I'm confused about all this Viney trade talk.. can someone enlighten me on where it has come from?

The bloke basically grew out of the side of the building and bleeds red and blue. He's vice captain.. does anyone really think he'd go? I just can't believe it.

And from the perspective of the football department. He is again VC, he's one of the first picked each week.. why would they trade him?

The whole thing has me berfuddled.. Don't get it.

I think it's partly because of how much better our midfield has operated when he's not been in there attacking the pill like a mad man. They just look more organised without that chaos. Agree that he's heart and soul, and we all love his aggressive intent, but it is hard to argue that he upsets the balance of our midfield.

I don't think we can play Viney, Oliver and Trac in there at the same time. Brayshaw actually positions himself well better than the others at the stoppages so I don't like the idea of him going.

Because sometimes the player does what is best for the player and the club does what is best for the club.  In this case not sure if any truth behind this who would be driving this, but is strange he hasn't signed as yet.  Does he want out for success and less pressure or does club want him out as we have other options, can't meet his $$$$ and should get end of first rounder for him.

Let Viney walk and trade Brayshaw to justify recruiting more inside mids is the master plan

Re-signing sorry.

He's an RFA, we'd most likely get band 2 compensation (end of 1st round pick) - in a highly compromised draft.

I know he's got his limitations, but the simple fact is that he's among our top half-dozen players, no point pretending otherwise. He rarely plays a bad game and is one of the few players on our list who lifts when the going gets tough.

I can't see how Viney leaving improves our side.

fair enough viewpoint.

If players like Viney and Brayshaw want to leave then look at the coaching staff.

Despite what he’s been saying publicly, there’s no way he’s been happy this year.

Stripped of captaincy, team going backwards and a coach that is very one dimensional. Doesn’t sound like I’d love my job in that scenario either.

For me it's questionable/poor list management to have Viney in the 'surplus to needs' category anyway.

I'm all for more skilled players but our game style has never been about that.

I have long said I want Viney to stay.

To think he would stay because he bleeds red and blue, well same could be said of Daniher.  Times have changed.

And Viney at Port doesn't mean they give up Wines.  They have some aging mid fielders and some young ones.  Jack (and Ollie) fits nicely into that age group.

The closer we get to EOS without a contract announcement for Jack the more nervous I get about him staying.

Fingers crossed.

Moon-man, what you doing here? A bit of [censored]-teasing? Just drop a bit of a bomb and then nick off? Could you have at least put it in riddle form?

Red tastes better with age as long as the grapes are picked from the Vine at the right time.

I think you needed to work in the water (Port) factor into that a little better.

I was going to drop in something about the grapes becoming fortified but thought it might have been a bit much.

We have murdered this club and need to get more stars on board or we'll lose Jack. Currently its not looking good.

He is a restricted free agent so the club would have no say and little leverage. If he says I want out then the only thing they could do to keep him is match his offer. But would you want to do that if he wants to leave. The guy has lost the captaincy, the club pushed his old man out, the team is going nowhere fast and he may or not like the coach. It is not difficult to see why he would be looking around. He spent a good part of his early life in SA. Port seems an option to me. I have noticed that his conversations on field have dropped considerably and he is putting up good stats but if he was leaving he would want to keep putting in good performances to keep his value up. And why hasn’t he re signed. Looks like smoke and fire to me.

It sounds feasible to me, have a look at him on Saturday he does not look connected to me.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
