Agreed. We were poor against Crows and North for a large portion of those games, and now when we've come up against some sides who can execute a plan as a team for 4 quarters, we've been found out. I think the Hawthorn game was the only game all season we've looked good for most of the game, but even then, they had a stretch in the 3rd quarter. You never feel good as a Melbourne supporter with our level of play. Edited September 7, 2020 by Jerry Lundergard Quote

jnrmac 20,375 Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 It has been obvious since 2017 Goodwin can't coach. we lucked out with 4 good games in 2018 after being soundly beaten by the Swans in Rd 21. Hopefully there'll be many apologies forthcoming now for the bile that was spilled at those who could plainly see how hopeless he was. People laughed at the Camp but the decision of the players to go the AFLPA was a disgrace and showed the lack of leadership at the club. And a real knock on Goodwin. Sadly we didn't take his resignation at that point. And in the crunch games we repeatedly stunk it up with poor efforts and zero footy smarts. Poor scores kciking wi th the wind, trying to play champagne football in the soaking wet like tonight, no one standing on a goal line for a 50m shot on goal. Under 12 stuff. People excused 2019 but it wasn't an abberation. The same old problems and lack of cohesion, game plan, etc were obvious. This year there is simply no excuse. We were the fittest we had ever been, had a full list to choose from, played every team once and just stank it up repeatedly. The players dont buy the game plan. They're confused and have no idea what to do with ball in hand and no idea what to do when they don't have the ball. Its not that hard. We got beaten the same way too many times, Chip kick keepings off, switch play, sit on the outside and pressure the ball carrier and they'll turn it over with handball. Rinse and repeat. We have talent and a good coach would get this team humming. Goodwin aint it. 12 1 Quote

pewpewpew 742 Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 The coach has to go because he can't get the players mentally prepared or prepared for the conditions. Two weeks in a row. BUT the blame also has to sit with the players. Mentally weak and did not turn up to play until halfway through the last quarter. Pathetic. Quote

We need a list re invigoration, not a great time to refresh a list but we need to be pro active. Brayshaw, Tom Mcdonald, they are not winning us finals, but they will net a return. Do it. Of course the players should be blamed for the loss as well. But I ask this, we gambled away everything on two defenders and gave away this year’s first round pick. You don’t make those list decisions if you don’t believe you are in a position to push for a flag. So who was wrong here and who takes the blame? 3 2 Quote

Then Pert came along and it’s a total mess again. i don’t know what to say about the list anymore, It’s the toxic culture combined with poor choice of coach. The football department is a failure under Mahoney and Goodwin cannot harness talent. Its easy to make a difference bringing a club from the bottom to being mediocre, but a lot more difficult to progress to being a consistent, good team. Ask Carlton, Essendon, freo, St Kilda fans. Throwing out the coach without a plan of correcting what’s wrong is a waste of time, the problem isn’t just Goodwin. Even though he is part of it. Quote
Yze_13 310 Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 Just now, Jaded said: I suppose we have different expectations then. Winning against poor teams does nothing for me 2 years on from a prelim. If in 2018 after that mega prelim loss you were told in 2020 we would battle to make the 8 after finishing 17th the year prior, would you take it? Would Goodwin get an extension off the back of that? The answer is hell no. We should be better. Sure - if you look at everything that's happened since with the expectation of 2018 levels all the time you'd be disappointed. Much more so in 2019 than in this year. As I said in an earlier post, I'd rather this than 2012. I didn't think it was realistic to make top 4 with the list we had at the start of the season, and I still don't. It's not that good a list - perhaps more imbalanced than anything - with an over-reliance on inside mids and not enough good outside ball users. I guess we all want the same thing - to win every game by 10 goals and the GF by 20 goals. Just never going to happen. Quote

dimmy 1,308 Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 GAry Lyon was very constructive tonight (and hurting) . He summed it up that we have a very strong midfield group who try (possibly) too hard and as a result dor not play as a team. Hark back to 2018 when Brayshaw was part of that group and was being used better the team played better because the ball was moving, not going around in circles. The three games that we won and until he did his ankle Gus was getting to his better level and the team was performing a lot more cohesively. Look I think Clarrie & Jack are sensational players, but they must bring players into the game. I also think that Trac has to tighten up his decision making and he will be a super, super star. This year has been his standout. Our forward line has got to be more flexible. Again back to 2018 , Hogan and Mc Donald & then Weideman were felxible and provided targets. At the moment we are looking for Weid to be the main man and when he is covered we are not being as hungray on the ground to get results. Again , play Jack as a small fwd and see what difference the contestability is up there. Disappointed and I will scream if Scotrump comes out tomorrow and blames Melbourne for the mess we are in again !!! 3 Quote

Yep - I'm not saying he's got a job for life. All I'm saying is in my view he'll be given a 'normal' year with 'normal' footy to lift the bar, and after 5 years, if it doesn't happen, the Board will move then. I'm sure everyone here would say Daniher was a far more successful coach than Goody. Interestingly though Goody's winning percentage is better. And Neale got 10 years. Quote
