Gator 18,053 Posted April 7, 2021 Posted April 7, 2021 Why people want Baker or Lockhart near this side is unfathomable to me. 4
Damo 3,465 Posted April 7, 2021 Posted April 7, 2021 Jetta has played well against the Cats previously.
FritschyBusiness 1,478 Posted April 7, 2021 Posted April 7, 2021 not sure whats going on with all the Jetta hate, he did not lose a contest against Freo, lost 1 against the saints and then had that absolute pest kick a few on him which he would have done on anyone 6
Fat Tony 5,337 Posted April 7, 2021 Posted April 7, 2021 Hibberd is ahead of Rivers, Jetta and Hunt IMO. While we are going ok, he needs to come in and it should be for Jetta. The fact that May had to play on Greene indicates that we have not solved the small lockdown defender role. Melksham should come in for Jones or Sparrow, who should remain in the 23. 2

I dont want Baker in the side but I dont want a kid to debut as sub (with no game involvment) I also dont want to waste a week of no game time into someone who might add more or be needed soon ie: Melksham or Hibberd. I want someone who offers some medium size flexibility if called upon. 1

If he does not have the right match up for a game at the G then being he does not add attack or rebound from defence I am unsure how he assists.

As for Milkman, he's probably a better option that Sparrow in terms of skill and hitting the scoreboard. But if he can't lay a tackle and put pressure on then he'll be dropped in a heartbeat.

Jetta's lack of pace scares me to end on the G and with Miers, Dahlhaus, Fogarty and perhaps one other small nippy forward, Hibberd is better suited. I think his drive and penetration with his kicking is necessary this weekend and I don't the Nev's form is amazing atm. could easily run with dahl who is horribly out of form and has never been the quickest assuming he stays in the side and fog plays for carlton so u wont have to worry about him ripping jets to shreds 7 hours ago, DubDee said: That's a significant list given their lack of depth Evans is a kid plucked from obscurity, playing for Brunswick amateurs apparently he also kicked 2 goals last week against last years preliminary finalists but that doesn't suit the agenda

Hibberd can play tall and small, and probably has more legs in him. I agree that Jetta’s first two rounds were good so I’d hesitate to drop him, but he was found out against Greene and made some very poor decisions along the way. Why he chose to scoop the ball back for Greene’s first goal baffles me with his experience, clearly could’ve rushed the behind. If the club stays healthy (big if knock on wood) I’m starting to wonder if we take more of a squad mentality along the lines of football teams in Europe. Perhaps we rotate some of the players in and out to keep them and the team fresh, don’t do more than say one or two changes per week but give others a crack, while potentially giving some older players rests/lighter loads. 2

Jaded No More 68,976 Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 Jetta and Hibberd are not competing for the same spot. Hibberd is competing for a spot with Rivers and Hunt. Hibberd is not a primarily small shut down defender like Jetta, in fact, he is anything but. His strength is his run and carry off half back. Jetta has never, nor will ever be a zippy player. He wins contests on pure strength and courage. That has not changed. Jetta, if he is to be replaced, needs to be replaced with a small lock-down defender. If there is someone on our list that anyone here thinks will do a better job than Jetta currently, I am open to suggestions. 9

Doesn't need to be that dashing run and carry player anymore. When the ball hits the deck Jetta is in a world of pain and looks awful. When it's a 1-1 in the air Jetta usually does pretty well, Hibbs is also decent in 1-1 in the air. Hibbs is better once the ball hits the deck, more agile, longer kick and can intercept when he needs to. All in all I would much rather Hibbs in the side than Jetts. 2

Last season and the one before he looked vulnerable because he needed to do more for a crepe team. He fits in just fine at present
Mr Steve 3,820 Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 Right at the moment no changes. Reward the winners. Going to have to make some tough decisions in a few week anyway.

And having him as lock down defender means that he can't play to his strengths - which is run and carry. Hunt and Rivers both ahead of him ATM IMHO 5

Yes he can be a lock down defender, but he isn't as good in that role as Jetta. His strengths are currently being well covered by other players. Perhaps Hibbo will play better than Rivers, but Rivers is the future, and I am happy they are putting game time into him. If Hunt's form drops even a little, he will be the first out to allow for Hibbo to come in. On a sidenote, Melksham's form last year was trash. He was gifted games he did not deserve due to injury, but this year he isn't and should not be an automatic selection. The only player currently not in the team who is an automatic selection when fit, is Ben Brown. While the side is playing well, we should maintain a relatively unchanged side. It is proven that having minimal changes to your team throughout the season often coincides with success. 1
Roost it far 10,125 Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 (edited) I’m leaving Jetta in, one poor game is hardly a disaster. I’d take him over Lockhart any day. Let’s wait till they’re banging the door down. Hibberd needs some game time as does Melksham. The first change will be getting Brown or Weideman into the team, possibly for the Richmond game if one of them can have 2 good weeks. Edited April 8, 2021 by Roost it far
Gator 18,053 Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 Melksham is no longer popular around here, but it's a new year and for me he makes us better if he's perfoming. I'd like to see how he goes and I can live without Sparrow's 4 disposals. 1

The competition for Jetta’s spot is Lockhart and he’d be a couple of weeks off being able to apply any real selection pressure. That’s not to say that Hibberd is incapable of playing Jett’s position, but I’d say it’d be a role that we haven’t seen him play before. 1

If there is someone on our list that anyone here thinks will do a better job than Jetta currently, I am open to suggestions. Getting at the contest is equally important so that the opponent can be '...shut down...' . This is where Jetta has lost a little at his career sunset. The actual nullifying process on an opponent is similar, each time, each opponent and thus, it can be expected that it is a widespread skill of most AFL-level footballers on a largely weight-for-weight basis rather than against an absolute giant. Hibberd can still be at the action with an opponent, is still lean and mean, is still mobile and defensive, is still able to run off an opponent creating space and metreage for the team, and his disposal is usually deep, penetrating and accurate, as well as reliable (on most occasions). Thus, Hibberd would be my preferred replacement for Jetta against the Cats. At the same time, I remain in awe of the quality and quantity of excellent work that Jetta has contributed to the MFC and will always hold him in the highest esteem for such consistent performances. To my eye, Jetta has been another Brett Bailey down back.
