I would be interested to know who Demonlanders would prefer Williams or Papley?

Papley by the length of Flemington straight.  Hes a match winner.

Zac Williams would be a nice recruit though.

Didn't Papley want $800-900k from Carlton last year?

He's not worth that money. We are near our cap and got players wanting new contracts.

He'll go to a club who don't give a toss about their payment structure and their future list mangement like Ess or Carlton.

Williams would be sensational coming off our half back line.  Exactly the type of player we need, and he would love playing on the MCG.

But can we afford him, or even outbid, some of the others like a Carlton or even a North Melbourne?  I'm not sure we can.  If we finish the season strongly you might be able to sell our future prospects better than others, but I'm not sure we can pay him more than others.

Williams is an absolute weapon. He's just about the best half back in the comp IMO. Tough, fast, skilled, versatile, and only 25 years old. On paper, he is exactly what we need. We'd be crazy not to be talking to him.

I'm sure I read somewhere that we can afford one more big fish. Papley could be that man.

There is always some mystical player at another Club that Demonlanders get obsessed with who will solve all our problems.  ATM that player is Zac Williams.

A pass from me.  He is injury prone. Get games into Rivers instead.

Williams is a very good player but not elite. We will have to pay overs to land him and salary cap space is important. So, in terms of big fish, I would prefer to go after Darcy Moore and Jordan De Goey, who both have potential to be top 20 players in the league.

As for Papley or Williams, Williams is a free agent, whereas Papley would cost our top pick for the next two years. So I would go for WIlliams.

Yes if Viney goes

No idea if he's worth it

We almost certainly cannot afford Papley, in terms of picks or in terms of salary cap. He's been leading the Coleman medal despite being a small forward playing for a bottom 4 side. He is quality and it's highly likely another club will have more to offer him/Sydney.

While he is a bloody good player I'd rather a mid who has skills or a fwd who can kick straight/lots of goals.

Will be interesting to see how covid affects free agents and clubs spend.

Williams is damn close to elite I reckon. He'd be our best flanker by an absolute mile. Moore and De Goey would probably cost more (in picks and salary) and come with higher risk (Moore injury prone, De Goey could be looking at prison time).

I think he ticks that box. He's played good footy in the midfield for GWS, but gets pushed out by Kelly, Coniglio, Whitfield, Hopper, Tarranto etc.

If Richmond could afford Lynch after winning a premiership, surely we can find space in the cap for Williams.

You ain't wrong there

If we could afford either than I’d be all for it. Both very good players who would easily fit into our 22.

Williams would be a great replacement for Hibberd being 5 years younger. Plus, he’d only cost $$ and not high end picks. I actually think he’s quite under rated on this forum.

He played very well in the midfield and I my opinion was GWS’ best mid in the last half of the 2019 season and there finals series last year.

I’m still filthy we let Papley go after his work with Casey previously. Was right there and we missed it.

Anyways, he’d cost a lot at the trade table and I doubt combos of our B graders would get the job done. For me, I think we’d have to pass on Tom for now.

big yes for zac

we are in list trade mode rather than drafting. being an fa is a bonus not to be scoffed at. if it costs a bit more $s then that's the way it goes

We don't have to trade any players to get him right? If so go for it.  Stuff Papley

Is he a free agent? If not, then hard to see how we’d land him. He’d warrant a first round pick in a trade. He’s a gun half back and also showed he’s a capable midfielder in the second half of 2019.

One I’d be keen on from GWS is Caldwell. Reckon he’ll be a good well rounded midfielder, good skills, good run etc. He could get squeezed out and hopefully we pounce if he does.

Williams is a Restricted Free Agent and GWS have a five year contract on the table for him.
He's gettable, but would cost a fair slice of the cap to lure him away from such a long term deal.

Apparently the Roos are offering 5 years @ 800k per year

Good player, but probably not worth 800k. Still think we need to target a binaries midfielder or tall goal kicking forward.

We’ll probably need a chunk of that money to re-sign some of our guns like Petracca and Oliver too.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • GAMEDAY: West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?
