Max Gawn is Captain in 2020

I'm glad Jack is still vice-captain, and it sounds like the club handled the situation well in that they kept Jack in the loop the whole way and didn't just surprise him with it.

I think Max is the right man for the job and he could very well lead us back into the finals this year.

This is fantastic news. No unnecessary, confusing shared captaincy gig, and the right man is now in the role. Jack can focus on being a bull, Gawny inspires the troops.

Now let's get to winning that flag.

Wow, a sole Captain and no leadership group.
 SWYL is most impressed

Back to the old days, Leadership groups are always hollow to me.
Everyone on the field has a job to do, just do it and support your teammates.

Fantastic news and looks like the process with Jack has been handled in the right manner.

Well done Maxy and well done MFC.

Old school is the best school.

-Captain

-Vice Capt.

That's all you need, everyone else are leaders on the ground.

So if we win the whole thing this year, will it be the highest the premiership cup has ever been lifted?

Is Max the AFL's tallest ever captain?

Congratulations Max. I think you will do a great job.

Agreed.  If the young guys and new commers to the club can't work out that you take a lead from the senior guys with the track record and right attitude, then they have rocks in their heads.  Informal leadership groups still exist outside of the captain, VC and coach.

Leadership Groups just dilute the whole structure, so people don’t get offended

Another quality off-season call by the club.

Having seen the Ep 3 of the series to hell and Back, they'll all lead at times during the course of a game IMO.

Really happy with this.

The no leadership group thing is probably inconsequential other than the statement Mahony made about it - that it's up to the whole group to inspire leadership, not to an appointed few. If that's the messaging that's actually being put to the players, and To Hell and Back suggests it is, then I'm all in favour.

I think this is actually a good thing culturally to be able to shrug some of the blue blood, private school elitism that the clubs stereotypical image is built around.

I don't think Jones really met that stereotype.

Brilliant news and good decision to select Max!

No formal leadership group is a big tick too. It puts ownership on all the players to lead, and allows natural leaders to grow without fear of overstepping.

Viney as vice-captain is good too. Sounds the club handled it well internally and recognise he is still valuable to lead by example with his toughness and intensity.

Look forward to more Gawny interviews!

Agree fully. Abolishing leadership groups and getting rid of co-captaincy strengthens the role of the sole captain. Clear lines of leadership are maintained.

Of course, when there hasn't been an obvious candidate capable of showing leadership, perhaps co-captaincy and leadership groups are needed then. But my opinion has always been that if the club can do so, it should have a single captain and a single vice-captain.

Good idea staying away from anything public schools at the moment.

Monumental name with an inbuilt rally call name. Magic to be there within the First Game clamor .....MAXEE, MAXEE,MAXEE.....

Way surpasses Carltons and Geelongs....

Possibly equal tallest with Jarrod Witts who is also listed as 208 cm.

    GAMEDAY: Rd 13 vs Collingwood

It's Game Day and the Demons are once again faced with a classic 8 point game against a traditional rival on King's Birthday at the MCG. A famous victory will see them reclaim a place in the Top 8 whereas a loss will be another blow for their finals credentials.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie
