I am of an age where I have more well trodden path behind me than open road in front of me. My age may go some way towards my attitude toward the modern day use of some words now employed in footy circles.

There are two in particular that annoy me.

"Craft" - as in "Preuss to work on forward craft." When I was growing up footballers had skills. There was an art to how the position were played. Referring to something as a craft, to me removes art from a player. Removes the imagination that players require. We have all seen players do something otherworldly that is in no way a 'craft'. I would love this word banished from the MFC coaching panel and replaced with discussion about skills and imagination.

"Learnings" - They are lessons FFS.

Thank you for reading. I am sure there are other things in the same vein that annoy people.

Slow news Friday?

Mr. Hell, I did title it 'Minor'... It is just something that has been irritating me for a while.

It is societal symptom.

Politicians, celebs, almost anyone making comments fill sentences full of jargon words and phrases. The old fashioned word was gobbledygook.

You do not talk to anyone these days, you have a conversation and on and on it goes.

Not as bad as hearing people saying that "things are hotting up" or "he come into the club".

Try being in the older brigade.

We've had to sit through the introduction of

The Fat Side

Great Dukes

Rats Tossbag

And any number of other sayings invented by barely literate footy jocks.

If you are tuning in to a fooball telecast for intellectual stimulation, you've come to the wrong place.

....at the end of the day.

"Going forward".   (As time and life always do;  they never go backwards or stand still)

"Forward planning".   (Same principle ... very challenging to plan in reverse)

Any coincidence being referred to as 'ironic'.

Narrative - I swear I barely heard that word 3 years ago!

An oldy but a goody - Laconic. Makes my blood boil. I don't give a toss that the meaning of words might change over time. It's just annoying that it changes from misuse. Jack Watts is not laconic, Jeff Garlett is! Look up the meaning Huddo, DerWayne etc etc

De Fence.

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Shot on (not at) goal - a straight lift from soccer intended to make the person speaking sound more worldly and intelligent. Only used by  dummies.

Offence (not forward) - straight lift from basketball  (the only sport where deliberate fouls in the last seconds are considered both good play and good form) for the same reasons as above. Only used by dummies.

Left to right, right to left - describing the movement of the ball when kicking at goal - its like listening to cricket commentators talk about swing or movement off the seam. Yet to be observed by sentient viewers. Thankfully mainly used only by one of the biggest dummies in town.

Minor premiership - straight pinch from rugby league for the same reasons as above to offer some kudos to the team that finishes on top of the ladder. Who has ever cared about who finished on top, only flags count. Makes dummies look dumber, not smarter.

Off season - straight take from any foreign sport. In footy there is never an "off season" as we live it all year round, just don't get to watch much between October and March.

Lastly the ugliest of all - it's the ladder, never a table. Straight pinch from English soccer for those want to sound more worldly and intelligent. Only used by phony, pretentiou,s self serving, so-called sophisticates. Really only dumb, dumberr and dumbest. Those who use this offensive term should be required to wash their mouths out with soap and disinfectant and voluntarily remove themselves from the footy world until they have served a long period of contrition, penitence and repentance and sought forgiveness and reinstatement to footy society.

We have lost our pride and belief in the superiority of our footy. All other alien and inferior sports should be ignored and disregarded. Footy is good, better and the best sport ever invented by man (or God). Leave it alone.

Top 5 right there.  And straight from the mouth of our own Goody.

I REALLY hate Rats tossbag though. (and Fat Side)

"He brings the ball to ground".

Like gravity yeah?

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
