Lucifers Hero 40,716 Posted March 8, 2021 Posted March 8, 2021 Yay! Really happy for him. Thrown in the deep end when he first joined us and I'm not sure it did him any favours. In a fresh environment where he isn't expected to be a 'save the defence' he can settle into becoming a very good, reliable footballer. 4 Quote

Binman. Love your passion. Fact is, he's not the player you believe/believed him to be. Happy he's got a contract but will not be surprised to see him playing ore VFL than AFL this year. 6 Quote
forever demons 2,369 Posted March 8, 2021 Posted March 8, 2021 Rapt for him, always felt he was thrown under the bus a bit, like jack watts,to much expected at a young age.Could be the gold nugget find of the season.Still young been in the system for number of years 80+games experience ,reads well on paper. Deespicable 2,886 Posted March 8, 2021 Posted March 8, 2021 It is always pleasing to see a discarded player getting another chance and we all should be wishing Oscar well. Many of you might wonder why we never tried him as a forward (except for two games where he played there out of desperation) and that is an indictment on Goody and the match committee - especially given his brother's switch to CHF in 2018 was a light-bulb moment for our side. Oscar is a superior kick to Tommy and my understanding is that he spent most of his junior career playing up forward. Ultimately however his lack of pace and intensity may have terminated that experiment as well. Those of you who watched his game for Carlton against St Kilda will have seen his strength and limitations on display. They are missing quite a few bigs at moment so he gets his chance and his tank and kicking will make him quite useful and like his brother he has clean hands when marking. But whether he can improve his intensity in the contest will determine how long he stays with the Blue-baggers. 1 Quote
poita 3,944 Posted March 9, 2021 Posted March 9, 2021 Congratulations Oscar, very well deserved. Sure, Frost & McDonald have their weaknesses, but both have played more finals for the MFC than May, Lever & Tomlinson have, and we didn't pay $2M a year for the privilege of their services. 2 Quote

While all of the first 3 do have some AFL attributes, I think that's pretty good going. Maybe you have no AFL understanding attributes? 2 Quote

Oscar tries his hardest and is hardddddlyyy the worst player out there!". In two years? Moving the goal posts a bit there JG. You argued that your opinion that he 'simply shouldn't have been playing AFL football on many many occasions during his career' was 'indisputable'. And as evidence you argued that the fact 'he didn't find a suitor over the trade period and has now been delisted at under 25 years of age' proved your point (an 'near unprecedented' scenario!). To which I responded with this question: 'out of curiosity what happens to your argument about not being AFL standard if another AFL club gives him, say, a rookie spot on their list?' Well, that has come to pass. You are correct Omac has not developed into the player i thought he would in his first couple of seasons. But i will also say that post that period, I was always realistic about his ability. My comments about him were almost always in response to what I saw as inaccurate or unfair comments. For what is worth, I agree that he is likely to play more games in the VFL than the AFL this year. Hell, he may not get an AFL game. I agree with Deespicables comments about the saints game. His deficiencies were plain to see. Realistically he is likely to be a depth player for the blues. You've noted before you have done some talent spotting for clubs. I'll take that on face value. Given that experience, do you really think an AFL recruiting and list management team would waste a super valuable list spot for a player that is as average as you think Omac to be? A player of whom you made this comment: 'posters are beyond out of touch if they truly believe he was never as bad as what some like myself believed'. Do you think Carlton are gifting him a coveted spot on their list? Or perhaps they are also out of touch? I'm not defending OMcac. I wish him good luck. I hope he does well but he's no longer a dee so i'm not fussed either way. What i am saying, is your assessment of his ability is wrong. In my opinion. He was, and is, a better player than you think he is. In my opinion. And the facts are on my side, i have to say. Your assessment of his ability is clearly not shared by professionals who are paid to make such assessments. He was drafted by an AFL club. Played 80 odd AFL games for that club, before being delisted. And has now been recruited by a second AFL club. A club that has the benefit of being able to watch every single minute of football Omac has played for the last 5 years or so. And watched him over a preseason. So the blues are making a fully informed decision. And with all that information have come to the conclusion he can contribute to their club. An AFL club, not some country level football team many had written him off as struggling to even get into. As Carlton's Head of List Management Nick Austin said: “It is never an easy situation for a train-on player however from the moment Oscar walked into the football club late last year he has done everything possible to earn a spot on the list. He already has six years of experience at the elite level, has a great work ethic and above all is a great person who will be a welcome addition to the playing group.” Edited March 9, 2021 by binman 4 Quote
Reader 99 Posted March 9, 2021 Posted March 9, 2021 (edited) Oscar had 6 years with us and was deemed (correctly imho) not good enough Countless times Oscar was shown up as being ineffective Above all Oscar looked nervous Good luck to him personally but it's an I indictment on Carlton picking him up Carlton have little key position depth so maybe his selection obviously makes sense to them but not us I say thanks but no thanks and I'm grateful to the club for having the intelligence to move him on so we don't have to worry about how many mistakes he will make Edited March 9, 2021 by Reader 2 Quote
Supermercado 2,806 Posted March 9, 2021 Posted March 9, 2021 Hope he goes well but don't know if there's much there beyond what we've already seen. However, like Daw if you need to plug a gap you may as well pick somebody who's used to the system. Don't fancy their chances if he's a regular but could be a handy fringe player. Quote

Ah yes, the old "causation vs correlation" conundrum. Frost and Oscar were not the reason we made, or won, finals in 2018. Indeed, it is fairly arguable that they were one of our biggest weaknesses, if not our biggest, and with improvement on them we may have gone further in 2018. May and Lever are also not the reason we've failed to make finals since 2018. And indeed, as I believe you yourself even acknowledged, they were our two best players on the weekend. 1 Quote

We could've kept Oscar as he's no better or worse and saved a few hundred thousand. 1 Quote
