Er ...

Most of that list is "Test", so presumably playing. It also includes Lewis, even though he played last week.

Apart from the two young long-termers, list is Jetta, Melksham, Smith and VDB. Plus Maynard who has a week or so with concussion.

er... maybe test, maybe vfl......but still not ready for seniors

by the time they might be ready we'll probably have a few more injuries just for fun

I think someone posted about 427 pages ago that it was OP, which explained why he went back on the ground during the JLT. It’s an overuse injury so sending him back on wasn’t going to cause any more damage. Still wasn’t a great look.

I thought everyone knew it was OP...at least that's what Joel told a premium member's pre-game function before the Hawthorn game. He said "I am in quite a bit of pain" and used the term "osteitis pubis".

So the post 427 pages ago seems to have been on the money.

And as for the article that accompanied the chart above, it seemed to significantly understate the impact of Melbourne's injuries by suggesting Collingwood had coped better because of their greater depth. It shows Melbourne's best-22 missed games are 89% greater than Collingwood's and 63% higher than Richmond's!

This explains a lot.

For all of those waxing on about flawed game plans, coach errors, kicking skills, etc etc etc they ALL stem from the above statistic and the reality that all year we’ve been approx 9 best 22 players down against teams with far fewer of their top 22 out.

Hence the results, hence the collapse of game style, confidence skills etc...

The above stat gives me hope. The above stat tells me this phase is either a statistical abboration or an issue with our medical/conditioning. Both will be fixed.

The above stat also tells me that it’s the Dons  that are the real story in terms of form, game style, coach, as they are crap with an extra 5 top 22 players on the park each week, and only a game (&%) ahead of us.

Of our impressively long injury list Melkie was the only potent scoring forward - that setback killer blow. Here's hoping Hunt somehow develops into a Jack Riewoldt for 2020.

Putting the obvious aside for a moment - can anyone post Vanders games played over years on senior list please?

I find it amazing that some on this site - cannot see beyond a belief that  'whoever is on the park - has to/must be able to perform at first 22 level, irrespective of talent, experience etc'.

The How Sick is Your Club stat - represents a lot of why we are, where we are.

As a club we have been beaten massively by the injury stick... and these are the real world consequences that every club experience....

Agree on all points.

What I'd add is the above list only covers games missed through injury, not the number of players who couldn't build a proper fitness base in the preseason because of surgery or being in rehab. Tmac (despite his comments it is a form issue), Oliver, Melk prior to his injury and Viney have clearly been hampered this season. That's four of our best 10 players.

The pies and tigers do have better depth. Who would dispute that. But both teams had good pre seasons in terms of getting miles into the legs of most players. And besides neither club has suffered as badly us injury wise. Melks latest setback (not back until after round 16 according to the hun) is yet another example.

The injury worm will turn. Too late for this season, unless a miracle happens. But it will turn.

Fitness is another issue.  Facts are facts. Players who have interrupted pre seasons will always struggle to get near their optimal fitness during a season. Too much recovery and too little time to focus on fitness.

Smith injures groin in JLT game, comes back on & plays out game it’s now looking like a16-20 week injury

Melksham injures ankle against GC comes back on plays out game now they’re telling us there’s been a setback it’s now looking like an 8-10 week injury at best

Viney & Vanders ongoing feet problems, Mays fitness.

Seems to be a huge lack of professionalism still at the club & it seems to start with the fitness staff

I'm sorry, but its absolutely mind boggling that both J.Smith and Vanders were both listed as 4-6 week injuries pre round 1 which is still their estimated return timeframe 10 rounds into the season.

Its especially frustrating for J.Smith who looked set to lock down a spot in the 22 yet was kept on the ground despite the fact he was clearly labouring during the Lions game.

That may be so but, at 27 and having played 7 games out of the past 57, you have to have serious doubts re his ability to withstand the rigors of AFL football. Hopefully the club is giving serious thought to paying out his contract if his condition hasn't improved by the end of the season.

