Can someone please confirm if we are going to the rookie draft tomorrow and do we have any spots available? Or is that now all been filled up?

Assume we have Brown, Nietschke, Jordan, Chandler and Bradtke (cat B) as existing rookies. I believe we have up to 6 rookie spots to be filled, with salary cap concessions.  (Not 100% sure). 
 

I think we might pass on rookie draft and keep a spot upon for a SSP rookie after summer training. We might invite 2-3 players or delisted players as “train on” players over the next 6-8 weeks and then pick the last “rookie “.  

I believe have 5 spots to fill on our list. It looks to me like it will play out like this - 

3 tonight (National Draft)

1 in the rookie draft

1 spot to remain open for the midseason draft

If we only take 3 picks tonight we will then have 2 cat A rookie spots (as well as the 1 cat B rookie spot).

My guess is we'd take 1 player in the rookie draft and leave a spare spot. But we could just as easily leave both spots spare and fill one over summer and keep the other to fill in season.

If I had to bet on it though I'd say we'd take 1 pick.

Yep this makes sense to me in a way.

Knightmare’s favourites are Jackson Callow, Jack Ginnivan, Sam Fisher, Zavier Maher, Jackson Cardillo, Max Pescud, Kaine Baldwin and Zane Trew.

He also believes that Jackson Hately will be good for the Crows in the Preseason Draft.

It seems like none of the recruiters know that Tasmania exists.  Ben Brown, Brodie Mihocek, Jeremy Howe, Jay Lockhart and probably a few more that I missed have had to play in state leagues for a few years to get drafted in.
 

This year Oliver Davis, Jackson Callow, Sam Collins and Patrick Walker all presented as good youngsters. They were able to play TSL games and excelled against open age players.  Whilst the TSL is not the strongest comp, I think clubs will look to rookie a few of these blokes.  Davis and Callow were potential top 30 picks so they may still get a rookie spot but spots are tight.  Callow is a strong marking forward who kicks goals.
 

The two youngsters I’d look at are

Patrick Walker - wing/half back. He meets JT’s requirements of good ball user, creative, good decision maker.  Excellent skills, good runner and not unlike Trent Rivers. His kicking efficiency is elite.  
 

Rhyan Mansell (played at Woodville West Torrens in 2020). He’s now 20 after being previously overlooked in the draft. Solid year for the SA premiership team across wing and half back. Has very good pace. Excellent skills. I like his run and carry and his secondary run after disposing of the footy to create more options.  If he’s not rookied, he would be a good player for the “train-on” summer invite.

I think we take our 1 pick today, hopefully a Tall Forward that we can put some time into and develop.

The Tasmanian players were very exposed, much more so than the Victorians.  Callow was probably closest but he has been a man among boys at NAB League level, the inference being he projects to not being able to control opponents at AFL level like does at under-age level.  He is very similar to what Sydney's Heath Grundy was in his draft year.  Grundy used to dominate with his strength advantage as a forward in the SANFL and the national championships but only ended up rookie pick.  Same fate probably for Callow.  People like Knightmare overrate these bigger types year after year.  Davis probably too small and not enough tricks for an inside mid.  Collins as an intercepter, third defender type probably too slow and, again. advantaged being man against boys.  Walker uses the ball well but another vanilla player, big question mark can he actually be a weapon out of defence and if he can defend good players.

We need a backup ruck, and our backs are looking thin.  If May or Lever go down then we are in trouble.  Hibberd, Jetta are becoming depth.

I expect though Tmac is likely be backup KPB and ruck.  I would try him on the wing (if he could regain his mobility)

Hope we rookie a tall.

Baldwin was a potential first round talent if not for ACL injury. Good marking tall forward who can play deep or lead up the ground. Yet to know how ACL has effected him.

Callow is a good contest marking tall forward option. Not the most athletic player, but strong in the contest and consistently hits the scoreboard. Think Josh Kennedy.

Henry Walsh as a ruck project player. Younger brother of Sam Walsh, 203cm and growing still. Very competitive, needs to improve endurance and getting to more contests around the ground. In an AFL environment improving his body, could become a solid ruckman IMO.

Do we have room to add another 170cm forward in the rookie draft? I'm worried about our lack of depth in that area.

Just grab a Jurrah/Woenamirri out of the Darwin league.
