Petracca's set shot kicking

dee-tox

Recommended Posts

For the umpteenth time Petracca missed a set shot from 25 metres in the last that could have set the team up for a win. Sure Fritsch and May also missed gettable shots but the are not serial offenders.

Anyone that has played a decent amount of footy knows that Petracca's ball drop is way too high and causes him to generally to slew to the right. This is something that should have been ironed out in juniors. But why in a professional environment has it been allowed to continue?

Even without coaching, why hasn't he fixed it himself?

Yawn...

...of all the things in the game to pick on - it is a kick from a player who was one of our best today and has been most of the year.

This thread is just another excuse to get stuck into a player some people don't like.  It has become embarrassing.

He wears our beloved red and blue and works his heart out every week.  Give him a break.

Trac is deflating full stop. Trade him now while we still can.

I think Petracca has been really good the past couple of weeks. Trade him for what exactly? We would get a first rounder that most likely wouldnt amiunt to anything. Petracca will be a star, he is one of the very few on our list that we should consider trading.

Trac’s getting better every week, including his set shots. He was one of our best players and managed to break through Bulldogs players on numerous occasions. Instead of blaming him for the loss, praise him for assisting with keeping us in the game.

Kicks a goal from 25 out directly in front, we're more than in the game.

Not disputing he played reasonably well. The point is he misses sitters every game because of a horrendous technique. I expect more as most supporters do.

Blind Freddie can see his ball drop is too high. Why TF can't someopne at the club do something about it?

Probably the same reason they can stop idiot mids blindly handballing to opposition players or at our players feet. Or bombing the bal on our fwds heads. Or not kicking in until the opposition has set up their defence completely.

The coaching staff have a lot to answer for in this pathetic year of football. Goodwin cant coach.

Petracca's field kicking has improved a lot in the last two months and his set shots now come with a routine. Not a particularly good one - he loses momentum and comes in too slowly, probably working on getting a good ball drop too much. His best kicks come when he has good momentum as well as balance and a nice ball drop.

They worked on Petracca's ball drop over summer. They are clearly working on his goal kicking routine. Hopefully a goal kicking coach is on the way and I like many others want a dedicated kicking coach or a dedicated kicking program at least, which they may have.

Finally I leave you with this:

Marcus Bontempelli is the best field kick in the game with a wonderful action. He's also a terrible kick for goal. It's not easy!

about time some of our players took it upon themselves to improve. As a basketballer Petracca knows about practice, practice practice when going for goal. Stuff the fitness blokes, its your career. Goodwin will not get another senior job when it all ends in tears.

Just another one we agree on.

I'm over this 'trade Petracca' rubbish. Yes, his set shots have been poor this year, but outside of maybe Hunt, that's true of the entire team. However, Tracy's had a really strong year as a forward in a team that has absolutely no idea how to use the ball.

The team crying out for explosiveness, class, and creativity, and half the people on here want to trade one of maybe 4 players that actually possess the talents that win football games. Unreal.

Name all the games he has won for us.........

Most over rated player in the comp and has been for years.

Until Trac can run out a full game his trade bait for me. Any close game he is nowhere to be seen in the 4th. Real indictment on Misson being unable to get Tracs fitness up enough for a full standard game of AFL.

Seems reasonable commentary that has been consistently made. I am not an expert in kicking technique but have seen this comment made not only about Trac who I agree has been one of our best and who I think could become one of our and the games greats. However his regular missing of what appear easy shots not only mar his game but also affects the confidence of the whole team. I think we have all seen how taking these opportunities lift the whole team.

i just ask is there anything being done to address this problem, or to provide a response that shows it is not a factor.

you put a guy that cant kick in front of the goals and of course he's going to miss.  it's really the coaches fault for playing him there. he should be nowhere near forward 50m and I've said this all year.

Ball drop is too high but he also doesn't kick through the ball. He's an accurate shot from 45-50 but 25-30 he's all at sea. It's the Matty Richardson/Trav Cloke/Levi Casboult curse

I love Trac but to ignore his woeful set shot record for goal from about 40 metres out  or closer is unacceptable.

The opinion is spot on and the Coaches and Trac are in delegation of duty on this one.

After Maroochydore I asked ( very wrongly) after training when Trac was high fiving and signing autographs how his kicking for goal was going.

He abruptly said "how do you think it's going" so clearly he has a phobia or is well aware.

But the fact is it has not improved this season so when is it going to?

Trac is best at half forward and needs to improve his goal kicking as a priority.

He is a keeper and can be a 30-40 goal a year player definitely.

His burst into the midfield through a game will be just a burst.  I don’t see him as a permanent mid.  His aerobic fitness doesn’t fit the modern game where 15kms is covered by some of the mids.

I really cannot believe I am mentioning this, but watching the show Bob tonight with Fev, he discussed kicking coaching and Ross Lyon simplified Fevs kicking action.  Fev was a complete idiot but he was an amazing set shot, his larrikin attitude that has matured might be a good pairing to work on Tracs set shots.  Fev spoke about playing forward similar to playing chess (yes you did read that correctly) knew when to be in the right spots through training drills.

I have liked many of your posts but sometimes l have scratched my head with you being ruthless with a player because he does not satisfy your liking for the way he plays. I don't think you mean it sometimes.

He has his faults but his football this year has been more consistent without hitting the scoreboard with the so called goals. Petrac has held his own and is well entrenched in our best 22. IMO he will get better and if traded what makes you so sure the he will be the equal or better. The chances are they  won't be better.

And for the kids sake he Petrac probably needs a break or rest like some we are carrying at the minute. He can play better footy because he has the potential however depends what  you and others think what his best footy looks like.

At the Family Day earlier this year I overheard someone mention to Trac something about his goal kicking action and he did not take it very well. He positively bristled. I got the impression it was a sensitive issue and he does not take on advice well. Some players need to be handled differently. If someone like Fev, who always acted a bit arrogantly and as a know all, was able to heed advice and be open to coaching in order to be a better goal kicker is surprising, but shows there is hope for any player. They only need to find the right person to get through to Trac to help him maybe? It could be lack of confidence or stubbornness holding him back.

I heard some commentators ( I can't remember who) discussing his routine for set shots on goals. They noticed he had a different routine every time, as though he was always trying different things. He hasn't yet found one that is successful for him. If he does, surely confidence in himself that he can do it (kick the goal) will fall into place? There must be a solution, and it seems it is in coaching.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
