He's done quite bit of ruck at Casey, and not just this season. In 2019 he did a quite bit of back up ruck work, and IIRC was the number one ruck in a few games (i think because of injury to the main ruck). I remember writing on demonland a few times during that season that i thought Weed's ruck work was quite impressive. One of things i find interesting about Weed in the ruck is he uses his body and strength better than he does as a forward, and is pushed off the ball less. My feeling is he often gets pushed off the ball in marking contests because he slightly misreads the flight of the ball and ends up in the wrong spot, or is nudged off line by a defender who has read the flight better. Reading the flight of the ball is obviously not quite the same issue in the ruck. And at around the ground ball ups and throw in he can plant his feet and wrestle. I couple of years ago when he was doing that i though he had a role as the fwd/ruck back up then. And but only if he can play fwd too. My Issue the role people want him to play is the Jackson role. which he can't. he is fine as a back up but we will get found out if he is taking 40+% of the ruck duties as Jackson was. I still dream of a world where he locks down a position in our fwd line for 200 games, i just don't understand how he can't convert it to AFL. I'll keep dreaming i guess 4 Quote

Could possibly trial it out next year, I just don't feel he's a good judge of the ball in flight. He gets caught under it so often up forward and not because he's being out strengthed. Out backline prides itself on that aerial ability with the zone. 2 Quote

The double advantage is that it might teach him a bit of a different game that could aid in him being a swing man. He’s not making it as a forward, it’s time to try something new. 2 Quote
Supreme_Demon 4,141 Posted October 6, 2022 Posted October 6, 2022 If we don't end up trading Sam Weideman I certainly think trying Sam as a defender is worth a shot. It's basically Sam's last chance of making it in his AFL career. Unless another AFL club such as North Melbourne or even West Coast wanna see if he will make something of it as a forward for them? Wayne Carey isn't doing much at the moment. Perhaps he could teach Sam how to play more aggressively? Quote

Lord Nev 13,512 Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 (edited) Weid out a solution: Dees-Dons trade could set off dominoes Melbourne key forward Sam Weideman is poised to move to Essendon for a pick that will enter discussions to try to finalise the Luke Jackson to Fremantle trade and have a cascading effect on a range of other deals. As the trade period enters its final days the Demons and Bombers are close to a deal over the former top-10 draft pick for a future third-round selection. The Bombers have had success in teasing out the best in another unfulfilled top-10 talent in Peter Wright, after he won this year’s club best and fairest two years after a trade from the Gold Coast for a fourth-round pick. The Dons will hope for a similar result with Weideman, 25. With a draft pick also likely to come in for Toby Bedford moving to GWS – the Giants’ initial offer of pick 44 has been rejected – the Demons will have scope to find a solution to the Jackson deal. The Dockers have offered pick 13 and their future first-round selection to the Demons. Melbourne want something more for the premiership player, who was pick 3 in the draft three years ago, given the Dockers’ future first-round pick is only forecast to be another selection in the teens. Freo will be inclined to add a future second-round pick to the two first-round picks if they get a selection back from Melbourne, such as Essendon’s future third they receive for Weideman, or the Bedford pick. Nascent 9,345 Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 Jackson, Weideman, M Brown and Daw all out this year decimates our key depth. Will need to pick up a cheap ruck back-up in case Gawn or Grundy go down. 5 1 Quote
Adam The God 30,731 Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 I'll wait and see what happens, but if it does end up that we lose Jackson and Weideman, I'm a little worried about our ruck stocks. Weideman would seem to be a handy break glass option as a ruck/forward. It depends if we bring in another break glass ruck as back up to Gawn and Grundy. If Grundy and Gawn happened to miss next year, like Jackson and Gawn did this year, and someone like TMac was still injured, who'd be rucking for us? 4 1 Quote
