What’s his tally now. 2.14!!! 16 shots …he spins the ball endlessly then sways it left to right and left and right Then his hook which is now systemic

Goalkicking is shout straight levers and minimal fluctuations!!! How it fix it? Biomechanics Confidence Practice

This thread is so depressing 😔

I know Dr. Gonzo my grandson was looking at me strangely when I approached the TV on Sunday and yelled aim for the bloody right hand goal post Max it’s not that hard but no Max knows best. Later everyone was saying get Petty down back and he takes a great mark 35m out and I yelled that’s why he is playing forward, my middle daughter said he hasn’t kicked it yet, bang another point, so grandad what about Petty. lol. I sat down and shut up.!!!

I hear ya! When Sparrow marked Tracs miskick first thing I said to my son was "why is he going so far back? He is a couple of metres from the goal line just needs to step out and pop it through" then after the inevitable miss "why did he try and kick the skin off it!!!"

We are all traumatised by this club haha

Max could be on the AAMI ad “I’ll see you at the footy” where the girl says “shanked it”. Perfect person.

He’s a putrid kick for a professional footballer with access to the best coaches in the land.

Surely he could hire someone privately to fix his technique?

Or is it “nothing to see here”, put fingers in my ears?

He also walks directly toward the right point post. It’s amateurish, walk straight toward the target, hold the ball steady and kick through it. It ain’t that hard particularly from 30m

The only reason he made that epic goal after the siren against Geelong in 2021 was because he was forced to walk in straight and kick over the mark. The ball sailed elegantly straight through the middle of the goals.

Many times I have made this suggestion that I believe will cure his problems forever.

He kicks a left hand hook shot. Not much but just enough to miss from straight in front.

Maxie should be encouraged to skip to the left before the run in and run in at a slight angle to straight.

The hook kick will then sail through the big sticks.

Easy. Just do it.

If he did that the maggot would call “play on”.

Still, even that couldn’t be worse. He may have to handball it off.

This.

Max is an absolute star, but he should be deadset embarrassed by the lack of progress he has made with his goal kicking. It is an indictment on both him and the coaching staff.

Agreed, i dont expect a big lanky ruck to kick 'em all the time, but 2.14 is woeful. Previously when he took a mark in the F50 you'd be like this could be anything, but this season you could say it'd be a point with confidence.

Look I wonder if the media don't really go as hard because it's max. Lets face it, he is much loved by the media & by opposition supporters

It started off being funny when he missed but it's now becoming seriously frustrating.

He's our captain. I mean you see danger step up & rarely miss, the bont is reliable and Toby as well.

I know max is different because he has to play ruck & we all know how good he is around the ground but max just kick the goal.

He's spoken about his routine but it rarely works

Perhaps give up on improving his technique and just tell him to aim to the right of the goals.

he should try kicking left footed. Can't be any worse.

Nope - i mentioned a while back that its like a golfer trying to fix a slice by aiming more left. It actually will make it worse. The further right Max aims, the more subconsciously his body will compensate and kick across the ball hooking it left. The cure is straight lines. Aim straight, walk straight, release straight.

Gawn is probably totally stuffed from his work around the ground when he lines up for goal. He does more work than our total forward line combined.

Hey, Roy Boy, you made one mistake in your statement. Quote "The best coaches in the land" Unquote. If we had the best coaches in the land our skills would be at AFL level not a suburban club.

yes, but the cure hasn't worked to date and it looks like it never will. Aiming right can't cause a worse result (OOB is often better than a point), and who knows, maybe Max's subconcious works differently than others. Worth a try at least.

He already does aim right. Watch him next time, he was actually walking towards the right behind post. If he was spraying it all over the place, sure there maybe something in it. But he is missing everything left. Everything. This is 100% correctable and he needs to just fix the run up and release. It may not change overnight, but commitment to the process was at least improve it from 2.12 to something a little more respectable.

Place kick is probably still legal, eliminates the drop of the ball. Set up time may be an issue.

sorry to be pedantic, but if he already aims to the right as you say, but misses to the left, then I suggest aiming even more to the right. There seems no hope that he will improve his ball drop etc.

(Though I did recently see one attempt at goal where he kept the ball low and fast, rather than belting the cover off it. Still missed, but at least it didn't give me time for my usual groan.)

Max has been missing his drop punt kicks at goal for years now. That will now never improve. Time to try the Peter Hudson flat punt when kicking for goal. More of the ball strikes the boot at the one time, much more than the drop punt - therefore less margin for error. Worth a shot - PH did ok using it.

Virtually from the goal square no less - shanks nearly all his kicks left & has learnt nothing since costing us the Geelong game last year.

In an era when most aspects of player training & development are monitored & measured to within a millimetre of their life why on earth don't we put some resources into improving players kicking.

Can't we get maybe Brad Green, Yze, Garry Lyon, Neita all of whom were great kicks to spend some time with the likes of Max, Fritsch, Trac, Tim Smith & Hunt to improve their kicking.

Develop a routine, consistent ball drop, where to aim and when passing to a team mate learn to hit him on the chest not a metre above the head.

Is all this too obvious or what ?

Have given him a new nickname...

RAVI

Hold ball straight, drop ball straight

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
