Because the next 2 years are part of those 5 years - we need to be playing finals next year.  If we are and regularly contending then those FAs will re-sign and we'll be able to sign other teams  FAs because we'll be an attractive destination e.g. go well next year and Zac Merrett may come across.

I think we've got the oar in the water for Smith and Phillips - Smith is a better player and Phillips is younger.

WHAT ABOUT THE LAST TWO YEARS  POLLY?

They arn't part of the 5 years? They were supposed to be wern't they?

Don't know if this has been stated before, but a friend with Hawthorn connections has said Smith is 99% going to Melbourne

I suppose the 1% is if he isn’t, so as to not be wrong. Thanks for the info anyway, the rumours are great this tone of year.

the only reason anyone thinks smith is better is because he's won 3 flags, thats it its the only reason

what had smith achieved as an individual player that phillips has not by his age. phillips got squeezed out of one of the best sides in the comp, no shame in that. you go to the afl website side by side compare phillips and smiths output and tell me without putting a picture/name to a list of stats you actually rank smith higher. its extremely even and then you take in age and wage demands and phillips becomes such a logical choice.

people saying richmond went out and added prestia caddy nank all this, none of them were "stars' at the time but they thrive in the system. we need a left footed winger so get the one whos gonna be around for the success and grow with the group together rather than delaying the problem for two years

I don't get how people can honestly judge a coach to be the difference between success or failure. They could be but how are people so sure this is the case. What's the evidence? Is it in the result?

The evidence is before us. We have recruited well in the past two years (in particular) and player frustrations with our meagre but corresponding results have only stimulated some players to 'lift their game' (Tracca is a prime example of this).

Our player development, in particular, is generally disappointing across the board; given improved coaching focus and capabilities, our player development could be further enhanced for 2020 and beyond. After all, this is the premier state of the game (the AFL seniors competition) so as members, fans, spectators and idol worshippers, we have somewhat of a right to expect improvements across the football department and to so comment if these expectations are not achieved, despite a great longevity in our loyalty and support to/of the Club.

As we sit competing in such a premier league level, we appear to have not appointed a coaching panel and its diversification, its breadth, and its inspirational strategies and leadership to warrant or extend such a series of responsibilities. Resolute patience with the coaching mantras have not produced the results anticipated or achieved.

Here's the comparison at the same age.  If you can't see that Smith is clearly superior you are not looking hard enough.

Last season Smith was better too:

All quiet on the Western Front here... seems a done deal according to most. 3 years is probably a stretch, but it will be good to have another player from that successful Hawthorn environment teaching our youngsters.

1 + jordon clark would be ideal and some more, rivers and clark off hb/wing would make me drool

It's a no brainer offering him a 3 year deal, particularly given that:

  • it seems 2 years won't get him across the line;
  • he'll most likely be good for another 3 years, particularly with Burgess managing him;
  • we have a desperate need for the bloke; and
  •  like Lewis, he'll bring much needed on-field coaching knowledge and experience.

I will be absolutely stoked if we land this guy.

Do you really think we would mind if we won a flag in 2022 and Smith was not up to It in 2023.

Small point at that stage to work around I would think.

We are in our premiership windows. Top 4 should be the expectation next year. And I'm confident we can meet it.

Top 4 was the expectation this year. not next year. this year we showed we're not a top 8 team. I don't see where the improvement is coming from. Goodwin is still there.

I’m ok with 3 years.

Smith playing mostly VFL footy in the 3rd year is no worse than having the Wagners and KK on the list in 2020. And a 3 time premiership player can still provide a little more off field leadership and mentorship than say the Wagner brothers.

People are prepared to accept Jones going round again, but won't cop someone that actually improves our side. The wing has become a very important position in modern footy and I'd rather a crippled Smith, who has excelled in this position, than every other gap filler we have tried

Yup while those wagners boys might have been considered ripping fellas not really hearing much about them driving higher standards....

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out
