Nickname Bill? Surely.

I'm happy we've .... got him, yeeees.

Works independently with both names, too.

"Won't you come home Bill Bailey?" and "Bill Lawry"

I just realised why I feel a little uncomfortable about his face when I see this picture.

Changes2020-04.png

It's because Laurie's head looks like someone use one of those face mash-up apps on...

No. 1 selection first among equals for Dees

Freaking me out a little.

I have more confidence in Bowey and Laurie and a good feeling about them that they will be Fantastic contributor's for our club in the long run unlike Tom Scully  AKA Benedict Arnold.

Welcome to the MFC  Bobby and Laurie

Not sure if this has been posted already but found extended highlights on youtube. May want to listen with the volume lowered unless you like high energy techno music.

Looks like a great 'package'.  Watching him develop in Melbourne colors will be a treat.

This young recruit looks perfect (for a change) with inside passing to forwards - from multiple (including long-distance) passing inside the hot zone. It is great to see. A very good, evasive and eyes-up feeder for BB, Fritta and the Weed. I can magnify that with the timely additional acquisition of 'Jake, the Bowey Knife' feeding machine. In addition to these attributes and impressive signs, both of the blokes can 'go the goal' themselves with accuracy, distance as required and somewhat surreptitiously for opposition defenders. Must get my membership shorted ASAP! Both of them have hellishly good foot skills I've noticed.

Agility is really good but he won't be able to side step his way out of trouble like that at AFL level.  I like that he's willing to take the hit that's coming to make the play.

As posted in the 2020 Draft thread, Laurie had plenty of interest from other clubs around the pick we used:

https://www.afl.com.au/news/533681/bids-bluffs-and-frantic-calls-inside-2020-s-first-round-draft-frenzy

And we rated Bowey ahead of him.

Starting to wonder if we took Bowey first knowing that there was major interest in Laurie and allowing more time to see if a good trade offer would come in from another club.

just thinking after the successful end to the season that bowey has had, how his mate would be feeling..

also, watching through a few of the highlights packages in this thread, i wonder where laurie will settle once he gets a chance in our team? his agility and foot skills are obvious, but height is an issue. not sure we could play spargo, kozzie, bowey and laurie in the same team? laurie seems to be similar to spargo?.. but hey, we have always cried out for more footskills and now that is no longer a problem. good issue to have!

Not sure how height is an issue when Bowey is just as small at 175cm and making an impact at senior level...

If you want to dwell further then how is height an issue when we have a 173cm Spargo and 171cm Pickett already playing huge part in our push to a grand final?

The trend is to have 185+ midfielders but if you are good enough, quick good ball disposal and agile then height is only a factor in marking duels when the ball is delivered very high, like Gawns 5 goal.

Please can our new midgets be manic defenders.

Our forward line pressure is woeful.

Quotes that age well.....

Agree. I also think bigger bodies are needed inside, but outside players need running power and elite skills.

The big boys need to get their hands free in tackles. The smaller guys are the ones they should be getting it to.

Sure sounds like a talent.
Given the farce that the VFL season was always going to be even pre Covid, and the absolute cluster [censored]  it ended up as, has he had enough exposure especially for Casey watchers to have a stab as to where he could fit in?

Is he vying with JJ and Sparrow, or Kozzie and Spartacus?

Nice problem to have the way our young smaller guys have been going recently.

Bailey Laurie plays the half forward the role that currently Spargo occupies.  His skills and ball winning are key strengths.  Dees will give him time given he didn’t really play much in 2020 and was injured for most of 2021.  We can build depth and give the kid time to develop.  Still really optimistic about his future in red and blue once he gets injury free.

I really like the look of this kid and his evasiveness. Do we expect Laurie to get some game time next year? Would love to see what Bailey could do in a manic forward line feeding off Brown, Fritsch etc.

Only way I see him in our side is through injury to Spargo / ANB etc. Thoughts?

Probably competing with Spargo for a spot.

Loved Laurie's draft package, just class.

Funnily enough my first impression of him was a version of Spargo with more upside (this is coming from someone who rates Spargo). Looks to have a few more tricks.

Happily, MFC can now play draft picks in the 2s for a couple of years before they get a call up when they're cherry ripe.

A la Hawthorn.

Our trade with Brisbane meant Laurie was pretty close to being free.

We swapped 2nd round picks that both would've ended up in the 30's and traded picks 18 and 19 last year for pick 18 this year.

A very nice piece of business.

I'm hoping we keep the ability to hunt at the contest when needed. That should be our strength and is needed for finals.

But for the home and away season next year instead of having to crash and bash through the whole season we should be looking at using Rivers, Salem and Bowey off half back to control the pace of games and play a more uncontested style. There's a logjam with Sparrow, JJ, Harmes, Spargo all impressing across half forward this year but some of those guys will have to play up through the midfield and Laurie should push his chances.

Even happier for Jackson, Pickett, Rivers and Bowey 'when they're cherry ripe' meant about 15 minutes after they walked through the door.

Spargo's position is probably the most suited, but he would be competing for other spots too. If Pickett gets injured then he could take his spot. Same with ANB.

He would have Chandler ahead of him at this point for those spots too, but could take it from him.

I don't have an issue with his height but I think it limits us from picking up any more small players unless they have super pace.

Spargo, Bowey, Pickett, Chandler, Laurie.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
