End of last year, Gus had a back problem which prevented him from doing much pre Xmas training and the traditional family Xmas day 100 x 100 with his brothers.  Can't recall the exact time but it he didn't start preseason training until sometime in January. 

Back problems can come and go so wouldn't be surprised if that is the issue.  It could also be why he is not in the middle - to protect his back from the rough and tumble of congested football.  He is slow and struggles to get low to pick up the ball - also signs it could be a back issue.

He looks tired but not disinterested.  EOS can't come quick enough for the many that are battered and bruised in our team.

    That would explain his performance, but for mine, doesn't explain why he's being picked every game. Pack him off and get him right. Just another indictment on our management if that's the case.

    Imo Brayshaw has been played out of position which could be why he is down on form. 

    I DONT WANT TO TRADE HIM. 

    Lets play him in his correct position. 

    Mark my words if we trade him he will excel at his new club and we will regret it. 

    Also maybe the coach needs to change or alter his game plan.

    Is a half fit Brayshaw better than the options at Casey?

    Is a half fit Hannan/Jetta/Lever better than the options at Casey? 

    We have Dunkley and Lockhart playing seniors. We have a 19 year old who has played 7 games in the backline, as our FF. Would they be playing in a "normal season"

    Casey had the following players from our list this week:  Bradtke, Chandler, Jordon, Bedford.  None have played AFL,  Jordon had 17 touches the others single digits.  Would you put these players in a side playing West Coast this week?  They may get their chance in the last couple of games, not 6 rounds out. Those players need development, not a beating like was handed out to Petty last year.  We have learnt the lesson.

    Others who may be in contention: Maynard (25),  JKH(31), Baker (26).  Maynard ( 1 AFL game) may be able to play in the middle but is he better than the half fit Brayshaw at the moment?  The others aren't mids, and Baker was sent back in order to manage his load after playing a couple of senior games.

    If those were to come into the side it would probably be to replace the likes of Dunkley, Lockhart, ANB, Hannan....

    Good post, team availability is often overlooked by those who want to throw the baby out with the bathwater after every loss. As mentioned, in no way should Bradtke, Jordon or Bedford play senior footy this year, yes Jordon has been improving but he'll improve more at the lower level than at AFL IMO. Therefore who else could be put up? JHK, his papers appear to be stamped. Baker - looked good, and will get more opportunity but looked tired when he was dropped, it happens to younger players. Maynard - no, he's a pure inside mid. Wagners - Josh can only play back and is depth at most, while Corey looks good at VFL he hasn't shown anywhere near that at the top level. 

    So playing Brayshaw below his best is probably the better option, it wouldn't surprise me if he is one of the first to be sent off for surgery/early season rest, but maybe the only way he gets back into gear is by continuing to play, and we know he's been crudely knocked out at Casey before so better to run him in in the 1s.

    Sorry George, I'm not sold on this outlook given Brayshaw has been out of form the whole season. Sure, maybe 1 or 2 weeks you could argue we stick with him as he's a better option (in your opinion) than what's at Casey, but continuing to pick a massively underperforming player while ignoring consistent performances at VFL level is undermining the culture Roos strived to build and destroying any kind of concept of competition for spots.

    It's been 17 rounds and Brayshaw hasn't turned his form around. Exactly how many weeks does he get based on his draft order in your system of selection?

    Should be the first of a few players to be put in the rack to ensure he's ready for pre-season training - 9:00am day one.

    I hope from a footballing point of view that he's injured as that can somehow excuse what a horrid season he's having.

    Ignores the reality that he was absolutely butchering the ball AND was a defensive liability.

    He played a mix of wing, forward and on ball against the Dockers and did mostly pretty well.

    The foss Lewis is tagging. Harmes is on the wing saving his legs and shoulders for next year. Viney is on ball. Oliver is on ball and forward. Fritsch is on the wing or forward if we have no forward options, Hunt vice versa. Petracca is forward and on ball. 

    That leaves Gus playing a mix of forward, on ball and wing. He’s perfectly capable of doing all of that. He did it as a 19 year old in year 1. Put his game on the weekend down to copping a corky. Otherwise he just has to play better.

    I wouldn't trade Gus. Get his body right and challenge him to really improve his defensive game in 2020 and beyond.

    Do not trade Brayshaw. As many have already said, just play him in the position he's built for.

    But that's kind of the point, we have so many in that position that he's not playing there. So why not consider trading him for someone who can actually play that position (outside mid) well?

    NO, we have put a lot of development into him plus we have seen what he is capable of when he is right

    It’s a furphy that we’ve got too many inside midfielders. We’ve got exactly the right amount and should hold dearly onto Gus.

    It is more accurate to say we don’t have enough outside midfielders. Robbing Peter to pay Paul would be totally counterproductive in this instance.

      There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
