Weideman played a chunk of good footy last year despite the obvious difficulties. He’s 6-8 weeks away from finding form after an injury. One bad half is hardly reason to start bagging him out. Chill folks if he and Brown can get up and about we’ll go deep

It was my first thought when I saw the guy but didn't ask "are you picket fence" as figured that'd be a very weird question to receive if it wasnt you ?

It is the order in which you rank the players that is important, in selection terms.

For example, I would have Weideman number 8, TMac number 7, Melksham number 6, Jackson number 5 (utility in the main), Mitch Brown number 4, Majak Daw number 3, Fritta number 2 , Ben Brown number 1.

You start somewhere else, it's your right, loges, not your cynicism cue.

Then you pick the 'fillers' and 'smalls' to match the dynamics of your preferences and omissions.

Just because we do not agree on these positions, it does not make your decisions or mine incorrect. The decisions are just different for varied reasons. Goodwin had a go with his team and at this point, I am not all that happy about the longitudinal, evidentiary outcomes.

No, I dont write notes but prefer to cruise around the ground, taking in different angles and scenes. I commit to memory, Notes??? No way!

That is the major concern for Weid, he can’t read the flight of the ball. I’ve been a big Weid backer but he really needs to improve this area.

Have you watched Weid play? I really think he is a bust and the team should move on without him

I have travelled the bumpy road many times in the pursuit of enlightenment about the Weed and his long-awaited improvements and missing competencies. Even with weaker opponents and backlines he has notoriously failed my expectations as reflected in so many commentaries from fans, members and footy purists alike and these, one and all, have been over a timeframe that is now beyond 'intolerable'.  The team should move on without him - he has had his chances - he has failed to deliver that glimmer of hope we seek. Looking at our structure as a team and its newly annointed ones, there is no place for the hype supporting failure.

I've given him six years, as well. What a waste.

Weideman is one of those players that was always going to need time. He is a pack marker, but has a slight build, so he is going to need to develop into his frame - in order to get the most out of himself. Ben Brown is a different type of player, more of a lead up forward. I think Weideman will compliment Brown nicely, but ultimately, Weideman is still at least a year away from hitting his straps. I rated him as a junior, just wouldn't have taken him because anyone with half a clue knew he'd need many years to develop.

I still see him as a tantalizing prospect with his goal kicking ability combined with his aerobic capacity.  He has played well in all the practice matches so far.

I thought he was ok without dominating.  

I understand the scepticism but I think the Weid can be a very capable second forward. He’s looked very good in spells but when in poor nick offers very little. Hoping he can find his way back to form because I believe our flag winning team will have BB and the Weid as spearheads.

We won't, bar 2 games further down the track to allow him (Jacko) to freshen up. Oh and I think the term is "back up" not spare.

Ventured down to Casey along with a few others on here to observe a few players.

Weather was pretty rainy when I got there for 1st quarter.

Not too many spectators, I estimate around 400 max. Among them were Mark and Nicole Bradtke (Mark is huge), Choco Williams, Alan Richardson, Sean Smith.

First observation I noticed was Ben Brown is BIG. Not overly solid, just very tall, towers above Majak and Weed. He had his left knee strapped. This bloke knows how and where to lead, he presents himself well and is a target. Nice mark and goal in first quarter, then a juggling one handed mark again, followed by an unlucky roving snap that hit the post.

I asked Alan Richardson on the way in from quarter time huddle how the boys were looking for tomorrow, he said we're travelling well and will be a good test. I asked about Ben Brown and he said he'll be a great pick up for the club.

Ben presented well again in the 2nd quarter, without adding to the scoreboard which was dominated by Williamstown. He then went in at half time with the team, came out to run a few laps, then ventured inside to pull up stumps.

I managed to ask Ben how the knee was, he said it felt really good, and that he had fun out there. On this, once in the tracksuit, Ben went to the bench to sit with the team for the rest of the game, and was very vocal and supportive at the 3/4 time huddle with the forwards group. Love guys with input and support for your fellow teammates, reckon he will be a beauty.

Other notes I observed:-

Petty - Played down back, didn't notice anything amazing, did his job, yet didn't see any mistakes either. Played first half only.

