I call BS on this.

Koschitzke retired at the end of 2013 and Nick Riewoldt was getting on so St Kilda was keen to get a key forward & McCartin was the obvious choice as he was the only key fwd among the top draft picks (McCartin, Petracca, Brayshaw).

This is what happened ^
Paddy was always number 1 for them and they were being pressured by their supporters to draft the next gun forward

I recall two points in particular.

1.  Roos said we will take whoever the Saints don't of McCartin/Petracca.  I often wondered if this was a red herring to con them into taking McCartin. I doubt we would have taken McCartin as we still had Watts, Hogan and clearly had our sights on Weideman who we drafted the following year so we were well served for tall fwds.  And Roos was desperate to build up our midfield before other parts of the team.  I reckon it was always Petracca and Brayshaw.

2. The saints wanted their next Reiwoldt but also Richardson knew Petracca's family very well and they were a bit concerned that would colour his judgement.  They took McCartin

We got the star!

no, we would have taken brayshaw and lever

I attended a club function before the draft in question. Although, he wasn’t saying definitively who he would pick, the strong impression given by Jason Taylor was that the top three picks were McCartin, Petracca and Brayshaw (but not necessarily in that order) and that irrespective of whoever St Kilda chose with selection #1, then Melbourne would choose the other two. In other words, had they chosen Petracca, then we would have taken McCartin instead.

Was Toumpas a mistake?

I actually wonder how Toumpas would go out on a wing for us these days.

For all our recent success, we certainly missed quite a few during that period.

Edit - and, by these days, I mean had he someone we drafted in 2018.  I don't mean how would he go right now as a bloke in his mid 20s.

Sydney not matching and letting us have Heeney along with Trac would have been a godsend, but I shudder to think what may have happened if Sydney blinked and let us have Callum Mills instead of Clarry.

It’s nice to have one draft year where the top picks we took have turned into players while the team with number one got no return.

It’s taken a little longer than we would like but Trac is starting to use the gifts he has, he looks so much better when he takes on the FIGJAM mentality. That’s not to say he should be selfish but last week against the doggies he had the old look of not being sure.

Hopefully Christian can REALY make them regret not taking him today.

For Paddy, I think the Saints were desperate for a forward to take over from Reiwoldt.

Paddy always a spud, was so happy the saints pick him, you could always tell tracc was a Martin type player.

We would have taken Paddy and internally we were quite excited by him as a prospect.

At the time Lever was thought to have the potential as a big bodied midfielder but did his knee so was never in contention seriously for the early picks

Who will ever know - concussions can ruin a career.  Ask KK.

Season 1 with CP and his knee the question would have been asked again.  Cant be bothered trawling back through the D'land archives but I am sure there was discussion.

Still, we have won this one

We obviously used the same test for Dusty. Although to be fair I think it was recognised that T.S and Trenners were going 1-2. And I wasn't unhappy at all at the time. I can punch myself in the head now tho.

While we can smile ( a little smugly) NOW there has not been such love for Trac universally over The journey.

Remember  these posts will be still on line somewhere in D/L  from drunken fans, also frustrated supporters about his shocking set goal kicking  his lack of a tank His less numbers up forward and inability to play a starring role in our wins or losses.

2019 was a breakout development year but Trac wanted midfield time and his Msnager  met Mahoney and I Think Goody after season end to discuss his wishes.

I read that talks were friendly enough but the ball was clearly in Tracs court to get fitter and more endurance  ie a tank to enable him to perform in this  role Say 60/70% of game time and not  just cameos.

Fast forward snd the new Trac prob with Burgess precision emerged that Marsh practice  game  at Casey  in a flurry of 30 plus possesssions etc

A new Star was Born !!  Footy world sit up and take notice. I am serious and want to show off my considerable talent !

Well we have come along for  the ride and it's getting better and more engrossing nearly every match. If ever Dusty is chop sticked out of footy never fear Trac is here!!

He really is aClone with his powerful body surging pace and acceleration and weaves rather than fends off, as well as grabs marks beyond his size with a vice like grip! A get out clause for goals when needed indeed.Like Dusty no real left foot to speak of!

Hasn't he matured at public speaking all serious and only a spark of his humour occasionally.

Just let him play and win matches and let Band F and Brownlows take care of themselves   I want a Norm  Smith medal but it's now getting a lot harder with Clarry Maxy snd Stevan May  all A grade bona fides coming along in the same ride.

Well done  Christian May you get your rewards now as you have earned the right to whatever comes your way.

Appreciate the tread to understand from a sliding doors perspective, just as long as we are not smug about St Kilda’s luck with McCartin.. We have butchered more drafts picks than we have got right in the last 15 years.

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
