Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

The Oscar McDonald Appreciation Thread

Petty is a better forward anyway.

But back to Oscar. Any backline with Oscar in it isn't a good backline.

He is slow in the mind and on the field. He is weak for his size. He has no confidence (i dont blame him) and has very lowfooty iq. Why would we let Frost go before Oscar ?

We couldn't afford him due to the 3 first rounders we gave away for 2 B grade defenders

My problem with Oscar is if the game plan works and we get up the ground pressure he'll sit back and make a few easy spoils and take some uncontested marks and look like a decent player.

But if the game plan breaks down and he's trapped on a quick forward he'll offer nothing.

So if plan A works he pretty much does an ok job. If plan A fails he's stuffed. It's the same problem with Lever.

Being a tall defender in modern footy shouldn't be that hard. There's not many good forwards and most teams will provide pretty good defensive cover. Heck I just saw Harry Taylor and Lachie Henderson dominate a game the other night and they are 100 years old combined.

Oscar simply has to believe in himself and offer more. When the pressure is on and the forward entries are poor he has to go grabs some intercept marks. And when the ball is coming in hot he has to find that yard of pace or smarts to get a spoil in. And he can use the ball so bloody get it and take game on with some proper kicks as well!

I reckon it's a systems thing. Our system makes things tougher for our entire team.

When our pressure drops below a certain point our defenders cop it. When our mids and backs fail to deliver the ball to the advantage of forwards, our forwards look hopeless.

It's as I said in the post match thread, there's too much that can go wrong with Goodwin's system and it makes players look worse than they are IMO.

I'm happy with our defence as a unit. I don't think we missed Nev tonight. Lockhart showed some good flashes in the first half and then faded as the team was overawed. Sure, our defenders panicked, but I think because our midfield was so sloppy and our they put in so little effort, our defence was made to look much worse.

In terms of mechanisms for generating scores, I think Goodwin has one game. It's quick decisive ball movement from one end of the ground to the other. We've also developed an ability to go a bit slower when held up. But our biggest problem, which everyone bangs on about, is our inability to capitalise on the hit outs and use this to generate scores.

It used to be that if you won the clearance, you'd get a chance at a score. But then somewhere either in 2011 or post 2011, teams like Geelong decided you could win games by giving up the clearance, provided it was a pressured clearance.

I think the likes of Geelong and even Hawthorn, have reverted to the clearance concession because they know they don't have the cattle to win contested possession from centre clearance, but we do, and Goodwin hasn't devised a system that will enable us to capitalise on this. It's a massive inditement on him.

The very good backmen in the comp still look ordinary when there's little midfield pressure and they're exposed. Oscar isn't great, but he's slowly improving.

If anything, this thread shows that we as a club, both from the club itself and us as supporters, are far too quick to praise players when they play a few good games.

I'll admit - his return to the side coincided with a short run of good form, and he played some good footy, and I was happy to praise his performance

But it's almost as if the club knows that he is a maligned player, so the moment he played a good game of footy they put out a video of his highlights as if they want to stick it right up the supporters.

What he played in those past few weeks is what he should be doing each and every week.  Why we needed to highlight it straight away is beyond me, and I'm guilty of falling for it myself.

It works both ways though.  The moment a player has a bad game we've got the bottom feeders starting threads to pot them.  Then they play a good game and we're all jumping back on.

What's next?  Nibbler comes back, kicks a few goals from 10 disposals and we're starting an appreciation thread for him?  Then the next week he misses a few shots and we're all wishing that he never plays another AFL game again.

Give me a spell.  Oscar is far from the problem with our side at present, but jumping on or off him based on one or two games is madness.

Agreed Oscar is far from the Problem, But for the most everyone was poor last night, which has lead to the bumping of the usual threads/arguments.

at the end of the day, people want to blame/point fingers after losses but with the performance last night you'll need more hands/fingers to point blame at the players/coaching staff who were below par.

I cannot believe people defend this bloke. Bog ordinary, not up top it.

Yep. Played a couple of solid games against average teams at the start of the year and people thought he was good. He should never have been in the team. No pace, no skills, no situational awareness. Gutless.

Look, I'd much rather Demonland have positive threads on our players, rather than it continually be clogged up with threads started by Olisik or Elegt potting everyone under the sun.

But OMac is bad. Really bad. Making the same mistakes he's always made, showing no improvement.

Fingers crossed Petty and/or Hore are fit and ready to go next year.

I remember his first year, and I question why he was gifted games, week after week in being beaten. He was slow, no intensity and lacked awareness.  I said to myself that over time through experience and more game time he'll  maybe get better. Wasn't a fan but was willing to give him time.

My god i couldn't be any more wrong. He is worse now then when he started. He is legit one of the worse players I've ever seen.

He is currently OOC.  Do the right thing Melbourne and just trade him for a 4th rounder and immediately cut ties.

No one can simply justify why he should be in the team anymore.

Oofa doof. Petty, please. Hore is a turnover merchant. A decent intercept market, but Tom McDonald-like with ball in hand.

I’ll never forget the pre season footage the club released a few years back of him slowly bouncing on a mini trampoline (or similar) and being unable to catch a few tennis balls thrown at him from two feet away. That’s when I knew...

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
