Came across this beauty from the National Film & Sound Archive while researching something else. First 40 seconds will give us all a glimpse of past glories. 

I was lucky enough as a young kid to be there and in those days took premierships for granted. How times have changed.

The rest of the promotional film is well worth watching if you'd like to time-warp back to the sixties in Melbourne.

    I loved that, amazing how one thing can lead to another, the main actress in that film is Elspeth Ballantyne, googled her and found the Boys form Boronia Boys movie trailer. LOL

    Just loved the glimpse of the past. When Melbourne was regarded as the end of the world, it was the greatest place in which to live and grow. It had everything, including a Vic Market mafia. Wonderful memories and very well scripted in terms of inclusions to the film. Thank you, MB - a great reflection. (Just loved Hassa's goal at the start of the film, he could play football!)

    Gorgeous colour footage there from that era. Could have you thinking it was shot last year.  How good do the guernseys look without all the sponsor logos!

    What a magnificent jumper we had at the time in the 60s .  No logos. 

    The sponsorship logos now spoil the look of our great jumper. What a shame ! .

    You could write a phd thesis based on that video

    In 1963 my family moved to the UK for two years. We lived in a middle class town about fifty miles from London. We were the only people in our street to have a refrigerator or a washing machine.Australia must have seemed like the land of milk and honey to so many.

    The NFSA is a fantastic place. I went in there a few times to do a job. Flinders Street with the Head Office in Canberra 

    That Demon footage looked superb, but the whole doco is wonderful

    I literally came across this last night I couldn't get over the quality of some of the footage. As a kid all I had was those 60 seconds of black and white newsreel footage of the 64 grand final to go by for past MFC glory but this stuff is a beauty!

    54 years before the fact.

    ....after 6pm.  No pubs open.  No restaurants. No late night trading after 6pm.  No reason for anyone to be in the city...( same as today!).

    Note the traffic lights on flash.  There was no traffic so they switched to that mode, all you had to do was travel slowly and give way.

    Wow - That bought back some great memories, I was working in Melbourne in 1962 - 63 as a Junior Booking Clerk at Flinders St station (Vic rail), so some of those memories were very relevant and yes the empty streets after 6:00 PM are very close to the mark with our Covid-19 times now. How clean was our city and how smart did we look. I lived in Mont Albert at a boarding house and travelled in and out by train, No Graffittee no feet on seats but you could smoke on the trains!!

    DeeZone shall defer to your re-collections of that era! There may be an alternative universe 'sliding door' moment hidden in there somewhere. Ronald Dale misses the Route 19 Swanston Street tram to Princess Park and than instead purchases a train ticket to Westgarth Station. He walks down a familiar inner Melbourne suburban street and enters a single fronted terrace. He rings the doorbell and is greeted by a familiar face. Over a cold  fosters lager (it is now cricket season)...he confides that he conflicted about his footy future. By the end of the evening "the magician" (stage name Reynard Rouge), has weaved his spell... the rest is 'history', les diables continue to dominate the competition for decades to come...

    Watching the first 20 seconds or so of the game gives me some idea why the northern states used to describe the game as "aerial ping pong".

    I haven't had time to watch the whole thing, but I'll bet everyone who saw the footage of the Southern Cross Hotel at the 50 second mark immediately remembered one thing...the visit of The Beatles to Melbourne.

    Some of the footage predates 1966 definitely. Looking at the cars on the road the most "modern car"I noticed was the 1962 Falcon. I could not see one 1964 Holden which was an extremely popular model.

    Queens Birthday games were of course also enormously popular and had crowds rivalling the grand final.

    The chicken scene would have been the Myer food hall in the Lonsdale Street store

    It's definitely 1964 footy.

    We played Collingwood twice. 2nd semi-final Demons134 def Pies 45. Attendance 93,010.

    Grand Final Demons 64 def Pies 60. Attendance 102,471.

    I'm leaning towards the semi although as a 13 year old at the time it's a hazy memory. 

    Some of the other footage may well pre-date 1964 or be a year or so later.

      Round 11, the second week of The Sir Doug Nicholls Round, kicks off on Thursday night with the Cats hosting the Bulldogs at Kardinia Park. Geelong will be looking to to continue their decade long dominance over the Bulldogs, while the Dogs aim to take another big scalp as they surge up the ladder. On Friday night it's he Dreamtime at the 'G clash between Essendon and Richmond. The Bombers will want to avoid another embarrassing performance against a lowly side whilst the Tigers will be keen to avenge a disappointing loss to the Kangaroos. Saturday footy kicks off as the Blues face the Giants in a pivotal clash for both clubs. Carlton need to turn around their up and down season while GWS will be eager to bounce back and reassert themselves as a September threat. At twilight sees the Hawks taking on the Lions at the G. Hawthorn need to cement themselves in the Top 4 but they’ll need to be at their best to challenge a Brisbane side eager to respond after last week’s crushing loss to the Dees on their home turf. The first of the Saturday night double headers opens with North Melbourne up against the high-flying Magpies. The Roos will need a near-perfect performance to trouble a Collingwood side sitting atop the ladder.

      The two teams competing at the MCG on Sunday afternoon have each traversed a long and arduous path since their previous encounter on a sweltering March evening in Sydney a season and a half ago. Both experienced periods of success at various times last year. The Demons ran out of steam in midseason while the Swans went on to narrowly miss the ultimate prize in the sport. Now, they find themselves outside of finals contention as the season approaches the halfway mark. The winner this week will remain in contact with the leading pack, while the loser may well find itself on a precipice, staring into the abyss. The current season has presented numerous challenges for most clubs, particularly those positioned in the middle tier. The Essendon experience in suffering a significant 91-point loss to the Bulldogs, just one week after defeating the Swans, may not be typical, but it illustrates the unpredictability of outcomes under the league’s present set up.

He was everywhere again, and with the game in the balance, he took several key marks to keep the ball in the Dees forward half.” - The Monday Knee Jerk Reaction: Round Ten Of course, it wasn’t the efforts of one man that caused this monumental upset, but rather the work of the coach and his assistants and the other 22 players who took the ground, notably the likes of Jake Melksham, Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver and Kozzie Pickett but Max has been magnificent in taking ownership of his team and its welfare under the fire of a calamitous 0-5 start to the season. On Sunday, he provided the leadership that was needed to face up to the reigning premier and top of the ladder Brisbane Lions on their home turf and to prevail after a slow start, during which the hosts led by as much as 24 points in the second quarter. Titus O’Reily is normally comedic in his descriptions of the football but this time, he was being deadly serious. The Demons have come from a long way back and, although they still sit in the bottom third of the AFL pack, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel as they look to drive home the momentum inspired in the past four or five weeks by Max the Magnificent who was under such great pressure in those dark, early days of the season.

      The Southport Sharks came to Casey. They saw and they conquered a team with 16 AFL-listed players who, for the most part, wasted their time on the ground and failed to earn their keep. For the first half, the Sharks were kept in the game by the Demons’ poor use of the football, it’s disposal getting worse the closer the team got to its own goal and moreover, it got worse as the game progressed. Make no mistake, Casey was far and away the better team in the first half, it was winning the ruck duels through Tom Campbell’s solid performance but it was the scoreboard that told the story.
