In Round 1 we hadn't lost yet, we're 1-3 at this point.

Round 1 was also a 1.45pm start, this is a 4.35pm start.

There are also even fewer trains running from the SE and E suburbs (where the majority of supporters of both clubs would likely be coming from) than there were in Round 1.

But mainly, we're 1-3 and barely a shot to make the eight rather than everyone's top four pick.

The way he was deployed last night is exactly what we need, it's just annoying that it's taken until round 4. 

Goodwin played him deep on Aliir and it worked a treat. Aliir murdered us as an intercept player last time we played the Swans at the G. 

Everyone knows we're sketchy with our skills, our entries are not always clean and we have players who have a tendency to rush their kicks. This is why playing a monster deep in the forward-line is important for a team like us. He drags away an important oppo defender, it allows for T-mac to get up the ground and it completely straightens us up. 

As long as our mids continue to assess what's ahead, it gives us so many more options compared to playing Weid and T-Mac inside 50. It's a huge change. 

ANB out of the side was also a very welcome change. He was literally just creating more congestion when he was playing. Usually doing nothing when around the ball and allowing his opponent to be a get out option for when the oppo were winning the ball. 

Spargo is a very smart player with ball in hand even if he's not overly quick. He usually always weighs up his options and makes smart choices with disposal. He stays. 

Trac is improving every game now. Just needs to stay as clean as possible. 

If Hunt continues to take his chances, hit the scoreboard and use the ball in a smart way, he clearly stays because his speed and chase down ability is needed. 

I think the addition of Garlett in this kind of a set-up on a big ground like the G could really help too. If he chases and pressures at Casey this weekend, I think we play him against the Saints. 

Forward-line becomes much more dynamic and unpredictable due to short hit up leads from talls like Weed or T-Mac, going long to a Preuss contest, giving Petracca or Melksham a one-on-one chance (both strong in the air) or if the ball hits the ground we have speed in Hunt, Garlett and Spargo to really pressure. 

I'd like to mention that Petracca's willingness to chase and harass the opposition inside 50 was a highlight last night. He worked extremely hard off the ball. 

Whatever happens, the forward line must stay the same for a while. 

Backline clearly needs to change. Oscar. Frost. Happy to play the Saints without Oscar this week. 

Coincedence that we looked so much better off when he wasn't on the ground? 

Preuss's inclusion was indeed a long time coming - agreed. Finally it happened and it reduced Max's load and balanced the rucking demands. I agree that having Preuss forward has the advantage of forcing an opposition defender deep and allows TMac, Weid and Trac crucially a little  more freedom. Reminds me of the Stynes-Strawbs combination of yesteryear. An old winning formula that opposition sides did and will find difficult to counter. I hope Pruess passes his fitness test for Saturday - I am so looking forward to seeing him out on the ground with Max  and the team again.

Looking unlikely Preuss will get up, and it's probably better to get him 100% right for the Tigers (if possible). I think Keilty gets a crack, by all reports he deserves it.

Preuss's value wasn't just being a big man in the forward line that could ruck, I think it was more the physical presence around the ball and the contest. Not exactly sure Keilty provides that same big physical presence does he? Which is not a slight on Declan, but I don't see him just as a ready replacement for Preuss.  

Agreed bring in Keilty. He can give Max a chop out and provide a long marking target, not in the same hulk as Preuss, but another target for our "bombing" game style (whether intentional or not).

I'm not so sure about Lewis given his lack of pace. Good kick and generally speaking hard at it, and by all means we need his leadership, but when you have the likes of Billings, Gresham and Steven as small flankers lurking around the 50, that worries me. 

Jetta if he's fit comes in for surely J or C Wagner, probably Josh as he is the one playing as a defender. 

Jeffy for Spargo? I think we need to see a larger sample size from Jeff. Sucks Casey have a bye this weekend, but I'd be keen on giving him another good game before he get's a guernsey in the senior side.

Not necessarily. It's possible that one of Fritsch or Salem could move up to the wing thereby replacing C Wagner while J Wagner stays in the side. That would leave our starting back seven (assuming no other changes) as Oscar, Frost, Hore, Hibberd, J Wagner, Jetta and one of Salem or Fritsch.

I'm not, by the way, making any claim that this will happen. Just pointing out the possibility.

I'm not sure who I'd rather in the side, Josh or Corey? Maybe Corey's pressure and pace is better, but Josh's skills are better. 50/50 for mine.

I think we must leave Stretch in for at least 3-4 weeks and see what he can do with some continuity.

I would look at Jetta and Lewis into the team for the Saints.

I am not sold on Preuss. While I think he did a good job last week and his couple of goals were good, I see him at this time in his development as a very limited player that we should use in critical circumstances. Against Sydney was the prefect opportunity and the way he was used against Alir was structured coaching at its best. I will be interested to see how he is used in future games. It will be up to the coaching panel to work out the best most effective way he can be used each game. I hope they give him a simple straightforward game plan each week and look to his future development over coming seasons.

If he is not ready for the Saints I would give Keilty a run and make sure he is well briefed on his role. he has the added ability to ruck a little with a good leap and can also have a run down back if required to cover defence.

Would not play Kielty would rather go with smaller forward line on rotations Jeffy, Lockhart et al as Aints have plenty of runners!

I suspect it could be a two week injury.  No surgery at this stage, so must be bruising and strain...  I reckon two weeks, Min'.

I reckon we need Lewis this week to counter against the Saints manic pressure tactics. 

Lew has a calming influence for us, General ling the troops. 

After just the one win for us,  the Saints will be trying to rattle our cage down back, and will be into jViney, etc.  

 

Lew, I think is a must, to be Our on-ground eyes and mouth.   Less so,  Re the Tiges, with their loss of crucial big-men.

Whether he can back up that game with a string of good games or a month of mostly good footy, will probably be a better determinant of how the rest of his career will go if he's given senior recall. If that's too hard an ask for him, then Goody is probably on to something. Recall after 1 good game is almost welcoming the same pattern as before.

Lewis and Jetta are probably the 2 slowest players on our list, other than our ruckmen

It would be suicide to bring them both in against one of the quickest sides in the competition

He not only kicked 2, but even with a messed up shoulder another 2 in the last qtr came directly from stoppages where he just monstered Reid and then Aliir out of ruck contests.  His worth 2 or 3 goals a game even if he doesn’t kick any.
