestly also yet to see this supposed run and carry that he's suppose to bring bring the table. All I see is dinky little 20m chip and no follow up to get the handball receive. Do be honest he's no different to say Brayshaw in terms of style of play when playing on the wing. Difference is, Brayshaw is a better footballer. If we are fair dinkum as a footy side then Baker simply does not play in this football club until he gets the basics right. Right now I have about 5 other blokes I'd rather be playing then Baker. 9 Quote
Ted Lasso 19,586 Posted May 2, 2021 Posted May 2, 2021 i think this is one of our more significant wins in recent memory, mostly because it's a classic MFC game to drop. North were all over us, but one things we've done really well this year is not panic, and we finish games so strongly we can run over teams like this. Ben Brown looked a little bit rusty i thought, but he will get better, would have to think if Tmac is going to stay back now, that Weid comes and teams up with Brown and Jackson up forward 3 Quote
dazzledavey36 56,334 Posted May 2, 2021 Posted May 2, 2021 That was a very disappointing game from ANB. It's almost like he reverted back to his old way. He's got credits in the bank for now, but if he puts in another performance like that then he could be in trouble, especially with Chandler and Bedford breathing down his neck. Must step up next week 4 Quote

Right now I have about 5 other blokes I'd rather be playing then Baker. He certainly popped a few up today and whilst they were worrying they did land safely! He can flatten them out too - mostly on going for goal. He's certainly not a great kick but he does have upside there. He got on the burst a few times, didn't exactly break it open but there were times - used and unused - where he was running. He certainly has acceleration that Gus doesn't. But yeah, his kicking was better than anything else he did only because it was ok not bad. Otherwise I totally agree that he was poor and isn't high on my list, I was shocked he was picked. But short on Rosman going from fringe VFL player to AFL player in the next 10 weeks there's really no one else who can bring pace on the wing. Maybe that's ok. We've got Langdon. We've got Hunt at half back. We just live with some combination of Gus and maybe mix in some Harmes, Sparrow, JJ etc. Marlion Pickett and Liam Baker both created big openings against us. I can see why the coaches were thinking let's use this chance to have a look at Baker now, then we can try it again later on. Quote

All progress with taking the easy option, not fumbling and making clear decisions was lost. It was the 2nd worst thing I saw all game, just behind Petracca waddling off the mark and getting called to play on repeatedly. 1 Quote
