Most likely explanation is trade for Yokozuna's forward IMO.

We could do the pick split with GWS - 3 for 6 and 2020 1st and be back in next year's 1st round.

Seems to me this is a bold trade, and I like it. We "lose" on points value even if we win the premiership next year, but clearly we value the 2019 first round more than the 2020 first round (and there is good reason to hold that belief).

I'd be happy for us to take 3 and 8 to the draft, get two top 10 kids, and hit the ground running for 2020.

I'd also be happy if we have something in the pipeline to trade 3 or 8 for an established A-grade player. There have been rumours going around that we're into a forward, and we know the club doesn't leak (this deal wasn't mentioned anywhere until minutes before it was confirmed by the AFL), so I think it's completely feasible we have a plan.

I look forward to seeing what happens either way.

It seems to me that this is way to squeeze GWS into agreeing to a favorable trade back to us of two draft picks and possibly  a player for #3.

How does this change things in terms of having additional leverage over GWS WJ?

Well I wanted us to take more risks and that’s what has happened.

Lets see what plays out now.

dvi is meaningless next year as the draft is completely compromised

not only are something like 15 of the current expected top 30-35 (depending on whose assessment you believe) set to be father-son and academy selections, but gc17 have freebies galore in pick 11, and darwin / academy access

Pick 50 this year is neither here nor there but it's a shame to lose the second round pick

Let's say we finish 9th next year, which is where the betting agencies have us approximately finishing. Then we'd start off with pick 10 in the draft. There will probably be about 4 father son and academy picks before then leaving us with about pick 14. For me picks 14 + 26 + 50 is a lot better than pick 8 this year, which will actually be pick 9 after the Greene bid.

I agree, and fairly comfy with losing on points given next years draft is heavily compromised before free agency even gets into it.

a couple more young guns added to our young core i think is the go.

Not really.

I read that as:

- We are willing to part with pick 3, now that we have pick 8.

Hence, traded in a pick to give us both currency at trade table AND still have a top 10 pick.

Surely we're not going to the draft with both picks?

Now is the time to bite the bullet.

Pick 3 + player for Cameron. GWS nabs Greene. Win win.

Giants won't want a player in a trade.

I think clubs must make a minimum of three selections in the draft. With only two picks on our books at present there will be further movement. Exciting times. I trust our guys to get it right.

This point system is garbage

Anything over pick 15-20 is tattslotto

We currently have two picks inside the top 10

For pick 26 and next year first (pick 50 just does not count)

So say we finish 9, meaning pick 9, after academy selection will be more like 15/16

Don't understand how people are complaining about random picks like 26 and 50, which after academy selections this year are more like 28 and 52!

Who is on our NGA or Father son priority list for this and next year.  Do we have someone that we consider a top 8-10 pick in 2020 that we will get priority access to.

We do need an injection of some quality young talent, hopefully we get it right.

Can see us offloading 3 to GWS for 6 and future first round, giving us 6 and 8

Jon Ralph just making it up as he goes.

It's what he does ET.

When we were announcing Goodwin as our coach in waiting, every radio station except SEN was broadcasting it. SEN was too busy having Ralph explain that Goodwin to the Crows as coach was a sure thing. Ralph is a poor man's Ricky Nixon.

This literally looks like the worst trade of picks I have ever seen. We gain pick 8 and hope we beat pick 8 next year by jumping up 7 places (i.e become 10th) just to draw even, THEN throw in a second rounder ? then a third rounder?

Absolutely ridiculous trading. please tell me this is not true,  3 picks for 1. There has to be a v good 2nd rounder pick coming back

Only the meek show no courage.

Love this move, we all want the club to be brave and creative, well here it is! BOOM

Also, somebody on trade radio said north may be looking to bottom out as have been mid table for a while. This may be one way they do that whilst improving their position next year to bounce.

Bold, but I like it especially in light of the academy/father-sons tied up in next year's draft. Plus, maybe it means we're after a late big-ish fish before the trade ends!

Gotta take chances to reap rewards. This might be one of those, and taking it from North makes it even sweeter haha

High price no matter how you spin it.

Need to nail these two selections.

Given our parlous position it's a worthwhile gamble.

Forget next year

If you told me we'd at the least have Tomlinson, Langdon, Pick 3, pick 8...

Yes.

I see what you mean, but that also assumes that the guy available at pick 14 is the one the Club wants. If the FD think that all the good players are gone before that, or are tied to F/S or Academy selections after, they might be looking at the equivalent of pick 25 or so available at 14.

So correct me if I am wrong, but does that mean we currently only have 2 picks in the draft?

good to get another top 10 pick this year but again unless there is some  not yet revealed further strategy we  have been too generous in what we have given back

Yep, we traded 79 in the Langdon deal

Plenty of that going on atm but yes, Ralphy one of the better dart throwers

Why do we have no depth?

Because for years we’ve given up 2nd round picks:

- Vince

- Hibberd

- Melksham

- Oliver/Weid trade ups

- Frost

Our drafts have been all top picks and 3rd round or later from 2012-2016.

The last 2 years we’ve worked our way back in to the 2nd round but without first round picks.

Apart from the fact that the first round pick could go belly up we’ve given up yet another 2nd round pick and the chance of building quality depth in the list.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
