Emotion aside, if you're Trac why sign now?  He's not out of contract till the end of next year.  Unless he gets injured, his value is going to continue to rise and until we make finals and win finals, we (and he) doesn't know if our current form is a flash in the pan or if we have really turned the corner.

Agreed although he has to weigh up what he wants out of footy - stick with this group who has real belief and are all signing on to achieve something? Or take the cash and get $1.5m a year to play at North?

Do you think he can get any better? Maybe marginally. For me, it is more about doing what he is doing week in/week out - which strictly speaking makes him better by being reliably consistent - and maybe kicking some bags. So you factor this in to the offer now, as well as a Brownlow and Norm Smith value capture, just in case. Knock out offer now.

True but also for him he may want to see good form from the team for more than 6 weeks.  When Simon Goodwin had his contract extended at the start of 2019, many "experts" had us as their favourite for the flag, champion data said we had the best list etc etc and then we had a terrible season and missed the finals the following season.

If we're cautious as supporters, I wouldn't blame Petracca if he wanted to see a bit more for committing to the club long term when his contract doesn't expire for another 18 months.

Tracc's been quoted previously as saying he wants to be the best player in the comp and win flags. He won't be going to North.

If a big team contender offered him a lot of money, it might sway him. But not sure Collingwood is that right now.

Exactly but then that "big team contender" would actually need to have the salary cap space.

You would have to be a muppet to go to the pies.  Coach on death row, deep cultural issues, board changes likely to be ongoing, no cap room, poor drafting and trading, probably heading for a serious rebuild.

Perhaps waiting until now to table an offer was a good move after all as he’d arguably be leaving the best side in the comp if he did move on and what we offer in $$ becomes less of an issue.

I hope there are a lot of KPI driven milestones in his contract.

Love Tracc and what he brings but do you guys agree that backing up the truck with a long contract could be harmful to us long-term?

Happy to table 5 years with heavy cash + KPI

Will be a touch concerned if it's 7+ years like Grundy

Great point.

All this talk about money mid season puts a dampener on everything.Petracca is not a Premiership player.Get BOG in Grand Final then start negotiating a new contract for 2023+.  How can Melbourne afford 5 million  for one player. Who misses out? We havent won a flag yet.

It was a very specific post (tabled “this afternoon”) and so I was curious as to how the poster came across the info... did I ask him to name names?

Sure, you can ask but don't expect an answer

I come to this site to hear intel like this. Sure a lot of it is off track but I like to know whats out there, not too fussed where it comes from. You learn which posters are generally on the money

Are you from an alternate Universe?

I think we can all see what the Tracc is capable of, with the help of his mates.
may it continue long into the future.
Sign him up

If correct, this has a Dusty type deal written all over it:  7 years with very significant dollars.

Dusty signed during the finals of 2017, before he won 3 premiership and 3 Norm Smith medals.  Not suggesting the Dees or Petracca will achieve the same but he could be that player if we make the GF's.

Dusty's manager shopped him around to extract every last dollar from Richmond.  Going on media reports Grundy played hard ball and extracted a 7 year rather than 4- years the pies wanted.Have no reason for thinking this but I don't see Petracca or his manager as those types.   I'm confident a fair and fanfare less deal will be struck

I would be ok with 7 years on whatever the club decides/agrees with Christian.  They won't compromise the list or the sal cap for one player, no matter how good he is.

I just hope we aren't doing much 'back-ending' of contracts to keep everyone.

I'm afraid DFA, your last two posts have been too negative for me contemplate.

A bit of lateral thinking here could resolve many of our inner fears.

Yeah, I don't think we should pay any of our players until we've won a premiership.

Christian wants the big stage, and that means the MCG and regular finals.

He will be paid well anywhere, but, leaving purely for money doesn't strike me as his motivation. Christian seems to have matured quite a lot, and is very team driven whilst expecting a lot from himself.

He feeds off his mates and looks to have very strong friendships with many of the boys. He'd never go interstate (his nonna would kill him), and no other MCG tenant look set for sustained success. Richmond will likely plateau and then slide, Hawthorn are a while off while Collingwood seems to be headed for an unpleasant few years. What a [censored] shame.

He is in his prime and we seem to have turned a corner. Our list is so balanced across each line and demographically. Clearly I have no idea to the contract specifics. However, as an approx  top 5-10 player in the competition, he's going to be rewarded very handsomely.

Being one of the driving forces in bringing success to the Dees with some of your best mates must appeal. Silver service out of the ruck must appeal. Having a A grade well balanced list of contributors will allow him to achieve his best, and that must appeal.

Hope it's not 7 as I'm wary of complacency.... Gotta keep competitive types on their toes a bit. Eg Grundy.

But yeah, he's not going anywhere and he's a gun, so give him good money and a fair amount of time and continue to build around the rock.

I doubt it would matter to a player like Trac. He's in it for the success as much or even moreso than the money. He wants to be a Hall of Famer, thats what drives him.

We keep hearing our players linked to other clubs sniffing around and then they get signed.
I'll tip Trac will be the same.
He's often stated that he loves the club and wants to be a one club player.
He might command some decent coin but deserves it.
Wants to be recognised as a great of the game and I very much doubt he'll get complacent.

Absolutely nailed it. Agree wholeheartedly

Be handy if he signs before winning a Brownlow EOY.

whenever he signs you think there will be a brownlow clause so it makes no difference or if anything costs us more if he wins this year

I’d offer a 5 year deal. That’s a win win for the club and for Trac.  Any longer is stretching the relationship imo.

What?

My thoughts exactly. That is why I take no notice of such posts as I regard them as BS
