That's nothing.

Viney trained with the hawks before he was drafted too. Also told to cool it because the players were super worried they would get hurt

The difference is Jack was 11.

Loved seeing the start of footy classified where they spoke about the long term contracts after looking at the Petracca.

Eddie talking like he knows how to manage these things by talking about Pendlebury never getting a long term deal but him staying at the club for 12 years.  Then also went on to say how the long term deals can change the player - they feel the pressure or lose the drive to perform.

Coming from the guy who was the president of the club that had to have a firesale at the end of last year.

I'm not generally in favour of long term deals like this so I think the criticism is fair... but coming from Ed is laughable

Eddie really said that? Did anyone bring up Grundy when he said this?

Yeah Lloyd brought it up.  Was interesting to note their coverage of the Fritsch incident as well compared to On the couch.  All saying Fritsch should have got a week and no comparison with the Dangerfield GF incident.

I actually think Fritsch should have got a week (and Dangerfield as well) - but have noticed that having the likes of Lyon and Healy on fox footy and the radio does a lot to ensure the Melbourne view is presented in the media.  I think this is pretty valuable.

Yeah, Eddie said one of the dangers was the pressure, big money to perform in all industries can get to you and you can fall on your head, which lead to Lloydy bringing up Grundy lol.

Eddie didn’t sound like he was against Trac getting a long term deal though, as much as it was killing him inside that he’ll never go to Collingwood.

Probably a reason Jordan came to the Demons.
Tracc is a modern day RDB

4-5 Flags are a possibility if we can keep the Football Department on track

#the footy media is crap as it is a big boy's club full of bonehead ex players and hopelessly conflicted peanuts like eddie, player managers, board members, club employees etc etc

Does my head in.

Example 97, 562:

This morning on RSN old mate Brad Johnson was on. Of course he was asked about Tracc's seven year deal.

In between joking with another ex football bonehead (and current AFLW coach) Daniel Hartford about how brilliant it would have been to be offered a 7 year deal and how quickly they would have accepted it, he opines that 7 years is too long and 4 years is the 'sweet spot' for top shelf stars like Tracc.

Fine.

But here's the kicker. That answer came after his response to the first question he was asked.

The question (paraphrased) was: would he be happy for the dogs to offer Bontempelli (whose contract ends this year) a 7 year deal?

The answer (paraphrased) was: chortle, chortle, [censored] yeah! Lock him in for as long as possible. Sign him up for life!

So the dees (and other clubs) should offer a generational player a four year deal. But Johnson would be thrilled for the the dogs to offer their best player a seven year deal.

And is this ridiculous contradiction pointed out to him? Of course not.

I've been thinking about this a bit lately. It's Petracca or Lever for mine. The more dominant and team orientated Petracca has become, the more he's come into captain calculations for me.

Lewis also floated it on 360 last night.

I think its between Trac and Lever too, both just ooze leadership

Lever for mine. He’s been a leader from the beginning of his career. He’s also general out there on field, almost like an onfield coach. It’s a key reason why we brought him across from the Crows.

Trac has definitely matured well the last few years, but I don’t see him as an organizer and coach out there. Best for him to lead by example, but not necessarily be captain.

I’m with you on this. Viney is an inspirational player but was not a great captain and i’ve got a sense CP5 is in the same mould,  fr different reasons. reckon he’s maybe 5 years away from a position like that... if ever. He seems like he’s everybody's mate and that’s great to have around a club as he’s probably a type of glue between players. But i don’t see him as a captain... no disrespect to him saying that as nor is dusty either.

Got to let players be who they naturally are I reckon and let them do what they do best.  i think captaincy is far better suited to someone like Lever.

I just listened to Tracc’s interview again he is quite inspirational I love the way he mentioned so many of the kids on the list and said how he is looking forward to playing with them in the future. You just know that you can trust him on and off the field, he and Rick might be the next leadership team when Max & Jack are ready to step aside.
This kid and the current crop of players has helped re-kindle my emotions towards the Mighty Demons again. Thank you Christian Petracca for helping us love the game again.

Yes, Viney is inspirational.  Max took over the captaincy because he was he could be everybody's mate, with a serious side and a light side.  And Max presented very well for sponsors and the club in the media.  I would have thought that someone with the best quality of Viney and the best of Gawn would be an ideal captain.

Petracca has all their qualities covered, plus he can and has won games off his own boot.

The ideal might be Petracca (c).  Lever (vc).

Anyway it is a bit academic as I expect Max and Jack to keep their roles for a few years yet.  We may add another vc at some stage but that is about it as I see it.

Ned guy stepping down as Collingwoods list manager after the mid season draft.

Probably well off the mark with this but I like to think it went something like this.

- Petracca tells a mate he had passing thoughts of what it would be like to pull on the pies jumper, the club he supported as a kid.

- pies catch wind of this and make contact with petraccas management.

- management neither confirms or denies and probably encourages the pies with their enquiries to help negotiations along with Melbourne.

- pies think they have a chance, but have a bulging salary cap and decide a 28yr old hamstring prone treloar on huge money needs to go.

- proceed to sell the farm with Stephens and Phillips jettisoned to free up space for their main target with views of having enough cap space at end of 22 to blow our offer away for a then restricted free agent Petracca.

- Guy unconvincingly fronts the radio saying it wasn't about salary cap, they wanted to get back into the draft. Later comments were made about unspecified players wanting to join them as well which they couldn't accommodate with their previous list make up.

- Pies mocked by all and sundry for the bs they were publicly sprouting.

- Fast forward to Petracca signing 7 year contract extension, multiple articles highlighting collingwoods strong interest in him.

- 2 days later Ned Guy "steps down"

Now if North can relegate the pies to the bottom of the ladder in the second half of the year that would complete Collingwood shooting themselves in the foot with their round 1 pick already traded out for this year.

Brilliant news! Trac is a star and will still get even better as our team improves.

There’s real loyalty at our club and it’s started at the top, Jonesy and Gawny have led the way, Viney, Salem and Trac have followed. It’s great for club stability now and our future, something great is building!!!!

Tmac pretty loyal also when all things considered.

I think it is too early to call the next Captain, mainly because I see several options, Lever, May though probably too old, (I was a big fan of Tmac as Captain for a while too), even Jordan down the road shows signs. Trac is the amazing player, we all acclaim but I am not sure he is Captain material yet, need to know that the lair he was, has passed. I think Viney is awesome but I don't feel he quite had the right touch as Captain much better as VC.

If the sky fell in and no Max/Jack, my call would be May C, both Lever and Tmac as VC.

Lever’s captaining this club after Gawn.

There’s no surer bet that when Bontempelli signs an 8 year contract extension in July, the media will get around the Dogs and praise them for such a bold signing.

he'll sign a 6 i reckon, as it'll be better 'brand management' after all the talk about trac's 7-year (which is really 8-year) deal

The one thing that will serve Trac well, if made captain, is his absolute determination to be the best and be successful. He might be everyone's mate, but if he can harness that ambition to drive standards among the group, he'd be alright.

Everyone thought Max was too chummy too.

Kate Roffey also spoke about Trac in her ABC sports segment. She was speaking to a first year player who'd just injured himself long term and suggested he go and speak to Trac. The reply was something like 'Oh, yeah, he's already been to see me'. Trac just seems to have a real love for his teammates.
