So far only 1 senior list player has been delisted (J Wagner).

Hannan, OMac, Bedford and Jordon remain out of contract whilst Preuss and TMac appear odds on to leave. If they all go, that's seven players off the senior list in total.

Brown takes one spot. Assume Lockhart gets an upgrade to the senior list. That leaves five spots. And that's before the AFL cuts the list size down.

There's not as much room at the moment as your post suggests.

You are correct, I just listed players without checking rookie status. My figures may then be modified, if other players don't go, but we will then have more numbers to fill, albeit rookie spots.

Agree, and it's ridiculous to expect any List Manager to be overly open, especially when they don't even know what currency they have to bargain with. In Mahoney's case with no clarity as to what picks we may be receiving  (or may not if no trade is agreed) for Pruess, Hannan, ANB, T.Mac, O.Mac and possibly others?

I don't why Mahoney didn't say: "look we're absolutely desperate for another wingman, especially now that Smith turned us down, we'd be prepared to trade almost anything to fill that hole"

I don't buy any of it.

They're not 'specifically' going after a winger, but a winger is among our wants, I would say....

Josh says very explicitly that we will look to existing players to fill the other wing role . What part of that is ambiguous for you?

Existing Melbourne players or existing AFL players. Now that's ambiguous.

It doesn't look like we are going for Philips I think we will go for wingman and a small forward in the draft. So this is my rolling team for 21.

B: SALEM, MAY, LEVER

HB: RIVERS, TOMLINSON, HIBBERD

C : LANGDON, PETRACCA, BAKER

HF: FRITSCH, JACKSON, MELKSHAM

F: PICKETT, B.BROWN, WEIDEMAN

FOLL: GAWN, OLIVER, VINEY

IC: BRAYSHAW, JONES, HUNT, HORE

EMERG: HARMES, VANDENBERG, M.BROWN, SPARGO

The only difference is the solid inclusion of Ben Brown. The same old same olds aren't going to do it for us! What's going to change?? We need more personel. I'll say it again you need to trade out to trade in. If we don't land at least another 2 or so recruits particularly those who can run and carry we will be almost as disappointing as this year IMO.

Pull ur finger out MFC .Take a leaf from those clubs who are out there trying to get quality into their lists at all costs.

Lockhart couldn't get a game ahead of Joel.Smith in the end so no. Salem can play back pocket if you don't want to play him back pocket replace him with either Rivers, Hibberd or Hore who I think is the next cab off the rank I rate him ahead of Joel.Smith.

I think this is my perspective too, except that Im not sure he will be able to do it at Melbourne.

Sometimes a fresh start is needed. Whether for personal motivation, confidence, trust from team mates, different internal perceptions/expectations, etc.

After going back, then forward then battling for form, TMac will struggle to reach his best at the MFC again. Bringing in Brown and publicly shopping him is a vote of no confidence (or at least uncertainty) from his coaches.

Well let me put a different perspective. We must assume that BB plays full forward . Where does Weideman play? CHF? Perhaps, but he’s not played there thus far. In prior years Tom McD was not a one trick pony. Sure, he was a strong  mark, but he got many disposals on the ground. I’m very happy that Tom MCD might have to fight for his position , but so should Weideman .  And so far as our defence is concerned, IMV he is the ideal tall defender.  And we need a third tall if Lever is to do better. I regard Lever as a major disappointment so far

I think Weid and Brown can both play deep.  One leads at the ball carrier and the other stays deep for the long option - makes it much harder for defenders to drop off to cover the main target.

For me Tmac was too much of a liability in defence.  People forget that prior to him going forward in 2017, many on here wanted him traded as they'd had enough.  TMac could beat his man one on one and intercept but regularly tried to pull off the low percentage kick into the centre out of defence (that you usually only trust the likes of Salem to execute) and he also had a habbit of playing on after a mark / free kick and getting caught or pressured and turning it over.  When he went forward this disappeared as he could just kick straight at the goals.

Maybe he's matured mentally and can "play a role" down back.  But i think he's lost speed and agility and would be a liability back there.  A big preseason, who knows?  But for mine I'd have Hore / Tomlinson and potentially even Petty / Smith ahead of him to support May and Lever down back.

No he didn't.

He said we MAY be interested IF the opportunity arises, then reiterates his position that we are looking at existing players on the list to fill the wing spot.

Don't expect too many more changes to the list:

“Apart from Isaac, we are not targeting outside run specifically during this period...We’ll back in a number of players we have on our list currently, and give more opportunities to the likes of Oskar Baker, James Harmes, Jayden Hunt and Adam Tomlinson who can all play a similar type of role.”

“We see our greatest improvement coming from our current list of players, as they continue to develop their own games and roles by playing and training together.”

Josh may be joshing but he sounds fair dinkum.

But, who knows what will come out of the woodwork but I'm not betting on any more 'big' or even 'medium' fish.

I find this statement from Mahoney refreshingly responsible - we have a little clean-out, we select the best available/accessible, we get our team together and develop the youth to challenge in a meaningful way. On your toes, boys!

I'd rather give  current day Peter Matera a contract than go into 2021 relying on one of those four guys to be our other winger.

Could be another year of struggles on the MCG, which we absolutely cant afford.

Well you might P2J ...... I’d rather give current day Robbie Flower a contract ...... problem is where are these “I’d rather” players coming from?

Do the same thing with the same people and get the same result.

2021 will be a long year.

I like it. Reminiscent of Victoria playing both Gaz senior and dunstall out of the goal square. Obviously BB and weid are no ablett and dunstall - but gee the thought is awesome thoroughly unpredictable with the like of kozzie sweeping in behind if both prongs head out fast

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