Joel Smith - Similar to Petty, did his job, looks comfortable down back.

Fraser Rosman - Personally I think a project player, was quiet in my eyes. One instance in the second quarter was going in for a contest against opposition, think he should've gone harder, outcome was Williamstown player wanted the ball and got it. I like players with mongrel. Don't expect big things early, a lot to learn.

Bowey - Was down back most of day, picking up a player. When using the ball by foot, majority of the time hit his target, looks like a footballer who knows what he is doing and what decision to make. I like him. Is small though, reminded me of Caleb Daniel hoping he can be as good.

Laurie - Kicked a nice roving goal in the first quarter, as others said, second quarter unseen, then bits a bobs thereafter. Is a bit bigger than Bowey, and legs more solid.

Daw - Built like a brick ****house, played mainly ruck, did pretty well, don't think he is a natural footballer, but presented well and took some nice marks around the ground. At times I thought he was plodding along and needed match fitness, but if you need a solid body I'd pick him as a good backup.

Mitch Brown - Was up forward in tandem with BBB and Weed. Mainly playing CHF in first half. I like how he plays, leads well to the correct spots, took a few nice marks. He is more athletic than big, but think he is better than people give him credit for. Similar build to Petty.

Weed - As other said, struggled. Was flying for marks, couldn't get onto anything, leads were not coming off. I'm hoping if he does get back in with BBB that he gets the 2nd best defender and the pressure will be a bit less for him. Comparing him and Ben Brown was like chalk and cheese. Has nice big legs now, just want him to have a bit more mongrel and aggression to take the big grabs.

Bradtke - Not a natural footballer, yes obviously tall, worked in tandem with Daw in ruck. For me this is his last year, looks a bit lost out there. Number 11 from the opposition was too big and solid for Austin.

Hibberd - Felt like I was watching an AFL game, got his possessions and with his lovely left foot used it pretty well. For me one of the best out there.

Baker - Some players just know where to go to get the football, others don't. I feel Oscar is a solid VFL player, hoping he can prove us all wrong, but didn't do anything substantial in my eyes.

VandenBerg - He is a solid unit and looks very comfortable out there, did some good things and quite vocal with the group.

Overall think we got through unscathed, big positives for me were Ben Brown and Jake Bowey.

I’m on the fence about Weed but too much is being made of his performance today. It was his first game after a significant injury on a wet, windy day at Casey - hardly the right conditions for tall forwards.

Asides from his substantial footballing ability, everything I've seen and heard about BBB suggests that he's a rippa bloke to have around a footy club.

Really makes me think that North made a big mistake offloading him the way they did and if they have made similar mistakes to the MFC era 2011 loosing too much experience and leadership within a young, struggling team.

He has received more compensatory tolerance than most across six years. The well-clued, just-clued, half-clued, no-clued and Collingwood supporters alike all realise those six years were more than adequate to elicit appropriate improvements so mysteriously seen in him for such a longer term by observers. Even One-legged-Larry could show more improvement over that timeframe than has our eternal hope for the Weed. 

The thing with Weid is it's always" he's just coming back from injury, give him more time, He needs to get the no. 2 defender.". Well I don't know what calibre of defender people think he copped yesterday. VFL standard I would expect.

Ill get flack for sure but Id love to see Vanders back in full swing and in the majors again.

As for b.brown, norf dropped the ball here.

Will be the Coleman winner that we have been missing.

Not sure how this pans out for Weid. I guess hes suited at half fwd anyway. If he can improve on the form he showed during our finals campaign some time ago then all will be well.

Even about yesterday.

The ridiculous over the top reaction to Weideman’s first game back from injury is so unnecessary. It’s one quiet game after a layoff in bog ordinary conditions where delivery to the forward line was poor. He was a 2-goal-per-game forward last year until right near the end of the season. This six year wait nonsense seems to completely overlook his most recent body of work.

And the irony of the same posters banging in about Weideman also suggesting Majak might be the second coming of Wayne Carey is so hilarious.

I’d rather Weid out on the G than Majak any day. Give him a couple of weeks to settle back in.
