Brownlow Medal 2018

I’d just like to note that someone deacribed Gus as “not AFL standard” in the prelim match thread.

Was it the same poster that wanted him traded end of season? Or was it delisted?

Probably some jerk.

2 in top 5.... Great effort.

Did Braysh missing out on the first few rounds cost him the medal? ;)

Yes missed the first 4 games and imagine if our game plan included the rule that every get out of trouble handball is to go to Gus as that seems to be  the Dorks rule with Mitchell.

It begs the immediate and obvious question.

Should it be decided by head coaches alone? Just roll the coaches award into the actual Brownlow.

Eighteen coaches with intimate knowledge of who really impacts the matches versus the umps who year on year make huge blunders like the one you’ve highlighted.

One group are focused on who is impacting and determining the game, the other on just who is infringing.

How the votes should be awarded are 80% by the coaches for the best player aspect and then give the umps an ability to moderate it according to who they thought played fairly and in the right spirt.

Gawn v St Kilda

25 possessions, 11 marks, 39 hitouts, 10 votes by the coaches.

No Brownlow votes.

Shocking. 11 marks. 5 contested marks. 11 contested possessions.  Standout game v Saints. Ridiculous

Congrats to Gus, he's had a great year after having to battle to get back into the side but once he did he was fantastic. It was almost like having a new recruit with him because I think quite a few (not me though) had written him off due to his concussion problems. I think he should have another great year next year and then be seriously considered for leadership group maybe even VC to Jack by that time.

Max was never going to win it, he's had an awesome year as evidence by the coaches award but this medal isn't a ruckman's medal, they don't understand the subtle things that he does but 20 votes is still a fantastic effort. Clarry only getting 13 is a bit mystifying, hopefully it'll drive him to prove himself even more next year.

Does make you wounder if Max rubs too many of the umpires up the wrong way.  Coincidentally it was against St Kilda last year that the umps awarded free after free against Max for trivial ruck infringements that were only explained post game.

Second highest votes overall with 93, behind the filth who got 96.

Only club with two players in the 20's

Nah, they’re just completely mid focused. It’s a shame.

I just realised the Gus didn't even get an invite to the ceremony! ?

Well done AFL, your third place getter wasn't even there!

One for the trade thread. How good was Whitfield this year? I could see him owning one side of the G running from halfback or wingplaying only on the members side in red & blue.

Midfielder and top 4 award. What else is new?

I was actually glad to see Paddy Cripps poll so well. He had a great season in a tire fire of a side.

The only reason we got to where we got to this year was because of Max Gawn's hitouts "to advantage" of our other midfielders

The only reason Hawthorn got to where they got to was because of Mitchell's number of kicks "to advantage".

Why didn't Max win?

Well done to Angus and Max.

Having said all that, if you had to take one player out of any team this season and have the most impact, it would be Max. To some extent, that's the nature of the ruck role, but that's no reason why his influence shouldn't be rewarded! The lack of votes in the St Kilda game in particular is just jaw-dropping.

Anyway... congrats to Jetta for the Community Award (he's an even better human than he is a footballer, and that's saying something!)

Congrats Gus and Gawn on finishing in the top 5 that's some effort GO DEES!

Thats classic.

The AFL really is run by fools.

I’m amazed at how well you guys remember who played well in what games. I’ve got a pretty good memory but I reckon I’m doing alright when I can remember whether or not we won the game, let alone who played in it and if they went well. It shocks me every year.

You've done that for a while lets be honest !

Well done Gus finishing 3rd in a Brownlow. It is an amazing achievement considering what you have been through. Keep that helmet on at all times as you have an advantage  for the umpires to see when your going at it.

Oh! did Razor Ray give you any  votes?   I suppose he might of been thinking of how to put himself on a pedestal.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.
