Phantom Drafts

I don't know the players so can't really comment on who we should take at 3.

But I know that the last time an athletic ruck/forward was taken high in the draft was Tom Boyd at No 1!  He won the Bulldogs their premiership off his own boot playing forward and ruck and came within a whisker of winning the Norm Smith.

So I don't feel nervous about taking Jackson at #3.  Not suggesting he will be like Boyd just saying that talented big guys are taken early in the draft.  He could end up a bust or want to be traded 'home' ala Boyd.  But the club will way up the risks in using #3.

Champion Data top Mock draft is:  https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl-mock-draft-2019-champion-data-rankings-pick-1-prospects-matt-rowell-tom-green-noah-anderson/news-story/e8b5be824b0695bda92ce6a7869dd570

  • 1. MATTHEW ROWELL
  • 2. THOMAS GREEN
  • 3. NOAH ANDERSON
  • 4. LUKE JACKSON
  • 5. HAYDEN YOUNG
  • 6. CALEB SERONG
  • 7. SAM FLANDERS
  • 8. LACHLAN ASH
  • 9. DEVEN ROBERTSON
  • 10. WILL GOULD

Interestingly, Green is ranked as 2nd best.  Surely, we must bid for him at 3?  Are we afraid GWS won't match?

I see no risk in bidding for him - we either get one of the top 3 draftees (Green) or we select the player we would otherwise have chosen currently predicted to be Jackson.

We must nail pick 3 and if Green is best available we go for him!

Green reminds me a little of how Chunk played mid field the last 3 seasons or so.

Bid on Henry with pick 3 and put Freo in a very awkward place as they will then need to make a call on Henry or Jackson and more than likely won't get both which they might if we don't bid.

We don't need Green if GWS end up not countering.  We DO need Henry however and imho he will be a cracker and worth every cent of pick 3 when we look back in 5 years.

There is no Lochie Whitfield in the top 3- 5. That would be great. We can do with another excellent outside Mid.

Tom Green is looking superb. But we have plenty of inside Mids.

Hadyn Young? Even if he was another Basher Houli its a lot to spend on HBF.

Luke Jackson? How many very good talls have we got from Centre to FWD? 2 - TMac and Gawny. It just makes sense to take Jackson even if Weid, Pruess and Bradtke come suddenly very good. Luke says he is ready to play Round one. His highlights are very good. Left and right foot, great groundskills and solid pack marks. 12 year player probably. I dont see whats not to like.

The guy who nearly won (and some scribes said should have won) the NS in Tiges' premiership?

Having said that i would liken Ash or Gould (not in height obviously) more closely to Houli than say Young in terms of the manner in which they play and distribute the pill.

3. Young - Melbourne

4. Jackson - Giants

5. Flanders - Swans

6. GWS - Green - Crows Bid.

7. Stephens - Crows

8. Robertson - Dockers

9. Serong - Melbourne

10. Ash - Blues

I'm going to have a stab at the 1st round, including possible pick swaps.   This is highly uneducated and largely guess work with some help from reading various phantom drafts and tidbits about who clubs are looking at.  Pick swapping adds a whole new dimension and difficulty to predicting how this will unfold.

Some points that affect my phantom draft order

  • Nil bid on Green by Melbourne at 3 allowing GWS to have a selection before he gets bid on.
  • Melbourne trading pick 9 to port for Pick 13 and 19.
  • Carlton Bidding on Henry at pick 10

  1. Matt Rowell (GC)
  2. Noah Anderson (GC)
  3. Luke Jackson (MELB)
  4. Lachie Ash (GWS)
  5. Tom Green (GWS - matching Sydney bid)
  6. Hayden Young (SYD)
  7. Fischer McAsey (ADE)
  8. Sam Flanders (FRE)
  9. Dylan Stephens (PORT)
  10. Liam Henry (FRE - matching Carlton bid)
  11. Caleb Serong (CAR)
  12. Deven Robertson (HAW)
  13. Brodie Kemp (MELB)
  14. Miles Bergam (WB)
  15. Josh Worrell (GEEL)
  16. Trent Bianco (GC)
  17. Will Day (PORT)
  18. Jay Rantall (GEEL)
  19. Cody Weightman (MELB)
  20. Trent Rivers (RICH)

I've read a lot on here over the past few weeks. Looked at various highlights reels. Read various phantom drafts. I've realised I'm clueless.  In Taylor and team I trust. they know all the players like I don't. Going to be a fun draft night. Do they keep picks, do they trade picks, who do they pick. Do they gamble and win on some trades. Do they gamble and lose. We'll know in a week and an hour unless some picks swaps happen before Friday's deadline.

That would be a dream result. I doubt Port will swap us those picks for 8 though, and I bet we draft Weightman with the earlier pick, just to make sure we get him. Also wouldn’t be surprised if Kemp was gone by then. I like it though.

I think GWS have moved up thinking Jackson will be there we would crazy not to bid for Green. Young is what we need Jackson less so. I would prefer us to trade with Freo.

Can we just assume that if we take Jackson with what could be the first live pick, it is because we think he is special. Young is probably a safe pick,

I was wondering why we draft a young ruck but it's now getting a bit of the Oliver feel about it.

We could have taken the safe option in Parish, and he is going to be a good player but Oliver is the star.

If we do it again...great.

Have to trust we get this one right if we take Jackson over the safe pick in Young.

I was chatting to a friend who supports Carlton and he was saying they're quite keen on Serong at pick 9. he said though there is pretty strong word that there may be some behavior/attitude concerns with him which is why he may slide a little bit, has anyone else heard this?

Agreed 100%.

I've found in the past, I've always been keen on the flashy mid/fwd player early, (Bontempelli, Stringer, etc.) but my favourite player is the hardworking back pocket/inside mid (Jetta, Viney, Oliver).

In Taylor we trust. That's why he gets paid via those huge novelty checks.

What's people's view about Green v Young. I have read some opinions that Green is right up there with the first 2 and then there's a drop off to anyone else. Would Green therefore be a better option than Young or Jackson even though he's an inside mid.

The Hun have us trading pick 9 (adjusted after Green bid by Sydney has been match) and GWS going with Ash ahead of Young, who slides to Freo's pick at 8.

If that's where things are trending, then we have an interesting pool of teams who may be willing to move up, but not really sure which players in particular will generate the interest. Kemp, Bergman (who Gold Coast do like, linked with the Dogs at 13/14) or Serong may be around the mark if Adelaide go for McAsey at 7.

Think it’s all on-field stuff. Can get caught up in the heat of the moment and lose his cool giving away frees and 50 metre penalties.

Don’t think there’s any off-field issues though.

Whilst I’m happy with the additions of Langdon and Tomlinson are we so naive to think we’re out of the woods now with our ball movement?

Young and Ash for me.

Would be a huge double addition.  Don't mind it at all BA.  Ash is going to be as good as Young in his own way imv.

Having said that i would seriously consider putting a bid in on Green with 3 and make sure GWS are forced to a decision.  If we land him and miss Young then Ash might be an option with 8.  It's a no brainer win win move i reckon.

Green & Ash are both super gets from this draft pool and were both in the top 7/8 players over the carnival from what i watched.

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to
