I can’t believe how quickly Roos turned things around, and how well he set it up for us to enjoy sustained success, only to then miss the finals in 2019 and 2020.

Sounds like Voss could be in the reckoning for North, who would be a great get for them.

I think on the back of some half decent performances when he took over in 2019 he thought the list was better.

Coming from Sydney where it is all about structure and discipline, i think he may have done a Mark Neeld,  put the rules in place and looks to have put a number of senior players off side.

We can hope the wallpaper over cracks that  Geelong have been doing for the last 10 years catches up with them,  and Thier house of cards falls over, I hope hinggs and Smith choose to go to the dads army, they can't keep topping up with 32 year old and not fall apart sooner or later.

i'm all for respecting privacy but all of this elephant in the room stuff is disappointing. Our society does such a good job of advocating for men and women to speak up about mental health etc. but when something tragic happens like shane tuck, or the aflw player passing away its a taboo topic. We've got a long way to go. Same with gay footballers. Statistics say that there's about 20 gay afl players currently playing AFL yet not 1 afl player has come out during his playing days. Once again, disappointing.

Its possible that there is no gay AFL players, so no, you can't say its dissapointing unless you personally know there is

Gays and lesbians make up about 4% to 5% of the population so the probability that there is no gay footballer is very low. They are involved in every walk of life so why would the AFL be any different?

All the best Rhyce. Lots more to life than being an AFL coach. Not sure why this has become a gay coming out thread.

Because you don't know if there are any, therefore you should not say you are dissaponted.

Sounds like Voss will take over and Roos might be involved as a consultant.

I’d be filthy if Roos agreed to be head coach. He left us after only 3 years with an emotionless robot who’s undoing all of his previous good work.

If I was a gay footballer I wouldn’t come out publicly - and probably for the reasons you make about the struggles of mental health. I think our game is hard enough. No need to add a bunch of strangers making comments and inferences at you constantly. Sadly in other sports when other players came out it was because they’d been blackmailed into it. I imagine quite a few players have come out internally, and the clubs support them. I just think the decision to be public about it would add unnecessary pressure.

I think the point is... based on the high statistical likelihood that there are current AFL players who are gay, it is disappointing that there isn’t an environment of sufficient tolerance and comfort that would support such a player coming out. But we are straying from the topic of the thread (I think).

Well i can tell you as a fact there is gay footballers currently playing in the AFL. I know a gun player in particular who is from a big Melbourne club.

 That's not the issue though. Matter of the point is that in this day of age where society is trying to preach same sex relationship and diversity in the game, we still have gay AFL footballers who are still too scared to come out because of of the ramifications that would transpire from the general public and social media. Its a sad state of affairs but its the reality. 

Yet in AFLW it's celebrated.

Can I ask you an honest answer @Elegt? How would you feel if we had a gay Melbourne player running around? Intrigued by your thoughts on this.

I think the stress and pressure would have been even more extreme this year for someone in Shaw's position.  Week after week of getting belted on the park together with a life constantly on the road with virtually no private personal space in the hub bubbles.

I'd be wanting to take some time out and clear my head if I was in his position too.  And it's by no means a sign of weakness to step away from a situation that's causing great personal anguish and look after yourself.  I'm sure Rhyce's family need him in a happy, well state far more than the North Melbourne football club need his coaching (no slight intended).

And whilst the AFL pride themselves on being leaders in equality in and around the LGBT community, at the end of the day the system/culture/environment isn't to a point where gay afl players are coming out. i dont blame the players, nor do i necessarily blamethe afl but just acknowledge that the system hasn't achieved anything in this regards and not one afl player has come out over the years and there would have been hundreds.

I also thought if the afl are going to take the high ground on mental health they should have slapped Damian Hardwick with a heavy fine for his comments on David Schwarz. For him to say that Schwarz wasnt brave because he was crying undoes a lot of good work that the afl do in encouraging men to speak up about mental health, and show emotion etc. It was such a regressive comment by Hardwick and its just another reason why i reckon he's a [censored]. And with regards to Rhyce Shaw, not mentioning what he is going through just adds unnecessary speculation and further compounds the idea that poor mental health is something to ashamed of.

I agree. But i haven't seen too many afl players take their boyfriends to the brownlow. so call it what you like, but gay afl players are proactively choosing not to come out which is a reflection of society still.

Well obviously the gay afl players think that people care. hence why none of them have felt comfortable to come out. in the aflw, they have already had several players happily parade around their gay partners and they have been in the comp for a mere speck on the afl timeline.

Its all well and good to say no-one cares, it's not our business etc. but you're not recognising that the proof is in the fact that as many as say 30 afl players (statistically speaking) haven't felt that the afl society is ready for it. which is sad

Yes. Also at lower/junior levels, which then discourages gay players from persevering, regardless of their ability.
