I see us waiting til draft day, waiting to see who is available at our pick 10 (slipped to 11 or 12) and the certainty of the players on offer enticing another club to take the plunge.

I think 10 and 28 comfortably gets us 15 & 20 from GC, maybe a little bit more.

Then you can grab Pickett with 20, and maybe a Weightman, Bergman or Rantall with 15.

I think the big risk at the moment is that Pickett is taken by Hawks, Port or Doggies after our pick 10.

Highly doubt we can split pick with Port, as they want all 3 picks before 18 before a bid on Mead, therefore I doubt 28 is of interest. This leaves Geelong and GC as options, but the risk may be too great we will miss out on Pickett at those picks.

I wonder how many spots GC have. Will they use 20? If not, they won't use 28 either. Maybe we can keep that too (although maybe we won't  have space to use 28 if we have 3, 15 and 20)

Hawthorn apparently have some interest in Dylan Stephens. Wonder if that opens up the conversation for a pick swap with Port if Stephens gets through. Kemp may be around in the teens.

The other concern is Hawthorn have a future first round pick to play with, as do Freo, Collingwood, no doubt Gold Coast and several other teams. North have 3 picks between 25-30 and the Cats obviously have a big hand.

Port used their future first to get pick 16 from Brisbane, so I'm not sure Collingwood or Hawthorn will be able to buy a pick inside of that range. But Freo, maybe if a team takes a chance on them not being very good next year.

My guess is Hawthorn, Port and the Dogs all stay at 11-13, they'll want guys ranked in their top 7-10 players and will pick them, it's too hard to say no to a Kemp, Stephens, Weightman pick there I think.

But 14-25 could be an absolute minefield or teams going up or down the order with future first round picks and 2nd rounders flying in for players.

The trade down to 14/15 and still get Pickett could work - although there's less chance given our intentions are apparently telegraphed all over the Herald Sun - but having any idea of who will last to 17/20 with the second part of that deal would be nearly impossible.

Yes it is likely Cats will offer 14 and 17 or Suns offer 15 and 20.  Interesting offers but I’d still stick with pick 10.  It’s likely to get a slider from the top 4-5 players rated behind Rowell and Anderson.  Kemp or Ash or Serong or Stephens could be available.

I would be happy with Ash, Serong or Stephens slipping through to number 10.

Maybe Kemp...but I think Sydney or Carlton will snap him up.

If we are taking Pickett, then I hope Sydney take him, so we won’t have to revisit the draft over and over if Kemp becomes a star.

I think there is some chance of getting Kemp at 15 and Pickett at 20 i think most on here would be pretty happy with that result.

Watched him closely in his Nat games as many were keen on him early (me included).  Just my amature take but not sure he'll be a Cripps type through the mid Red.  Possibly a very handy one though and a solid utility also, particularly up forward.  Lovely set shot action which should hold him in good stead when played / drifting forward.  Loves a contested mark as well.

The glass half empty view on Kemp (ignoring his ACL) is that he is a jack of all trades, master of none. There are many players in the league who seem to be able to float around and play anywhere, but those are rarely the superstars. Doesn't mean he won't be/isn't a gun. But most of the best players are stars of their respective position, not just good at lots of positions.

That said, I would be happy to see Kemp in the red and blue, if the cards fall that way. Even if he never rises to the top echelon of players. But as it sits now I don't think he's likely to be picked by us

Twomey just mentioned Melbourne still potentially looking at a further split and, while nothing certain, suggested a deal could be 10 and 28 for Ports 12 and 18. Sounded more like we were canvassing our options and a deal probably unlikely at this stage.

I hope we split it now, we might be more inclined to take a slider at 12 if we think we can get Pickett or Weightman at 18 instead of having to take them at 10.

For Port to make that trade they need to believe that Hawthorn will take the player they want at 11.

Geelong are apparently offering pick 14 and pick 17 for a top 10 pick.

Would we swap pick 10 and pick 28 for pick 14 and pick 17?

Certainly worth considering unless we are worried Pickett or Weightman will go earlier than pick 14?

Still praying this is how it went down:

GWS want assurance from us we won't bid on Green before trading for pick 4. We say "ok we won't bid, but you gotta promise not to pick Young or Sydney's preferred player, and Sydney, you gotta promise not to pick Young or bid on Green." A trade of words if you will.

We then go to Freo who want to trade for 8 and say "alright we'll only do the trade if you promise not to pick Young or Carlton's player, and Carlton in return also can't pick Young".

Maybe we got Adelaide involved as well. And BAM Young gets to pick 10.... I can dream.

What, dream we get done for draft tampering?

Don't think Port want McAsey but Hawks do. If Adelaide take Dylan Stephens then it might all work.

Wish they would just hurry up and pick someone so we can start criticising them.........

Speaking to AFL.com.au's Draft Night Countdown on Wednesday, Geelong list manager Stephen Wells replied in the affirmative when asked if he would be willing to part with some of his prized selections to move up the order in a bid to land defender Fischer McAsey.

"Yeah we would. Not just Fischer, but any of the players really that we think are top-10 players," Wells said.

"We're looking to improve our position in the draft but we're not willing to give up the farm to do it, so to speak.

Cats put first-round picks on the table to move up draft order

Come on. This really isn't the kind of tampering they're worried about. It doesn't unfairly disadvantage anyone, every club benefits. Clubs try to scare each other by threatening particular picks through the media as it is.

And why wouldn’t Port use #10 on Pickett? Who do we get with #18 (assuming we draft someone decent at #12)?

It's also the MFC way to be guilty/not guilty of an offence at the same time (eg Tanking)

No idea. Your guess is as good as mine.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
