There are already several threads where we are wallowing in self pity so here’s one where perhaps we can look for some optimism and hopefully history repeating itself...

Melbourne started the 2006 season as a finals fancy but sprung from the gates with a horrid loss to wooden-spooners Carlton, followed by a big loss to the Bulldogs and a heart-breaker against Adelaide.

At 0-3 our season was shot, with a trip to the SCG to take on the reigning premiers, who were coming off their first win of the year against Carlton (Sydney play Carlton round 3 this year as well).

A close, low quality match eventually saw The Dees scrape home by 5 points.

Sydney 13-14: 92

Melbourne 15-7: 97

Melbourne then went on to win 11 of our next 12 games, sitting at 2nd on the ladder before a fade out towards the end of the year.

We are playing very poorly, but no worse than rounds 1-3 2006.  We again face Sydney at the SCG... can history repeat itself?

Small ground between two sides that rely heavily on winning contested ball. Good contest coming. I also think we’ll win this but won’t even be top 10 this year.

Watching the way Brisbane are playing and the health and quality of their list makes me see how far we’ve dropped off the pace. From 2018 We,re effectively missing a fit tmac ,Hogan, a fit viney and a  younger more effective version of jones and Hibberd ....and  a game plan that works. I think we ‘re headed fr bottom 4.

Whilst we are playing well below par at the moment , if we somehow manage to scrap the next two wins against the swans and saints we are still in the same 2-3 position we were last year

So all is not completely lost yet, but it’s hard to see how we can dig ourselves out right at the moment, particularly given the defensive structure issues and lever and may still weeks away from fixing that

Sydney didn’t have Lance [censored] Franklin that night kicking 12 on Omac.

I reckon Frost is the better option on Frankenstein. So to correct your sentence above “Sydney didn’t have Lance [censored] Franklin that night kicking 12 on Frost” ?

PS they did have a pretty handy guy called Barry Hall that night who kicked 3

Let’s face it , Franklin is a poor man’s Shaun McKernan ... right ?

I shudder to think what might happen if we are stuck with unleashing omac and frost against the likes of darling and Kennedy

We will be killed by their linkages and speed, with runners everywhere. The Swans back-up everyone with support and options - their brains think about where and what to play ... forward thinking in most instances. It's been refreshing itself over the past few games, so this match is most likely going to be the premiere, not another dress rehearsal. However, OMac may fire and save the day!

    TRAINING: Wednesday 12th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the scorching morning heat to bring you the following observations of Wednesday's preseason training session from Gosch's Paddock. HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Demonland Trackwatchers were out in force as the Demons returned to Gosch's Paddock for preseason training on Wednesday morning. GHOSTWRITER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Kozzie a no show. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
