It was a rookie error by Evil to be so adamant re his mail.

Always leave yourself some wriggle room.

As for Geelong ?  Was it the oldest GF team in history ?  And they're just getting older with Higgins and Smith.  Somewhat baffling.

Oh how I'd love to beat them in a final again at the G in 2021 and watch Smith trudge off.

100%, I don't get it

Haha would be a huge moment! Even better if it was another GF loss for them (and obviously a win for us).

Glad it turned out this way to be honest. I didn't want him at the Dees, especially on a 3 year deal.

Adds nicely to the Cats ageing list!

I reserved the right to say "good, he is hopeless and old anyway" and I shall now exercise that right.

Good news, hopeless and old and overrated and past it.

Mate, i totally understand people pointing out i got this one wrong. but surely you understand things change in silly season. as of 3 days ago when i last posted this my source of information was very confident he was coming. that's how quickly things change.

You'll brook no opprobrium or histrionics from me. Jeez it's full Church of England "raze it all to the ground" brigade here today.

To think people are ripping their own arms off to [censored] you with their bloodied limbs "he's a witch! I'll never believe him again! Credibility shot oneoneone111111111ononeone1111"

Jeepers.

Not happy, not disappointed.

Baffled that Geelong went after him - their supporters hate hawthorn and will pile on if it doesn’t turn out well. Plus they have Higgins coming in already.

It was his doubling down that has now cost @Dr evil all credibility with any future mail that he purports to have.

He was arrogantly adamant that Smith would be a Demon in 2021 that people were led to believe that a contract had been signed and the club was just waiting for the perfect media cycle window to roll him out.

I absolutely love whispers at this time of year but I've lost all confidence in his inside word. He pushed this one too hard and now has to live with the consequences that he is tarnished goods now.

RIP sweet prince.

Again, this was my point yesterday

This sucks.

I just feel we needed to land a free agent like Smith during this trade period. He would've been great for us.

Seems to have taken a 2 year deal with the Cats over a 3 year deal with us. Not exactly a vote of confidence.

Now, where's this Phillips kid at?

You must be real fun at parties, Lefty

I hope GWS play hard ball with Cameron, 2 first round picks and a player, he is worth more than what Geelong got for Kelly.

They will have a pretty strong Masters side in a couple of years

I could keep putting up others posts that basically say what I pointed out yesterday about Dr Evil, but I won’t, I think I’ve made my point?

So Dr Evil, who's next on our shopping list..?

Please tell. :)

Can we close this down now, I'm happy he didn't come because 3 years was a stretch.

Maybe time now for Tom McDonald to get his elite endurance back and hold down the wing and also  be a back up defender if one of the talks gets injured or ruck if Gawn goes down.

Regardless of our pursuit of Smith, the real story here is the continuing fact that the FA system favours power clubs more than it does minnows. Clubs like us, Norf, Saints and WB will find it increasingly hard to supply flags and brown paper bags to entice stars

The easy solution is to ban top 4 or top 6 clubs getting FAs, or force them to trade for them. Though I suppose short term player rights is more important than longer term competition equalisation...

i thought Smith was very ordinary when we last played the Hawks. Well past his best IMO.

He is also questionable now across 4 intense quarters of footy. Has some good qualities, no doubt; but we need a 4-quarter runner and space finder.

I'm not around the financials, but it does suck to now have to use that pick in the 40s. Not sure Smith's contract offer would be that big a hole for people on here to be glad of having to now trade that pick.

Also, [censored] free agency.

Cats are getting Cameron, Smith and Higgins without using a single draft pick. The system is massively broken.

it’s so so wrong isn’t it. why frikn even bother anymore. Feel like i want to stop following the afl altogether.

Appreciate that dazzle. Apologies for the disappointment I’ve caused to any posters. its a strange time of the year

Dr the mistake you made was in interpreting your info, nothing is ever 100% until an official announcement surfaces. Doubling down, day after day, even when there was a rising tide of information contradicting yours was silly. I'm happy for the info, keep posting, chin up and go Dees!

I really want Geelong to do an Adelaide and PLUMMET.  Higgins, Smith and Cameron dont deal with the issues that saw them kick 2 goals to 8 in the second half of the granny.

I thank Dr Evil for sharing insight, even if things changed.  Looks like they came late and hard so what may have been virtually decided was upset at the 11th hour.

Phillips anyone?  Or stick with sauce????

Really glad we didn't land Smith.

Move on.

Just now, whatwhatsaywhat said:

this would be the first time in some time (last three, four seasons) that we've been openly targeting a player and missed out on them?

We were strung along all trade period by Jamie Elliot last year.

That's the game now JD. Players who want a better deal from their current club need a stalking horse.

Bugger him, if he wants to join a GF team, after already winning three, and not a having the spirit or drive to help us become a premiership team, then personally, I don't want him. Good luck, but 'jog on'!

My thoughts exactly he can F OFF

Thank god for that, now go and get Tom Phillips, a 24yo that’s  been top 10 the last 2 years at Collingwood compared to a 32yo with a dodgy shoulder.

guaranteed that 3rd year would’ve been a disaster like Lewis

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
