Said it last week and I'll say it again Billy Stretch is not AFL standard just butchers the ball . Turnover King

Goal kicking at training please

All varieties of goal set ups please Goodwin

i am sick of winning all the stats except THE MAIN ONE

Should’ve won it. It’s that simple. Shameful umpiring yes but we were our own worst enemy. Dominated the game bar where it matters most.

Don’t want to hang one guy but Petracca’s skill errors tonight were really basic, and they were costly. He needs to work on it if he is serious about this AFL thing.

Eddie McGuire is filthy on the non decision on the dangerous tackle on Smith.

fritch and salem both turned the ball over. i liked frost and oscar both did pretty well. shame our forwards cannot kick straight, or mark, or tackle, or chase, or handball

Frost did a massive Frosty at the end, so I reckon it’s rough to point out the mistakes of others in the same sentence of praising Frost.

And anyway, there are a million mistakes made in a game of footy.

I thought Baker had a great debut. Pity for him that he didn’t kick that goal in the 2nd. I was nervous for Petty after his debut but thought he had a good game also. Bit to like with those two. Hopefully this performance spurs them both on.

Stretch and petracca are just [censored] dumb and not natural footballers. Stretch should play table tennis. Petracca should play basketball because he doesnt dispose the ball below his shoulders

Big night for the eagles and the umps tonight...

Finals are officially gone.

Don't blame the umpires. We shot ourselves in the foot because we struggle to kick set shot goals from 20m directly in front (Looking at you trac)

Fritsch is a putrid footballer down back! Butchers the footy which just resulted in goals.

That was Nathan Jones worst game ever! [censored] putrid!!

Well said. Fritsch really coughs it up in traffic and Nathan Jones is too slow to react to play as inside mid now.

How many chances can we possibly let slip?

Tracc struggles to kick a simple goal, take a sitter mark or kick to advantage. His 2 goals shouldve been 5 or 6. Very wasteful player with the worst ball drop since Curly Austen

David King just said there will be a lot of anger against the umpires by the Dees and virtually insinuated they robbed us completely.

Umpires are a disgrace and never play Stretch again.  Turned it over 8 times tonight

We're certainly playing alot better but goal kicking let us down as well as composure in the fourth.

Delivery into 50 played into their hands especially in the last quarter and a half, but execution inside 50 and goalkicking was and continues to be just appalling.

Memo to Mr Goodwin: training this week for the miss and half backs must be lowering the eyes kicking into 50, and for the forwards bloody set shots. Don’t care about anything else.  It has cost us tonight’s game and others and cost us any chance of finals again.

I've only seen the second half and that was clearly the best football we've played all year.

We lost this game because we dominated the third quarter but barely scored.

We were playing top 4 football at times, other than in respect of shots on goal. We were tough at the contest, quick on the spread, we hit targets by foot, we had players leading up at the ball, but when we needed to kick the goal we missed or fluffed the mark or didn't make the distance or dropped a soda of a mark.

We should have been 5+ goals up at three quarter time, not 2.

Key umpiring mistakes in the fourth didn't help. I'm pretty sure Petty touched that first goal, there was the non-call on the throw, but the biggest one was Jetta's sling tackle on Tim Smith which should have been called a dangerous tackle. Each of those cost us a goal and the third one was when our confidence broke. The crowd found its voice, they had their confidence, we were a runner down on the bench and on a six-day break with too many VFL level players we hit a wall.

We should have had a nice 5 goal buffer though, so that we could afford those things to happen.

Play like that for the rest of the year and we can improve significantly and do far better than our current record suggests.

Played our best footy of the year by far, and lost. That’s life.

I made the call early in the week that the watchability of the Gold Coast win was of no concern because it would be irrelevant to the standard the West Coast game would be played at. Pretty happy with that call.

Big deal, played our best footy but the [censored] who continually miss easy goals should be dropped, this means you Petracca! Useless

Petracca and the coaching staff need to some [censored] out.. there is a very talented footballer there who is just completely over thinking way too much.

What makes me so mad is that Melbourne lost this game, the arrogant whinging, thug Eagles didn't win it.

It’s true, but Petracca and Garlett kicking easy goals would have helped too.

We could have had the game sewn up by the final break.

Was Petracca honouring leads from Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin ...?

Just waiting for that pathetic excuse for a MRO, Christian, to spin Rioli out of the slam tackle that (1) should have been a free to Smith, instead o free to WCE, AND (2) concussed a defenseless player with arms pinned.

The umpire was calling play on, but didnt move his arms. Maybe that confused Smith?

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
