Probably not, but risk well worth taking in this case. Outside of being a rare athlete when up and running, Bennell would have better skills on his left foot than most our players had on their preferred. There is a reason why this cat is being given his full nine lives. Nothing lost if this experiment fails. Its one of my most supportive moves the club has made.

Agree there is not much to lose and plenty to gain in PR remembering he was a star in to hell and back

salt never tasted better ?

It may be becoming more and more likely that Bennell is going to light up the 'G ... and put paid to some of his supporter critics. The young man needs a break; we should be offering nothing but absolute encouragement to him with open arms.

I would love nothing more than to roll him out against Freo and see him star.

Given that most of the league are going to be as rusty as hell in round 2, and there is going to be extended benches, there may be a slight argument in favour of Bennell getting there for round 2 - If he really is tracking well.

Play him on extremely limited minutes and hope his natural talent shows through.

Just plonk him in a forward pocket and he can slot through those inside out banana goals from the boundary like shelling peas.

Kozzie seems to be good at those too. Put one in each pocket!

Harley Bennell poised to push for AFL selection at Melbourne after making progress in recovery

Paywall protected I guess. Brief article.

"The Melbourne recruit cut a striking figure on Saturday as he trained with former Gold Coast teammate Luke Russell at Gosch’s Paddock.

He is understood to be happy with the way he’s tracking after years of well-documented soft tissue injuries.
.........

“He’s doing a lot of his running program, getting some really good load in so there’s a really good chance he’ll rejoin the group when we come back into training and train with us, and be available for selection after the first few weeks.

“That’s an exciting thing for us.”

Nice little article on the AFL site

Gee I hope this punt pays off for us.  About time the chips started to fall our way.

... and I love Harmesy, but he isn't exactly the brightest spark sometimes - he is quoted in the article as not knowing that Bennell is a really good kick and that he didn't know that.  You'd think most mids in the comp would know what kind of silky skills Harley has.

 The clubs way too NC.?

Burgess was the best recruit by any club in the off season.

He’ll be ahead of the curve in the post COVID-19 world when it comes to training and preparation i.e. the world we’re now in.

Competence always shines through in broken water.

My first concern is for him. I hate seeing wasted talent. If he is successful in making a comeback, then naturally we will benefit - and I cannot wait for that.

Last night, Mark Stevens from channel 7 said the club will not be playing Bennell in round 2 but he may return in the early rounds if things keep progressing.

  • PREGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

With their season all over bar the shouting the Demons head back on the road for the third week in a row as they return to Adelaide to take on the Crows. Who comes in and who goes out?

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.

  • GAMEDAY: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons are back on the road again and this may be the last roll of the dice to get their 2025 season back on track as they take on the Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

The Gold Coast Suns find themselves outside of the top eight for the first time since Round 1 with pressure is mounting on the entire organisation. Their coach Damien Hardwick expressed his frustration at his team’s condition last week by making a middle-finger gesture on television that earned him a fine for his troubles. He showed his desperation by claiming that Fox should pick up the tab.  There’s little doubt the Suns have shown improvement in 2025, and their position on the ladder is influenced to some extent by having played fewer games than their rivals for a playoff role at the end of the season, courtesy of the disruption caused by Cyclone Alfred in March.  However, they are following the same trajectory that hindered the club in past years whenever they appeared to be nearing their potential. As a consequence, that Hardwick gesture should be considered as more than a mere behavioral lapse. It’s a distress signal that does not bode well for the Queenslanders. While the Suns are eager to remain in contention with the top eight, Melbourne faces its own crisis, which is similarly deep-seated but in a much different way. After recovering from a disappointing start to the season and nearing a return to respectability among its peer clubs, the Demons have experienced a decline in status, driven by the fact that while their form has been reasonable (see their performance against the ladder leader in the Kings Birthday match), their conversion in front of goal is poor enough to rank last in the competition. Furthermore, their opponents find them exceptionally easy to score against. As a result, they have effectively eliminated themselves from the finals race and are again positioned to finish in the bottom half of the ladder.
