Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

I was told of a huge reshuffle last week.
no names were given, but it was a “Watch this space” so i am not at all Suprised if Mahoney goes. But who will fill his role, if he does go??

Interesting times ahead.

Change always brings excitement, and of the review finds it's time for change than so be it.

While we haven't had the success we have all been craving i for one dont think Mahoney has been bad at his role.

If it is time for change good luck to him, he is a ripper guy and sometimes your time up

Brett Anderson, former Inside footy / draft guru and mad demon supporter now working in Port Adelaide’s recruitment team would be a good person to reach out to get into our recruitment team.
Ports recruitment has been exceptionally good the last few years and Brett is a vital part of that team.

Wondered where Brett had gone, he was great on SEN at trade time, assumed he was another hutchy cast off.

I don't see why this is a big deal, even on footy classified last night it was made out to be something not good for the club.  Every club will do a review of all personal at the end of the season.  You want to get better and you need to ensure to have the right people/structures in place to do this.  If there are better people available for roles with in your club you get them.

Some clubs will decide that they are happy with the current staff and direction, others like us that need to take the next step and improve.  It is more important now as you need to reduce your soft cap spend, you want to review to make the right calls.

Couldn't agree more Dr.  I think the fact that we had such a public review last year and we blew a chance to make finals heaps more pressure on teh club. The media will make a big deal out if this, but every year we dont make finals i want a review, the competition is about making the last 8.. review until you get it right, if its nor right, you go again until you get the mix right.

Huh!!  Maybe to Melbourne (and its supporters) making the 8 is the goal.  Other clubs are chasing their next piece of silverware!  For some anything less than top 4 is a failed season.

In terms of review after review after review 'until you get the mix right':  how many chances do people get if they regularly get it wrong?

We need an expectation that we are a top 4 side or working towards this, just scraping into the finals isn't good enough.

Any business or in this instance Football Club that doesn't continually review is doomed to fail.  You need to make changes to make you better, getting it wrong is OK as long as your learn and adjust.  Even Richmond will do a review of all personal at seasons end, they know they have to get better to stay at the top.

I'm all for regular reviews and changes for the better.  My question was how many chances is someone given to' get it right' if they regularly don't and we don't improve.

On your basis we could get it wrong, learn, adjust, get it wrong, learn, adjust ad infinitum.  It has been happening for too long and it isn't acceptable any longer.

You know what i mean, you cant win the flag unless you play finals. every team wants to win a flag, but first you have to play finals..

Football clubs are no different to corporations, always reviewing, always changing or at least aiming to change, i agree, lots of chance sin this club, but whats the alternative.. no do anything, we have to keep thriving to get the best set up, its on the club.. do i have faith?, its hard to with this club as i believe professionalism and MFC do not go hand in hand at all..  BUt have to keep going forward.

Sorry to air my ignorance, but I'd be grateful if anyone can provide a list of job titles in a FD and what they actually do - like a duty statement.  For example, what does the football manager actually manage?

The alternative is to change the people that keep making the wrong decisions and those that are 'round pegs in square holes'.

I've lost faith in the FD department.  I'm looking to Pert to take decisive action to ensure all parts of the FD are functioning effectively.

I don't see how this "internal" review is any different to any other club or any other team, it happens across any organisation.

What we want and need is an external review, done by non melbourne, non bias industry leaders. I don't see what the beat up or surprise is currently, we've changed things around each year and still Goodwin spits them all out.

Unfortunately, the club no longer publishes a staff list so don't have all the latest names.

The FD structure is:

GM Football - Mahoney.  His director reports are:

  • List Manager - Lamb (incl recruitment)
  • Coach (and Player Development) - Goodwin
  • Sports Science & Medical - Burgess
  • Football Admin -
  • AFLW Coach - Stinear
  • Casey Football Manager - Maynard (I think)
  • Technology - ?
  • Academy - ?
  • Sports Psychologist - ?
  • Player Development - ?

Is it an internal review though? I thought it had been mentioned here and in articles that it was an external one that will hand it's findings to Pert?

This will be Pert's first seasons end Review at Melbourne, a fresh set of opinions with no real emotional link to anyone at the club.  2018/19 I agree we got it wrong, turned over some assistant coaches and the one we brought in seem to have little impact.  Burgess was a win and upgrade, medical and conditioning team have performed well our injury list was short all season and we ran out games, something that would have been identified in the 2019 review.

The big question is Mahoney, from what we were told Jackson rated him to step up to take his role, the board went Pert.  He has overseen an under performing Football Team for a number of years, basically he has been the only constant in the club.

A couple of posters here seem to know about it, I know @A F was one. I can't remember where it was, but I'm sure there was also an article posted here where it mentioned who was doing the review as well.

Plus, an article yesterday mentioned that after the review "Chief executive Gary Pert will be central to the staffing outcomes", which to me sounds like he'll be acting on recommendations.

You are not alone, while we might differ on the quality of the list there is no doubt in my mind that the FD cost us finals this year. There performance in  the first half of the year in particular was deplorable. Selection seemed be made with darts and a team list.

Yeah saw his post and sounded more like an opinion, have seen nothing official to say its "external"

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
