How is "Multicultural" defined? i.e Family history goes back 5 generations in Australia including Irish/English/Welsh so does that count?

Multicultural participants must either have been born overseas, or has one parent who was born overseas.

Which is stupid because it means if you or one of your parents were born in England than you qualify. I would have thought you also need to have grown up speaking another language. So if you grew up in England (or India.. or Frankston... ) speaking Hindi than you should qualify but if your main language was English than bad luck.

Massive difference, Sydney/GWS/Brisbane/Gold Coast have full access to any kid in their zone no matter where they come from.  All other clubs are restricted to Indigenous and kids with one parent born overseas(multi-Cultured), WA in relation to other states have much higher participation of Indigenous kids in AFL football they will always have 1-2 each each from their NGA.

Shouldn't the Established Northern clubs loos that advantage now?  Sydney and Brisbane with GWS soon to follow.   Do we have a productive zone anywhere?

I can't think off the top of my head of another country that has the same geographical sporting schism we have in rugby v footy that then leads to the ridiculously convoluted and ham fisted decisions made to try and alter it.

The plot thickens. The Suns get to pick a player from Darwin and the Dees get peanut shells.

Suns' likely Darwin pick set to bring pace, pressure and tricks

so how much academy development work did the suns do on him?

oh, that's right....none, zip, nada

surely the fair way to switchover from dees to suns would be the start of 2020

first they steal our pick 2 off us and then the steal our potential academy pick......for no compo

We will do nothing. We may as well have dropped the soap.

I'm unsure whether M Rosas was ever coming to us - e.g. this website mentions nothing about it (sounds like hes going to the draft and this rule change now gives him to gold coast - nothing about us): https://www.aflnt.com.au/news/2019/rosas-invited-to-2019-afl-draft-combine

Although his highlights are quite nice - rioli like:

Suns get access to Darwin.   Bingo.  Now they get direct
access to a talent pool where the Riolis and Longs originated.

Why not just give them 4 games each year as a headstart!!

Do the get the Tiwi Islands as well or just Darwin, I think Hawthorn and Essendon have the Tiwi Islands and the AFL won't upset them.

The NGA as it currently stands is a total farce, it is basically returning to the old Zones for the northern state teams and token zones for the rest

Just catching up with this thread and did some checking on the Melbourne linked players named there in.

iirc allocation to a zone depends on where a player lives/plays junior footy.  Martin plays for South Alice and Lowe for Federal (Alice Springs) so it can be assumed they live in our Alice NGA zone so I would think we retain drafting rights.

Moniz-Wakefield plays for Nightcliff, a suburb of Darwin.  It is unclear if he lives in GCS's Darwin zone or in our Alice zone (probably Darwin as Nightcliff is a long way from Alice) so his family may have moved to Darwin.  So its unclear which club he will be attached to.

To me this highlights one of the problems of the NT NGA zoning.  If a club identifies a player they like it would be quite easy for that club to re-locate the player and some family to their NGA zone, especially if near an NGA zone boundary.  Its ripe for manipulation by the less scrupulous clubs...I believe this happened here in the days of VFL zones!

As it is the AFL has had to rule on some players GWS have claimed as Academy players because of the lack of clarity on how a player is allocated to a zone.

Only if clubs don't play fair.

Also, I think it is up to each club to set up programs and resources in their zone, identify the talent and develop it.  If we do that well and get a good reputation up there then we can make a strong case for keeping players in our zone if there is ever a dispute.

With all the NGA players taken this year, thought I'd do some digging on names mentioned in a previous Melbourne NGA article. Two names stand out as possible draft targets being.

Andy Moniz-Wakefield and Tyrell Martin.

Moniz-Wakefield is believe was under Melbournes Darwin zone which we no longer have so likely GC prospect. Made his NTFL debut this year and awarded their equivalent Rising Star award in his first game.

Martin is allocated through our Central NT zone. Not a lot of information but found this article. Might be playing SANFL next year if I'm not mistaken.

MikeAlpha, does that effectively mean we have first crack at Tyrell Martin next year? I'm guessing yes.

Fairly certain he will be a bottom ager next year and draft eligible at the 2022 draft.

I'm pushing it. Is he any good?

If he’s any good, then we get rolled. NGA rule changes effective from 2021 draft mean any NGAs picked inside top 20 can no longer can be matched by affiliated academy club. Bulldogs we’re spooked that changes might come into effect from ‘20, but lucked out.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
