Why do we seem to miss the scrutiny from the media?

Is it because we are still an insignificant club & can’t be trusted & no one cares.

We have been woeful, from a preliminary final to second bottom must be one of the biggest falls from grace in the history of the AFL yet it’s “Oh yeah that’s  Melbourne move on”

Nearly every  expert tipped us top 4, so it’s totally unexpected yet unexplainable, but it’s just zero care factor from everyone

Could you imagine the uproar if it was Collingwood or Richmond & why does Goodwin & the players seem to get away scot free?

Apart from Melbourne Supporters, everyone else laughs at how useless this club is...

We were useless in the ‘70’s when i was at school. To the outsider absolutely nothing has changed....

I was asked this the other day, I think the heat is slowly being turned up with some of the recent comments from commentators etc.

We can send thanks to the Saints, Carlton & Norf as those coaches had targets on there back coming into the year.

As finals are around the corner this will allow us to slip off with very little scrutiny but Goodwin will have a massive target on his back come round 1. if we are 0-2 it will spell then enough of Simon "Talking points" Goodwin

Last years result gave us a grace period because the media has such a short memory. That one (relatively)good year gave us the breathing space not given to teams who were poor last year and didnt improve. We made a Prelim and went backwards with mitigating circumstances.

Dont worry though, our time is coming unless we start winning and doing it repeatedly.

Next year the media will be lobbying for Goodwins scalp if our early season is a repeat of this year.

The heat is coming and it will be intensified over the off season all the way to the build up of 2020. Sadly, a club that has not had any success since the mid 19th Century, people rightly equate us with being a disaster of a club that neither offends people or is worth defending. You only a threat when  you win.

'Billy', we haven't got off scott free.

We've certainly copped a serve.

....but a few things.

3 clubs have sacked/retired/whatever their coaches...so this is always going to take precedence.

It is now at the serious stage of the season and unless anything major happens at a club not featuring or likely to feature in finals the     closer it gets to September the less a club will be covered.

You can expect us to get a bit more coverage in the off season. The what went wrong articles will start to appear after the premiership race is over.

...and 'Dee Watcher' is thinking the same. Just posted before I finished this. Agree...

Making an informed & educated evaluation of how this year has panned out I think you can come to the conclusion that this year has been a big bleep in our development.

We have been slowly but surely building a winning culture at the club with continued growth for 5+ years. I simply don't buy into this is who were are and where we belong given we really have been pushing for finals for the last 2-3 years with a VERY young list.

Having a record amount of off season surgeries is not an ideal way to start pre season. Only being able to get 12 players on the park for a session at the start of the year should also be cause for concern and indicates how underdone or players were.

Also being a young team we very much rely on confidence to get us through games, our confidence was absolutely shot by round 3 this year and there probably wasn't much hope in turning it around from there, especially with the injuries we were facing, just go back and look at how our backline lined up in the first few rounds.

I think the media really has given us a bit of a mulligan this year, given its clear our list is talented and even though our season is shot we have not dropped our heads and are getting ourselves into winning positions weekly.

However, 2020 there can be absolutely no excuses.

We will be starting our pre season early, our list is beginning to look healthy again. We will also be "blessed" with a top 5 pick that we would not have been planning for or expecting. This pick will get more elite talent through the doors or could be traded for more ready made players to help us make a push back to September next year.

As a previous poster mentioned, if we start next year 0-2 the pressure and media slagging will come down on the club and Goodwin like a brick [censored] house.

Cause it's nothing new.
Melbourne the basketcase has self destructed and find themselves at the bottom of the ladder again.
Situation normal.
And no-one but their small band of tortured supporters GAF.

Add Champion Data to that list. They rated our list as No. 1.

Must be the same experts that were tipping the Federal Election result.

Champion Data ought to be embarrassed by that ranking. The second worst side in the league getting ranked 1st.

Got a feeling we'll get skinned alive by the media if we lose this week and rightly so. And a few assistant coaches fates will be sealed as well.

Losing to St Kilda twice in the one year would be a disgrace and an embarrassment.

We were hyped up all pre season. The scrutiny didn't really appear until after the Brisbane loss but there's been heaps of coverage in the past month. What do you expect?

I trust a loss this week will up the pressure gauge. If we don't win again for the year then the media will be licking it lips for the first month of 2020. They'll have Goodwin in their sights. That will be there regardless but if we can notch 8-9 wins for the year it'll be a solid end to the year. And it would give Goodwin an extra month.

If he goes 0-7 to end the season, he'll be first on the inevitable "coaches under most pressure" lists.

Media and bookies seem to be of the general consensus that we're better than our record suggests. We were as short as $2.10 against the Eagles last week. The Saints were further odds out against the Bulldogs. It's been the same each week.

That said the sharks will be circling if we lose this week.

There's just no interesting story here, at least from the outside. The injury/interrupted preseason thing got out really early and we were out of finals contention by round 8, and everyone just kinda said injuries were the problem. Everyone knows Goodwin is safe, and rightly or wrongly most will expect us to bounce back in 2020.

On top of that there haven't been many recent surprises. Our 5 loses in the last 2 months: Adelaide by a kick, Collingwood (top 4), Brisbane at the Gabba, Dogs at marvel and West Coast (reining premiers). With the possible exception being the Dogs, nobody would have given us a chance in any of them. Wins against Freo and Carlton have kept the sharks at bay, as would a win tomorrow against the saints, lose that and there will be blood in the water.

Carey, Ricuito, Watson and others are all pals of Goodwin, as a result he completely escapes criticim. Roos also has reasons not to bag him. Rules a lot out. Leaves Dermie and a few others - who rightfully havent missed us. We are a joke.

Less scrutiny because:

  • Our story makes some sense.  Goody keeps things fairly level and doesn’t expose himself too much.
  • We don’t have 70,000 rabid members that buy copies of the Herald Sun to read the latest story
  • More rope - we are not at the point where the story will break the thing open.
  • The big stories are in the big clubs - the coaches going, Pies on the slide, resurgent Tiggers, Brisbane on the charge....etc.

Happy to be under the radar, get an easy draw and a high draft pick to set things to rights in 2020.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
