Won that purely on talent rather than workrate.

Clearances/stoppages and defensive running by mids still a massive issue.

Lot to like about our next generation though, thought Jordon was great, Sparrow cracked in hard all day, Kozzy was a sparkplug, and Rivers and Jackson showed snippets.

Lever sensational, as was his partner May. Great to see TMac find a patch of form too.

ANB and Spargs leading the way for inside 50 delivery, but need their team mates to take notice.

A front-running win.

Defensive running has been an issue for about 4 years from our midfield. Harmes Clayton and Gus refuse to man up

One of the worst wins I’ve seen by the Demons. But a win is a win, and we can only improve........can’t we?

God awful.

All our smalls/mids are fumbly panic merchants.
Worst goal kicking I’ve maybe ever seen, and with a makeshift forward line that’ll cost us against any other team.
Rivers is a turnover king, besides his rising star game I just don’t see it.
Stumbled home against an injury ravaged bottom 4 team on the road, shocking.

Positives:

May

Lever

Jordon

Tomald

Final siren.

100% record so far this season.

I suspect the wind was a problem with the ball drop/ set shots.

Need to review midfield set up to compete with Saints next week.

Cobwebs blown out for most players.

A lot to like with some players showing something

21000 attendance shows the pessimism of the fanbase. Despite the win today I'm not feeling much more optimistic. We are having the same clearance issues that we've had for two years, and a good team would have punished us today. Zone defence is looking very good though, and I thought our entries inside 50 were improved, even without our preferred key forwards.

blew out the cobwebs and got the win. Good to sign the song at the end

Good effort mostly. Ran out off puff at the start of the 4th but kept going.

All in all I'll take a win any day

plus top of the ladder. Don't know if I was alive last time that happened.

An ordinary game to forget.

Get the 4 points and we move on.

I saw absolutely nothing to convince that we've improve from last year's output.

Well, the football gods have given us the 4 points. Thank you, football gods. I can now enjoy the rest of the weekend. But by all the other gods, you sure do have a sense of humour.

Apart from a few guys actually playing football, we looked slow, unskilled, struggled to find the pill, didn't know what to do with it when we did. Teams that are losing often look like that. But we were in front the whole time!

Where is the improvement? They've had 5 months of planning & practice. It's like the 2019 or 2020 seasons are still going.

Some of the skill errors under no pressure were unforgivable. Especially kicking straight to opposition. And set shots? Jayzus.

Freo didn't look much better, but at least appeared to have some idea of what they were trying to do. God help us when we come up against a team with both talent and a plan.

Quite a few invisible players, and some who might wish they were.

Our vaunted midfield seems to have gone backwards.

Tommy, Jordan, Spargo, Kossie, May & Lever: thank you for saving our bacon.

Didn't see much "anger" out there. They weren't just saying what they think we want to hear, were they?

Well done to the boys, they got the job done in the end. Regardless of anything else, a Round 1 win at the MCG was important.

Do we even do goal kicking practice? Looked like an afterthought from some...

Jackson 5 hrs goal practice.

Well Ill be eating humble pie for dinner.

Sorry Tom.mcd.

A good weekend for the McDonald family. Slimmed down T Mac is the best T Mac.

I’ve regularly potted him on here but he made a real difference today.

I'd hate to see this place if we lost!

May and Lever were fantastic. Mid field need better connection. Tommy Mac was back to clunking marks

Max dominated the hit outs but we lost the clearance - old story but we can improve

I'm not saying it was perfect but its a win and somewhere to start from

Think we got Freo at a good time. Still I’ll take the win

Think they got us at a good time. Any other team would’ve beat them by 100.

Yes, far from pretty with way too many skill errors but first game of the year.

May and Lever were sublime. Actually Tomilison wasnt too bad.

A few too many passengers....Jones smiling after an easy dropped mark was annoying and strange Hunt is put in defence but its four points. Opliver too fancy at times but strong. Trac on song to be a champion. Welcome Jordan. Jackson showed promise in the last and Kozzie will be an excitement machine.

You guys are a [censored] miserable bunch. I'll take the 4 points any day of the week doesn't matter how we get them.

Take the win but wow, it was an injury smashed Freo...

Freo are not awful. It’s going to be a tight season

Half way through the 3rd Quarter I thought we were going to get run down.

We didn’t

Must not have followed very long if that's case...

First win in round 1 in 4 yrs. About time.

Outstanding  Lever and May

Special mention Picket, Truck and TMac

Skill execution, kicking for goal and mid to forward connections still need a lot of work.

You start to wonder if the midfield will ever learn their lesson in regards to clearances and getting sucked into the play.  You've got to assume nobody is teaching them any different, that was a pathetic day at the office in terms of clearance play.

Few of the maligned senior players played well today. T. Mac, ANB, Jetta, Jonesy. Sparrow, Jordon, Jackson and Rivers did enough to warranty a start. Lever and May BOG by far.

The aim is to win a flag. On that evidence we are a gazillion miles away from it. So yeah, that’s disappointing.

It’s cool that you’re entirely satisfied with 4 points at home against a half strength Dockers. Others look at the bigger picture.

Our set shots at goal are awful must be about a 5% conversion rate today. Not just near missus either most were not even close

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
