It is great news. I have been waiting for Lewis' activation in the coaching sector for just over twelve months now. He has a very great amount to offer the MFC - as a coach/communicator - and it was sad to see such a player attempt to carry the footballing load in the very twilight of his playing career. Kicking coach, forward strategies coach and more. I guess it could all start for him here. Great to have him onboard.

I’m just excited they’re going to be working on our appalling skills.

The is goody the right coach was the favoured medium for this cabal. When I have pushed back on this front some have accused me of being a club lackey. Some of the less credible of this group have hilariously, seemingly seriously  suggested I am an mfc employee reverse trolling.

Well that group have gone very quiet of late as the evidence builds of a club that is the very opposite of the baskstcae some have tried so hard to paint us as.

 

Very happy with this. He's the consummate professional and a born winner. It would be nice to turn the appointment into a more expansive role at some later stage.

is @TGR the guy who I saw post recently claiming that Lewis didnt buy into the MFC?

Must feel a bit silly now.  Jordan  could have got a gig at just about any club but came back to us.

This is good. Skills, sure ... the biggest thing he has to pass on is his steel trap football brain. He's been the pioneer for the "experienced onfield coach" which all the lower sides now want in their side. (To be fair, Cross was probably the prototype for this.)

"How to win" will be his most important teaching. It's a testament to what the club is building that he has stuck around and not washed his hands of us.

One of the very best pieces of news in a very long time.  ???

All water under the bridge now, but one wonders if even he would be able to help Frosty with these particular  aspects of his game, especially decision making?  Perhaps he tried and failed, so felt it was better to cut our losses and send him to Hawthorn.

Not sure JSK - that would require at least two mental qualities that I have not seen in this particular poster: insight and humility.

We offered a level 4 coach a 3 year deal; which included kicking as a part of the brief.  He could make a footy talk....drawing, fading...you name it.  He thought long and hard, but ended up saying no.

While Lewy is our 2nd choice, I welcome it.  Should have happened years ago.  

Is he our discipline coach too?

He still gets to follow his media career as desired DF.  This is a part time role that will occur mostly in the off season allowing him to pursue his other role during season proper.

Nonetheless this is vg news in terms of the calibre of (ex) player offering his services, knowledge base and especially his cred to a playing group much in need of a serious injection of kicking skills.

Hopefully he can fix some of the stuff above the head as well, which probably accounted for a pretty high percentage of some of the faults that were on display in 2019.

Agree with this, although as much as the recruitment of skills coaches provide some appeasement, I tend to take them with a grain of salt. Ben Dixon was one of the most accurate goal kickers of the modern era and has had seemingly no positive effect as a goal kicking coach at St Kilda. Their forwards still can’t hit the side of a barn or several barns put together.

Sadly, Lewis can’t go out there and kick it for them, however at this stage I’ll take any help we get. It’s an area where we have been far too poor for far too long.

Best thing of all he knows most of the current players weaknesses having been in the action with them, and will now have more clout to be able to advise them how they can improve 

The only player I have ever seen who can hook or slice depending on his angle.

i’m not much of a believer in kicking coaches but for Lewis I make an exception.

I love everything the club is coming out with in recent weeks, it really flies in the face of a few doomsayer posters on this site. I thought this club was in crisis? I mean; Goodwin was to be sacked (didn't eventuate, and ended up signing Richardson to help Goodwin the same week), players wanted out en mass (didn't eventuate, with only 1 player requesting a trade after we didn't offer a contract), Lewis leaving the club disenfranchised (didn't eventuate, and ended up signing him up as a part time kicking coach).

Am I seeing a pattern here? Everything that some have posted as gospel of a club in crisis hasn't occurred, and in fact in most cases, has ended up being the exact opposite!

Excellent appointment and continues an off and pre-season full of hope and genuine promise that 2019 was the year we had to have to reset on top of our build of the previous Roos/Goody/Jackson era.

I think the message is abundantly clear that all the errors and misfortune and frustration of 2019 is not going to define us as in crisis or a basket case nor will we go back to the 07/13 rabble.

Bring On 2020 which seems to be evolving much better than most fans even thought possible. Of course Ws and Ls are the criteria but our preparation has started by all Board Coaches and FD most impressively.

Well said and you could add how tight the club seems in regards to no leaking and backgrounding . Its up to Goody and the team now but they have been given the platform off season they need to succeed

This is a good, strong decision from the club and it goes well beyond kicking improvement(which is desperately needed!)

He has a footy brain and ability to actually communicate what he knows. He showed it on the ground under pressure (until his last few weeks anyway) and now has time to plan, develop and implement an entire kicking program. Articulate footballers are few and far between so well done the people who convinced him and signed him.

He has a physical presence based on a mindset that wants to dominate and destroy his opponents. At Hawthorn and a couple of times at the Dees this mindset crossed the line into thuggery which I don't like, but in the main I hope he is also able to demonstrate to the other players how to be mentally strong and physically imposing as well as how to kick.

Have said for a long time I think Lewis will make a good coach one day. He’s a very smart guy and seems an astute communicator and mentor.

Often I reckon this is our weakness with quite a few players.

In Geelong's halcyon days post 2007 they had an Elite Decision Making coach - David Wheadon. A brilliant thinker of the game and imparter of knowledge.

When discussing the 2011 premiership he told me how important this issue was to that win, including Harry Taylor's marking at CHB. Everyone in the media raved about Tom Hawkins, but as David noted Hawkins was playing on an opponent on 1 leg (Chris tarrant I think??). Its the team decision strength across the filed that stood out over the day.

The Lewis appointment can only be upside in this for the Dees. 

And an elite standard-setter and giant footy brain inside the tent.