Didn’t we just give him a 3 year contract?

I suspect our "injury" list is bigger than told.

Tom McDonald had foot problems pre-season, and still cannot jump properly...means he cannot mark in contested situations, and the failure to not make a 40m kick last weekend is symptomatic.

Brayshaw is probably playing on the wing, because he too is carrying some sort of injury.  Watching him close up at the GC game, he couldn't accelerate to get to a ball in the open, something he would have gobbled up last year. OP?

Bayley Fritsch also cannot kick as far as he was doing last year.  His mind still thinks he can, but the clanger last weekend as an example was because the kick was short.  OP?

The trouble is that these players would have normally been rested, but when we have 17 players injured that leaves us only 4 or 5 to pick from 47, including rookies.  Take out Jordon, Bedford, Bradtke and Chandler as they are too young and one can really see our plight.

We can barely put a team on the park, and cannot rest any of those who need it, and have no option but to play others who are obviously sub-standard.

We are often told that a player is out for 2-3 weeks but we now know that our medical wan.ers really mean 10-12 weeks with a possibly of more. Yes we don't get the steak knife as a freeby. Surely Pert must find out what is going on or what's no going on with long term injuries.

This is really a matter that Pert has to concentrate upon. It's great that he may be working on a new ground and facilities, it's great that he has enriched his profile, it's great that we have continued to slide into the doldrums for one reason or the other since he has taken 'control', yet one might expect that our 'leader' and 'mentor' is working in a capable manner, fully multi-tasking on a range of processes to ensure Club success both now and in the shorter-term future, but where is the evidence? What have been the runs on the board? A public/members' statement or six, please Gary! Stop the descent, now!

Careful.

You're not allowed to bag Pert around here.

They'll all tell you it's a complete coincidence and a freak occurrence that we're 3-7 with almost the worst percentage in the league and 90% of the list going backwards., in the time he's come on board.

Same? Was in my car on Monday and had MMM on JB, Billy brownless and that purple twit were on; i was p*$$#@ off how JB was laying into our club. I hope, Gus, gives uncle twit brains a spray, after hearing the dribble coming out of his mouth.

Oh and just before that they were going on about how the tigers have so many out and can still win games.

Makes me ?

This.

In the Wagner's, Lockhardt, Spargo, possibly Stretch, and possibly Smith we have five players who are good VFL players who would not be in the team if we had even a third of our injury list available.

Add players like Lewis, Petty (who may not be ready) and Garlett who would not be selected due to form if others were available and that is closing on half a starting 22 who should  be playing VFL.

That is a bridge too far, pure and simple.

I just find it ridiculous that so many that people, including people paid to comment on football, don't understand this is the reason we are not winning games of AFL football.

One reason is so many footy media people are ex players and the culture of not blaming injury for poor performance is hard wired in of the DNA of football clubs and footy culture more broadly. Stoopid is as Stoopid does.

Was in rehab group for the training session with calf strapped, but moving relatively freely. Did plenty of jogging and kicking. Suggests a bit of a corky only, ice is consistent

But wouldn't surprise if the glad wrap prank turns it into a 4-6 week scenario given our season!

You can add Jetta, Brayshaw (back), Harmes (shoulder), Jones and Petracca who all had significantly interrupted preseasons as well.  Basically our entire midfield bar Gawn and his form proves a point.

And when Lever, May and others, who have been out for a long time come back they will be nowhere near their best.

The majority of our ills go back to the fact that around 13 of the players that played in the Prelim had post season surgery.

We should start planning for 2020, simple as that.  And frankly I find the criticism of Misson baffling.  Nobody knows the real situation regarding the injuries.  Smith has OP, a repetition/overuse injury which a lot of players have struggled with.  It wasn't the Brisbane game that injured him.  Misson was at Sydney when they won their flag and they had virtually no injuries that year and he was at St.Kilda after that and was highly regarded.  It's just silly to suggest that he doesn't know what he's doing.

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
