wretched.sylph 164 Posted August 15, 2020 Posted August 15, 2020 (edited) touche, Trisul. i read 2019 rules and, of course, the wording has to be changed every single year (ffs). however, the free kick was not awarded outside the Playing Surface, so the additional text is not relevant. The issue remains whether or not "where the ball is at" includes out of play, and the rules are not clear on that. edit: i also don't think it matters (cos no free kick should have been given), it's just a minor amusement at 2 in the morning (rules-lawyering that is). Pates 9,697 Posted August 15, 2020 Posted August 15, 2020 (edited) I missed out on the tip (I changed at the last minute) but having seen the closing moments of the Freo v Carlton game I can always be comforted by whatever is going on with Melbourne that Freo exist. The way they managed to stuff up the last 10-15 seconds epitomises that club. They had everything on a platter, but Taberner bizarrely gave the umpire every reason to pay the deliberate, and then the younger Brayshaw did a moronic bump after the Blues player had kicked it to give away the down the field free kick. But Newnes, wow cool as a cucumber finish. Had no right to kick that after the siren. I hate Carlton and love to see the lose, but seeing Fremantle be the architects of their own destruction is hilarious to watch. EDIT in very Carlton style they managed to pull one over the umpire by having Newnes take the kick as well. (And Brayshaw was probably a little stiff, going for the smother and momentum carried him into the Blues player) Edited August 15, 2020 by Pates 1 Quote
Dee Zephyr 19,311 Posted August 15, 2020 Posted August 15, 2020 Can imagine the post mortem on here if that was us losing like that. Taberner should’ve just punched the ball forward about 20 meters rather than that little dinky pretend fumble over the line. Personally, it was a soft down the field free. The confusion for me, is the kick taken from where the ball lands or from where it actually crosses the boundary line? At first glance the ball looked like it crossed the line where the 50m line joins the boundary. The ball travelled 5 plus meters after going out. If they man the mark at the 50 in no way does Newnes kick that. 1 Quote

I just really don’t know what Taberner was thinking, I mean there must’ve been enough communication to know there wasn’t much time left. It just seemed like such a weak option especially as it would’ve resulted in a throw in still in a close enough spot for Carlton to get a clearance and a mark inside from it. I’d be filthy if I was a Freo fan. 2 Quote
Mazer Rackham 14,972 Posted August 15, 2020 Posted August 15, 2020 Also the guy who got the free from the deliberate OOB cribbed about 10 metres on the mark. The AFL will love this because of the made-for-TV drama aspect, but really it looks like an umpiring fiasco. Quote

Who also has a well known short kick, compared to Newnes who can roost it. Zero chance Gibbons is slotting it 55 out on the boundary. Quote

Happy Jack 197 Posted August 16, 2020 Posted August 16, 2020 For some unknown reason I had high hopes the Crows might have dented Doggies hopes today, but unfortunately they are putrid. Really stinking it up. Quote

Pickett2Jackson 3,904 Posted August 16, 2020 Posted August 16, 2020 Get it done Crows. They appear to have found a player in Riley O Brien. Quote
titan_uranus 25,255 Posted August 16, 2020 Posted August 16, 2020 I want the Dogs to lose as many games as possible, but if they lose today you can imagine the heat (external and internal) that will be put on them to rebound vs us. So, if they're going to win, a close win where they play poorly but feel relieved to have won might be the best result. 12 hours ago, Trisul said: https://aflua.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2020-Laws-of-Australian-Football.pdf Unless otherwise stated in these Laws, a Free Kick can be awarded at any location on the Arena and shall be taken where it is awarded or where the football is at the time, whichever is the greater penalty against the offending Team. For the avoidance of doubt, Free Kicks awarded outside the Playing Surface will be taken at the nearest location on the Boundary Line or where the football is at the time, whichever is the greater penalty against the offending Team. It appears this is correct, the distinction being whether the free is as the player kicked the ball (in which case it's not downfield, it's at the spot of the free) or if it is after the player kicked it (in which case it's downfield). The issue, though, is rule says that the free is taken "where the football is at the time". When Brayshaw hit him, the ball had gone maybe halfway to where it ended up. It hadn't yet gone OOF. So, technically, this rule says the ball should have been returned to somewhere around the 80m mark. IMO, the rule in this situation should be that Docherty gets the ball back to repeat his kick. His kick wasn't affected by Brayshaw, so he stuffed it up himself, but the free kick undoes that mistake. Quote
Little Goffy 14,963 Posted August 16, 2020 Posted August 16, 2020 That Naughton kid goes all right. Big job for May, I assume. Hmm, Crows still right in it approaching half time, maybe they aren't so bad... ? Immediately after I typed that, they completed the joke for me by sending a handball halfway between two players who were only a couple of metres away from each other anyway, and both had opponents right on them, at the CHB line. We'll be going in as the predators again next weekend against the Dogs. Quote

Sir Why You Little 37,458 Posted August 16, 2020 Posted August 16, 2020 The Camry Crows have gone belly up They are as bad as The Demons in 2012-13 1 Quote
P-man 13,367 Posted August 16, 2020 Posted August 16, 2020 Not reading too much into this. Adelaide have a tendency to make decent opposition look like flag favourites. Naughton is the danger man though. He makes them a much more damaging side having a genuine target, much like our turnaround with Weideman. Bont also looks to have captured some form. Still backing us in, but the Dogs will provide a bigger test than our last three opponents combined. If we can roll them comfortably it’s time to start believing again. 1 Quote
