What the Opposition are Saying: Rd 02 vs Carlton

Recommended Posts

some quality posts on the ol' big footy...

I'm feeling very confident about this game and this season. Look at the team. It's the best it has looked in a long while. I'm predicting a 38 point victory, Betts with 2, Martin 2, Harry 2 and Cunners one of the best on ground with 3. Cripps with a lazy 19 contested possessions and the Jones boy manic. Pittonet will break Maxies nose..... accidentally.

May isn't that big, he's strong but he's "only" 193cm. Levi and Harry have him covered fairly comfortably.

Luke Jackson also making his debut. I really hope we make a statement and get a bit aggressive with him. Give him a proper welcome to AFL footy.

You just know Bennell is going to tear us to shreds.

Not worried about Bennell, I loved him at the Suns, then he had all that time off and re-appeared for Freo and he looked like he was trying to play catch up on the ground. He has now had even more time off. Won’t be an issue.

Looking forward to seeing a Carlton come out playing high tempo hard hitting footy. That mixed with the skill would see Melbourne blown away.

aaaaaaand from talking carlton...

I expect us to be much better. Martin, Docherty and Weitering already showing their impact. SPS too.
The slow start and lack of intensity against the Tigers should have been the focus since then so I’ll be v disappointed if we don’t come out breathing fire.
But I’d also expect the Demons to come out v hard - that’s their strength w Viney, Brayshaw & Oliver feeding off Gawn.
If we can match their intensity, I think our skills and speed will lift us to victory. But without the intensity, we won’t be in the game.

They call Shaun Burgoyne " Silk "................i reckon they will be calling Jack Martin " Grace " before his career is over.Poise, vision, composure and to top it off such a beautiful graceful player.Pretty to watch i reckon.............yeah, " Grace " it is.

I am 100% confident that we will be significantly better this year.
If nothing else, the addition of Martin and Docherty will make a huge difference.
Not to mention the clear leap forward that Weitering looks to have made.

And then there is the stuff that I hope will improve us:
- SPS form looked great against the Tigers but can’t say yet whether that is something we can bank
- Teague showed a lot last year - esp his ability to respond with tactical changes during a game. But he is no longer shiny and new. We will now get to see more of his game plan rather than tinkering with the existing plan as per last or just ‘freeing the players up’ as per last year.
- We can bank on Walsh continuing his steady upward trajectory but we now need to see more from Dow and Fisher who have had a fair bit of senior exposure already; similar with big Harry and McGovern
- And there is the unknown potential of Stocker, Philp, Newnes and TDK to look forward to.... hopefully!

I’m not expecting much from Pittonet - I just hope that he competes hard, a la Nankervis to enable our mids to get to work.

So, I don’t know how that places us against the Demons - I rate their list highly although I think their coaching has let them down. But I do expect us to play much better than we did last year.

I like it.  Like it when opposition talk themselves up, like that.

We'll go in quiet,  low key,  and take them from there.

They talk up Weitering. I’ve seen him play some horrible games. I wouldn’t want the ball in his hands too often.
Martin and McGovern two of the most inconsistent players going around.
Anyway time will tell.

I think the last paragraph is spot on.

Good for them.

It's been absurd the amount of good press Carlton has got following a four goal loss in Round one.

Amazing actually as we also lost by about 4 goals but over in Perth and after being told it will be the last game for a while. Got me beat how the press etc. love the Blues but get stuck into us. Only one thing to do and give this mob a horrible beating.

Unless we return to our 2018 i50 conversion form, the horrible beatings will not continue. We'll be back to the 'Rely on Jordan Lewis to whack Cripps and regain momentum and overrun them' days of close encounters. Or who could forget the round 22 loss in 2016 when we had a chance to make the 8 with 2 games remaining. Yup, she could go either way nowadays.

Can't believe some of you people. Carlton fought back and we were putrid. Give me a break. We were about 5 goals down at qtr time then improved and stayed with the eagles for rest of game kicking 47 points each for last 3 qtrs. On top of this we kept WC to only 78 points over in WA whereas the Blues played at their and our home ground at the G. Yes we could have been better with our forward entries but that is all we need to get right to become a bloody good team. Stop bagging us and geeing up opposition like Carlton. Mind you we lose to them on Saturday and my tune may well change!!

Carlton were garbage and what the media sells as a 'comeback' was just junk-time goals.

With that said, I don't mind us being held to a higher standard, but the back patting from Carlton does not reflect the reality of their round one effort.

Don't see much differences between the two games, we had a shocking first quarter and that was the difference. The Boos had a poor first half and stopped Richmond from giving them a belting. I'm hoping tho that we can do what Richmond did in the end and that was win the game. That's all that matters.

We now have a lot better team on the park than we did in RND 1 Brown and Spargo played that game they are about our 40th and 41st best player. We will win comfortably and we will win our next 4 games. We have our best team on the park for over a year. ENJOY IT!

I mean it's better match discussion than anything on FTA/ch7 and more akin to fox footy pregame in their "war room" - not complaining.

Carlton were garbage and the game was over after 12 minutes. (5 goals down at the 12 minute mark)

Agree to disagree I suppose.

We had the flu go through the team before round 1. Shouldn't have played in hindsight.

We'll probably be awful in the next few rounds with so many players not used to playing with each other. Cohesion is important and Covid19 meant we couldn't even train together.

We have had a habit of being lackluster vs Carlton in the past and after their upswing last year and out plummet there have reasons to be confident. But we have a close to full strength team to pick from and the injection of HB should give us plenty of confidence coming into this game.

Simply put this has to be translated into a win, on paper this should be a better team than the one that got through to the prelim only a couple of years ago.

We are in no place to be bagging any other side. How many times have we thought "this will be easy", only to get pumped?

I'm confident of a win, but not confident that we can't lose.

Why does where he is from have anything to do with it? This sort of bias has to be called out.

Not cool, McQueen.

Exactly. Garry Lyon has tipped the Blues.

Carlton were much better than we were in round 1.

But I think many experts continue to underrate our list and our coaching staff - essentially based on our abhorrent performance in 2019. They’ve conveniently ignored the reasons for our performance in 2019, and what we’ve done since to address those issues.

GoodwIn is a better coach than most people think (I reckon he’ll be our senior coach for the next decade), and the additions of Burgess, Richardson, Langdon, Tomlinson and certain others who have filled the gaps which were horribly exposed last year.

Dees to win - but not by much.

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full
