I'm only quoting this so the haters have to see it twice.

I think that this is very good news for the team. Viney is a tough player that needs to refine his skills and work on his delivery and not getting caught with the ball. I consider him to be limited by these two elements of his game. However, he is an essential part of the team make-up and brings an edge of aggression that we need.

Viney, Petracca, Oliver and Brayshaw will be the core of our midfield for the next few seasons. I do not see them trading Brayshaw.

It's not logic it's just lazy approach

No mid needs to go to from Melb We just need better coaches with our players to utilise our talents .

I am in fierce agreement with you.

Melbourne tragics,

i am so chuffed about this announcement & it has really put some lead in my pencil. I know some on here think otherwise, but showing this kind of faith from both parties can really build the culture that we so desperately lack moving forward. It is a culture they need to cultivate and grow, & if you keep rewarding the right people other clubs & players see "us" as an attractive place to be. The only trick is being consistent in our signings & rewarding those who deserve praise.

Congrats to all parties & can't wait for Viney to rattle some cages

i'll order some bodybags online... not that i'd know where to look

Viney signing reeks of yet another "Panic" by our Footy admin that saw us do the same thing to sign Goody for an eternity!

No wonder we are so bloody average

Viney 5 years FMD

Depends what they signed him for, I’d guess by the length of the contract it’s probably at a lower rate per year than he would otherwise get. He won’t be on the most money but if we can afford to bring in Langdon, Tomlinson, May and Lever on decent coin I’d hope we are rewarding our home grown players who are every bit as good and far better than some of those

In a time of reduced lists five years should be reserved for the absolute elite. It's the equivalent of an 2018 seven year deal.

I hope the money in the fourth and fifth years is highly conditional.

If we are still dealing with reduced lists in 2025/26 there is something wrong with the state of the game though.

Picking how long to contract players at the back ends of their careers is always a bit of a guessing game (Nev Jetta potentialy as case in point), but you would expect most players of Jack's calibre to make it to 30 no problems and a reasonable portion making it to 31-33, so I don't see that last year as a huge issue.  At the worst, he should make a good mentor at Casey.  Perhaps Jordan Lewis's last season wasn't great, but I don't see it as a big issue in the scheme of things.

the media money will not have recovered by then. The present reduced deal goes out to the end of 2024. Foxtel have made it clear they want a reduction of more than the AFL are offering. ( Foxtel will no longer loss lead with AFL.)

It's either reduced lists or reduced salaries.The AFLPA are clearly favouring reduced lists.

PS I was a big supporter of the Lewis deal but I'm not sure we will see the likes done again for the next few years. Equally there will be other senior players on offer from other clubs if you want a Casey mentoring/backup role.

As they love to say these days... "it's the new normal."

Clearly he does what the Coaches want and we don't see it DJ

We need a 25% lift from Jack Gus and Harmesy and Swallow given some extra opportunities to blend in fir our midfield to reach its capacity and flag potential ability.

I think you mean Sparrow.

...but I agree.

This is one player that had to stay at the club, for Viney to leave It would have just been a bridge too far. Is he worth a five contract probably not.

But and it is a  big but he is a Viney, previous captain and a current vice captain. Who played his heart when we could not beat time with a stick.
If he had walked I suggest a large number of members would have walked as well. There is IMO more to his signature than just his playing ability.

Well for starters that's three needs not two. Refine his skills,  work on delivery and grow a football brain in the heat of things. And he got 5 years. If he can become a nasty back-pocket player I'll take it.

So you are saying this time next year we will all be wanting Jack to leave PF?

Only your opinion but I admit we have to sort out his style of play and our mids link with and take proper advantage of Maxy's ruck work.

Need new midfield coach to bring fresh approach.

No, bookmark my comment coz I reckon this decision will come back and bite BIG TIME!

Positive news. Let's hope he repays the contract with team footy and tackles the opposition so hard that they cry.

Hopefully not when he's the one with the ball.

On balance great news. I'm wary about the 5th year and the role we intend to deploy him in, but the latter is completely within our control and if we do it right, we can make it work.

Just such utter rubbish.

GWS is a perfect example of how classy players aren't enough.

Look at Richmond's recent premiership 22s: players like David Astbury, Dyan Grimes, Brandon Ellis, Toby Nankervis, Liam Baker, Kamdyn McIntosh and Jack Graham were in those sides. Not exactly "classy", but very much "heart and soul".

And as to the "season stats", none of which you've cited, here are some:

  1. 11th in the comp for CPs per game;
  2. 12th in the comp for clearances per game;
  3. 8th in the comp for inside 50s per game;
  4. 13th in the comp for centre clearances per game.

In all of those stats, the players above him are almost universally the competition's elite players (we're talking Oliver, Petracca, Fyfe, Neale, Cripps, Dangerfield, Bontempelli, Adams, Treloar, Liberatore, Naitanui).

And whilst he did, fairly, finish equal second for turnovers per game, the players around him are also elite (Prestia, Treloar, Martin, Petracca and Brodie Smith are all equal-4th or higher on that metric).

    Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

    BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

    Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
