If we said to Phillips, 3 years at $400k, which is your $1m owed for 2 from Pies, plus an extra year reduced he gets another year guaranteed playing and with a slight easing of tax, he wouldn't lose much if anything with lower income and another year of deductions.

Pies would just about hand him to us for nothing, as they need a domino to fall and quickly.

Maybe we are just not interested in him.

Surely he is better than AVB, ANB, Jetta and Jones at their age, Hibberd with one year left, M.Brown, Smith and a number of others.

Anyway this is a strange trade period, so in a few days we will know where we are.

Well, if we want him he could now be ours for the taking, as no apparent interest from other clubs and Pies desperate to make cap space. One would think with Langdon controlling one wing, Phillips with some help from Baker, Hunt and Tomlinson, could manage the other. Wing positions filled.

I think its the $$ factor why clubs like Melbourne are hesitant with Phillips.

So what’s your point?  As I have said 1000 times, I’m happy to pass on some of the mail I get.  It doesn’t always come off but Hawks are still definitely interested but also might have their eyes on someone else at the Pies

My point is your whoever is providing you mail has more misses then hit. We'll see how the Phillips one plays out.

One year at $500-$550k supposedly what he is on at Pies, then three years at around $350k-375k. $500-550k less 25-30% For  salary cap drop!

He would do a great job on other wing To Langdon, running up and down the “G”!

yes he's better than mbrown and smith but u gotta compare it positionally.

id rather flip on a wing than any of hunt, nibbler, vanders, jones, tommo, harmes, baker

doesn't he want something ridic like $600k a year over the next four seasons?

he's....just not that good

Agree. He’s exactly what we need and would walk into our best 18 in that left hand side wing. But $600k is overs by a long way. I’d expect him to be $400k type player. No wonder the Pies have extreme salary cap challenges.  Maybe I’m just behind the current pay scales.

He won't be getting that from anybody.

Maybe he's put a ridiculous price on his head because he doesn't want to leave Collingwood

He'll be getting it from Collingwood, as he's contracted at that price. If he refuses a trade then they have to pay up!

I find it unbelievable that Phillips is on $600k. It must be an overestimate, because they can't be paying wingers $600k when they're paying Grundy, De Goey, Treloar, Elliot etc. It's really no wonder that they're trying to squeeze 3 guys out in the one off season just to re-sign De Goey.

Their list and contract management has clearly been an utter disaster.

elliot wouldn't be on too much coin considering he couldn't get on the park for 2/3 years there. and it was during that time and before de goey existed phillips signed on

Both us and Brisbane did a nice job inflating Elliot's price last year. Probably not to 600k but certainly wouldn't be cheap.

They have a really deep list of mature players, it's not all mismanagement. But they've been borrowing from the future years to get under the cap and that's a nasty cycle.

I've always been dubious of Phillips' skill but he had a huge ball winning season, somewhat inflated by the Magpies game plan that sees wingers push back hard and then sit deep for slow easy kicks. There's no doubt he deserved a decent contract. But if it was right after his peak year and also involved backending to get under the cap that's how you get to such a big number.

My understanding is that the figure of $600k would apply if he performs at a high level of achievement through a season and meets all KPIs - eg wins the b & f. The base level of the contract would probably be around $400k.

Appears destined to stay at Collingwood, after Hawthorn described a move for his signature as "unlikely" earlier this week. There had been murmurs of interest from Melbourne, but the Demons have since focused their attentions elsewhere. Phillips is contracted at the Pies for next season, but would ideally like to return to a wing position after being played as a high half-forward throughout much of the past year. – Riley Beveridge

Watching the Pies through this period may well be the most enjoyable thing of the 2020 season.

loving it.

I know there are possible salary cap reasons,  but i just cant understand why teh pursuit of Phillips hasn't been stronger. Recently we have identified needs, Lever, May, Langdon and now Brown, but its not complete, and i know Phillips isn't Keith Grieg or Robbie, but neither is Langdon, but he knows how to play teh wing, is competent with ball in hand, attacking and would provide outlet kicks for us. like Langdon did. I think its terribly disappointing that the entire footy world can see he would be a great addition, yet the club seems not to have done a lot about it.

Just my Opinion.

I would be a bit disappointed if we don't find another avenue this trade period for some more speed and to potentially fill up a wing position. Unless of course money is tight and we are trying to throw everything we have to keep Oliver, in which case, I agree.
