Seriously though, what is more likiley:

A) Us, die hard melbourne supporters, over rate Hogan's value and/or Melbourne's power in this situation.

B) A neutral Journo who studies all clubs, players and trades, AND whose livelihood depends on them being good at their job, being untruthful on purpose.

BTW, i think Hogan was worth pick 6 & 7, or 6 and brayshaw/cerra.

Yeah for the most part I'm sure you're right - this latest piece by TM however is just indefensible. Have a read if you haven't already.

Wasn't L Franklin's Sideney deal for 8 years?

Yep. Buddy is in a different atmosphere to Hogan and even that is a dumb and risky deal. Sydney wouldn’t have done it now had they known that COLA was gonna be taken off them

Didn't Freo have a snap board meeting at some point last week? I guess they at least considered the 8 years

Honestly, what I think is more likely is that someone offered Morris the inside word and he took it. How else would he know what Jesse's manager asked, or that Freo are bristling internally when people say they are bluffing?

I agree with you that journalists are unlikely to be untruthful on purpose. However, they all have their sources, and it seems Tom is only reporting one side of the story.

I think the Bell has tolled on this deal. Can't see it happening but I could still see us acquiring Steven May.

In regards to getting a trade done without Hogan picks. What happened to the "Gold Coast need players not picks" media discussion a few months back and us offering some players with a 2019 1st round pick?

Cmon man... 8 year contract we could demand 5 first rounders or no deal. Lol

And you think that would stop the media from rolling his name out every slow news day or when they need more clicks out west? Of course they would.

Nixon played for Richmond. He did OK.

Actually he played for Carlton, St Kilda and Hawthorn, never Richmond.

I don't really follow why the article was bad.

Freo wanted Hogan. Freo gave Bell a job. Bell felt hogan wasn't worth 5 & 23 if they also had to sign him for 8 x 8mill?

That seems logical to me. 8mill over 8 years is a risky deal to give anyone.

Hogan’s manager is deluded. Nobody is worth 8 years. Nobody! That is an insane risk to take in such a combative sport, especially for someone with back and now foot issues.

Maybe they were trying to play on Freo’s desperation and see how far they can push their luck. Maybe he doesn’t really wanna go there and is using it as a way to block the deal or raise his price with Melbourne.

Either way this whole thing stinks and I would be very annoyed with Hogan if his unrealistic management stand in the way of our list improving AND he refuses to sign a long term deal with us.

He’s 23, it’s not completely crazy to sign him until he’s 31. And that was reported as the managers first offer.

A 5 or 6 year deal at 1M is about what I’d expect Hogan to sign with Freo for.

We gave Lever 4 years 800 and that’s before he’s in his prime. Plus key forwards get more. With the cap rising 20% in the next 4 years the 1M seems correct.

Really I think this is Freo looking for deflection. Blaming the manager is an easy way out

What today’s contract ‘revelation’ tells me is that Hogan is happy to stay at the Dees and in Melbourne, but has put to Freo that if they were to make him an obscenely good, too good to refuse offer, then he’d go.

Demonland hasn’t changed much. A few very good and sane posters but still too many fanboys (and girls) who get hurt derrières when confronted with sober assessments and clear eyed analysis.

Yep too many soft,1 eyed suppprters that believe every player on our list are A graders & All Australians, yet cant see that in the end over th e last 10 years Freo have outperformed us.We have been a basket case for 60 years yet on this site its almost as if we are invincible & no one dare question it or say otherwise

Yeah, it's kinda looking like a positive for us. Maybe we will be able to extend his contract..

$1m pa is pretty standard for a top forward.  An with inflation it won't be much in years 6-8.

But 8 years!!  Can't be too much wrong with his foot!!

Edit:  Update: https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl-trade-jesse-hogans-large-contract-demands-contributed-to-fremantle-rejecting-melbournes-trade-offer/news-story/578fbad1c64f774a808b80e3b8707900

JESSE Hogan’s camp asked Fremantle for an $8 million deal over eight years before the Dockers emphatically rejected Melbourne’s trade offer.

Fremantle was prepared to consider a three or four-season contract, but considered eight years as a leap of faith too far.

"...the Dockers spent significant time weighing up whether Hogan was worth it all. In the end, he wasn’t and the club’s statement was not a bluff".

A Hogan trade is not dead in the water, but it appears Melbourne will have to buckle first.

Huh?! So Hoges contract demands mean MFC have to downgrade our trade demand? Wtf?

That is something you negotiate with Hogan you pelicans, nothing to do with his trade value.

Edit - a few posters already noted the stupidity of the article.

but, and if true (dubious)

isn't that why they have negotiations. each side starts with their optimal position (ambit) then they decide somewhere between. who's to say hogan's mgmt wouldn't finally agree to 6 years...or 5 years.....

4 years for such a big deal and on a contracted young player seem a bit too little to me given the whole context

Yep. If you want to chase me EVERY YEAR, then this is what you can pay. Otherwise leave me alone.

This is not W.A. Going home, this is directed squarely at Freo

Too many players in limbo:  Neale, Hogan, May, KK and possibly Beames (Lions won't let him go if they don't get Neale).

Freo causing quite a log jam so something needs to happen soon.

Anyone ready to guess when the AFL will get involved and kick Freo into gear or call in the mediators for the Neale and Hogan trades.

I dont believe the AFL should be allpwed to get involved. All the players are contracted & obviously chasing money but using family etc as they were happy to pen new deals not long ago.If they are going to get involved it may as well just be a free for all like the NRL where players can go wherever & whenever they want

Funny, out of that I got the impressi9n that Hogan isn’t that keen to go, the Dees are more keen he does, so Freo don’t want to pay as much as they might have. Hence the insane contract Hogan is asking for.

It’s like a few builder mates I have, they get asked to quote for a job and don’t really want to do the job for different reason’s. So they will over quite by 30% or more on the usual rate, if the client says yes... happy days but not a job they were chasing.

Completely agree. Really a wierd article . This little excerpt says it all

"Hogan stands to make approximately $900,000 next year at the Demons so a jump into seven figures is not overly significant, but the Dockers began to smell a rat when Melbourne then came and asked for two first round selections as well."

I mean what did they expect?  Jesse has been greedy in going for that length of contract...but Freo could easily say to his manager "nope its strictly 4" without getting into ANY haggling with the MFC itself.

The trade process has built into it a mediation phase for when clubs cannot agree on a trade.  I think It is essential to have the mediation process so that difficult trades get done and so that the current Freo position causing a log jam for about 6 players is cleared.

IIR the last time it was used was the Ryder trade to Port.

What a crock.. how many million dollar players aren’t worth two first round selections... definitely a slow news week
