Without wanting to speculate too much, pretty sure he had a bit going on, on the home front around that time...could explain a few things.

Granted.

Just watched and I can get the sentiments around Goodwin's reactions. Even Tim Lamb having to give him a shoulder rub at the end?

Genuinely probably wanted more inside mids. Not sure which type of player he was looking for instead of classy, good ball users?

Good luck mate, been through it myself. Surround yourself around some good positive people. Will at least ease the burden.

Watched it a few times now. I can't get a read if we were taking Holmes or not. If we were, we weren't overly concerned and were happy to take the two we got.

Not sure where everyone is getting the Goodwin conspiracy from. He looked fine to me.

Sent you a sad face but not in a nasty way, you've copped me in the past when not at my emotional best so I really empathise.

Echo that. Take care McQueen.

You hope the whole thing is staged.

The strategy of taking the best 2 kicks, that's nonsense. If that's how it falls then great, but you take the best 2 players.

A panicked meeting about the 3rd selection when you've had months to get an order finalised and run scenarios based on the earlier picks. Come on now.

Goody hasn't been as involved with the draft (every year but no doubt more so this year) and so isn't as enthusiastic to play up for the camera. That's what I hope that is.

My takeaways were Tim Lamb loves Laurie, and his highlight package is pure class so it's hard not to see the appeal there. Lots of clubs wanted him in the draft so hopefully that's a good sign.

There might be some reluctance on just where and what they do with Bowey. His kicking and vision is supreme but I expect he'll take time to settle in to a role. Half back is a sensible starting point because you want him getting 10+ kicks a game but it might just take a while.

Taylor's enthusiasm for Rosman was a big positive. There's some chance that we've overrated him due to a potential needs fit but it sounds like they weren't just drafting him because they need a wingman. If JT says a guy could explode they've clearly envisioning some big upside. Let's hope it happens.

I think they've taken a calculated risk on Rosman...

JT likes the calculation, this was exactly the draft to take one out of left field with not a lot of exposed form in 2020...

You need to lighten up 58er for God sake it is a game, if you cannot have a little humour about a game when can you ?

But you are not funny OD. Boring and repetitive!! Quarter glass full stuff.

I found this really interesting. Goody did not seem enthused at all, I'm guessing due to their size, and had to be reassured on their quality. Its good to know that the recruiters aren't easily over ridden though and their research and opinion are respected.

Also compared to last year it seems we weren't interested in trading up for any players in particular, although perhaps they just didnt include the footage to keep that intel in house.

Nascent

We had already done our trading up to get 2 first round selections prior to the draft!!!   You have forgotten.

vety good selections and happened the way any supporter could be pleased about.

2 best kicksxand 2 best decision makers Thank you very much and Rosman  the Big Smokey with all the ability and run in his tank!  Ready made fir a wing ( and cameos on the forward line and no doubt at half back!)

Well done JT and team.

Let the tougher stuff reveal the beauty in these decisions.

Great vision. I love the pessimists looking to read in and criticise. Goody doesn’t look happy WTF. Goody does not know these players it is not his job to. Goody should not control who we get and its comforting to see he doesn’t. Goody may not have a natural like for smaller  statured players but do you think he’s not excited getting the 2 best forward of centre kicks in the draft? Holmes did not appear to be in the picture at those two picks.  I suggest we did not expect Carroll to be there but we looked for the best dynamic to go with what the list requires and based on the 2 we had already picked. I also love a bit of speculative with high upside rather than a solid potential. Taylors comment that “this kid could explode” is exactly what I wanted to here.

Sure did. Was worried bout home but was fine re our selections JT just stating truths re size that’s all.

I hope and expect we did draft the best 2 available players with our first 2 picks and one of the reasons they are the best players is because of the reasons given - they are the best kicks and they love the game.

At the 3rd pick I think it's fine to start to look at needs and possible upside and take a risk based on who has already been selected.  I think this is pretty much standard accepted wisdom isn't it?

You do realise that  the Cats Traded up Deliberately to pick 20 and got in first before us for Holmes That's why Holmes DID NOT appear the be in the picture ! He wasn't he was gone Pick 20 GFC!!!!

"Best 2 Available players "can be subjective " Polly and DEESP.

I have no doubt that Bowey  and Laurie were the " best 2 available for Melbournes needs" and that's all I am worried about.

If the best player generally considered at 21 was a ruck and 22 was a half Back flanker MOST fans would be livid if our 2 started starring fir later picks at other Clubs knowing we needed outside runners for our midfield and forward line.

And the list at 34 changes at every no prior with different selections so a  quick reaffirmation of your selection With the "voters' is Quite within order. Melb has 3 mins ( I think might be more) to place our selection so there is no hurry. It's not indecision but ticking your box carefully.

Thank heavens dime D/L ers are nit allowed any where near JT and his team in the Box!!!

I love that behind the scene stuff, fly on the wall JT pumped up Bowey and laurie and echoed the track watchers on Rosman, he literally could explode onto the AFL scene. i also agree that we have picked up three great kids, still kids but could fill some holes in the team. JT is strong on his opinions and you have to love that.

I don't think "needs" is the accepted wisdom on early picks e.g. 1st rounders, it's the best player at that point and as @DeeSpencer says - they should have a list in order and they should just put a line through the names that are picked and take the next one at their turn.

Later on in the draft is the time to speculate or go for needs -like Rosman.

Love how strong Lamb was on going tall. Ko’D sounded keen on Carroll and Lamb just over rides it with “good chat fella but step away from the computer thanks, we’ve got this” lol.

Probably a reason Carroll was overlooked by every side, sometimes on multiple occasions

Very interesting video and thanks to the club for sharing.

I'm pretty convinced that Goodwin was unhappy with those first two picks, and this is hardly surprising given that Taylor seems overly fixated on smalls with decent skills who can't find the football.

I am very much interested in the relationship between the coach, the list manager and the recruiting manager. Surely the first two need to be setting the direction for the third - is that what is happening here?

Goodwin and Richardson understandably looked like they were clueless about the prospects, due to very few of them having played footy in 2020 for them to watch and assess. They were wholly reliant on the opinions of the recruiters, who were going out of their way to reassure the uncertain coaches that the selections would fulfil our needs and wants.

love the projecting that is going on in this thread

goodwin? unhappy! richardson? clueless! taylor? loves midgets! lamb? overrules everyone!

i still maintain that drafting is an extremely inexact science; you're picking children who're 17 and hoping that by the time they're 24 they will be regular senior afl players

it's very much pot luck imo

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
