Just a question , but what the hell has happened to Braydon Preuss? He seems to have dropped off the planet , not injured, just seems to be a non person left in limbo....

Preuss is our backup 1st ruck (as opposed to our 2nd ruckman). We have the best 1st ruck in the competition. Question answered I'd say.

On a completely unrelated note, man our forward line sucks. I wish we had some more tall timber on our list.

Don't see how you think that is unrelated. Preuss played brilliantly up in Sydney in the forward line. He's exactly the crash and bash tall timber we are missing in the forward line. It's a mystery to me. The whole forward line structure looked the best it has all year when he played before he got injured.

The way I relate the signing is I follow the NFL & over there they sign back up Quarterbacks to lucrative deals for the sole reason to be a backup incase of injury. These blokes don't even play reserves, literally just practice each week in the event they may be needed. Seems Preuss is exactly that at the moment

It tells me: Two different but obstinate game plans with two different but obstinate coaches. It is almost as if he is not receiving one-on-one coach to player communication, practices, training routines. Unjustifiably negligent; he could be turned into such an asset whilst awaiting back-up, in-game ruck duties to relieve Gawn's massive workload. As a rugby player, albeit a modest one, he is used to physical exertion and the argy-bargy rough stuff, as well.

To counter your argument, Preuss was also involved in our worst and most gutless performance of the year Vs St Kida. That was the game where basically every one of our inside 50’s that wasn’t marked by one of our forwards was automatically rebounded by St Kilda.

The worst display of inside 50 ball retention I’ve witnessed from an MFC side, and clearly Preuss was one of the main reasons for that.

The game Preuss played against Sydney was better than anything either Weideman or TMac have produced all year. Must play against Collingwood on Monday.

Much as I would like it to happen I don’t think it will, on TMacs form though he has to be in the gun now. It wouldn’t shock me if he’s carrying something because all the athleticism he had last year which made him a good player seems non existent right now. 

Max is in fantastic form right now but I would like to see Pruess come in for Smith. We get horribly beaten in the ruck when Max is off the ground.

To counter that argument. They made him play when he couldn't lift his arm above his chest. Bizarre decision. Was an incredibly gutsy effort to be out there at all. Looks like they damned him for it too. What were they thinking? Almost as bad as what they did to J Smith.

That shoulder hit he took against the Swans the week before looked nasty AF. Then they put him in the team the following week, in a position where it’s more crucial than other positions to lift your arms above the chest, despite the fact he obviously couldn’t. Any criticism of his performance against the Saints should heavily factor this in.

Pruess for T-mac weeks ago was a no brainer.  Might have won us the game up north also.

Heads our goal kicking averages while Tommy is down to less than 1 a game.

Pruess ranked equal 9th in AFL goal kicking averages alongside Ablett, Franklin, Betts and Fantasia but can't crack a call up.

Another Goody fail.  What a shitty year this is turning out to be.

I don’t reckon he is far off a recall but his Casey form has been average.

Personally, I think he should come in as a way to ease the load on Gawn a bit each game, since it isn't really practical to rest big Max outright.

Even if Preuss is only barely adequate in the role, it is worth it if Gawn getting a slightly easier run at it for half a season in 2019 means he is a bit fresher and, for want of a better word, younger, in years to come.

Plus, it might just be that what Preuss needs most is a good run at AFL level. At least nobody will be left wondering what the real options are for 2020. If he goes well, then good, if he doesn't, then now we know.

My reading of the Preuss situation is thus:

Max Gawn is Melbourne’s #1 ruckman. He is contracted until the end of 2021 at which time he will be 30 years old. Many factors will determine what happens with Max at the end of 2021 but you might assume he will get another contract that takes into account how many more years his body can handle rucking and whether we have a spot for him to rest forward etc.

Braydon Preuss is Melbourne’s #2 ruckman. He is contracted until 2021 at which time he will be approximately 26 years old. Many factors will determine what happens with Braydon at the end of 2021 but you might assume that he would now have 3 years of training with and learning from the premier ruckman in the AFL under his belt. If he has learned well from Max he might get another contract with Melbourne.  Or he will be able to seek a trade to another club that needs a ruckman (and there is always one or two that do), and he will probably do well out of it having done his apprenticeship under Max and at 26 will still have a few years of football left to make his own mark. 

I’m thinking there is a long term approach to this with both Melbourne and Preuss benefiting.

We get a backup ruck for the next 3 years and at the end we either have a ruck to take over from Max or an easily tradeable ruck commodity. 

If he gets a few senior games rucking or in the forward line in the meantime then that’s a plus for him.
