Whilst at his best he would've helped us there's clearly 2 issues that lowered his value:

1. He clean snapped his leg in half and that's not the kind of injury you want for a guy who's entire game is reliant on his running. He's not a great contested ball winner and he's not a good ball user. If he's not out running his opponent he's not helping you win.

2. In late 2016 he signed on for a further 5 year contract that incorporated the last year of 6 year 6 million dollar deal with a new 4 year 500k per year deal according to reports. Maybe he had 500k left on the old deal, maybe it was 1 mil left on the old deal.

If the Giants wanted much needed cap relief for 17/18 included in his deal then there's a lot of that money left over in 19/20/21. It could easily be as much as 800k a year for those 3 years. I haven't seen it clearly stated one way or another how much he was owed but my guess is somewhere between 600-800 per year.

My guess is we would've struggled to afford him and a lot of other Victorian clubs would struggle as well.

Agree gws are proper [censored]. Hope Cameron is enjoying his 1.4 mil per year while he wins no flags. Not even putting in on field.

Bad news is our rivals are stocking up on gws talent and we are not

Whorethorn paid a future 4th rounder....

that’s the same as collecting him up from the nature strip with some hard rubbish...

Still can’t get past him telling a dying Jim Stynes his staying a Dee..When he had no intention of staying.. Tells you what sought of bloke he is..

This deal makes a mockery of the whole trade system. Should be worth a first rounder. Has an ankle injury but he’ll be fine in 5 months.

Why the [censored] would gws not ask for more? And don’t say salary cap as they are holding firm on Shiel.

[censored] joke

Perhaps dumping Scully gives them the room they need to keep Shiel

But yeah, on face value this trade beggars belief

He could be the steal of the century, or nothing, but not a bust for the hawks, has cost nothing, a future forth round that will be passed up. Are GWS on a rebuild, they are shedding everyone.

Not sure how a player that good can go for so little, even with an injury issue.

Cracking post SWYL.

Four year deal for Voldemort. No way hawks do that unless his ankle is ok

something fishy goin on

And to top it off he signed for 3-4 years so his injuries must be fine. Whole thing stinks and is very fishy.

If Scully ever makes it back onto the feild against us, I hope his entire body is smashed, not just his ankle.  Viney, Oliver, Brayshaw, Vanders, Jetta, Harmes, Melksham, Hibberd, Jones - just line him up and treat him like a human pinball or rag doll, like some of the hard but fair hits that Nev, Vanders and Lewis did on Selwood, Mitchell and Worpel during the finals.

Just looking at Scully in a Hawks jumper and he is even more hitable and despisable. Turd brown strips suits his persona perfectly.

Mostly the NQR.

I hate Hawthorn

i hate S$$$$$cully

perfect match

future 2019 4th round pick

wow

GWS must have really hated him

i want Callan Ward for a future 3rd Round pick

The long term contract could be an understanding by the medical staff that he will still require a lot of time with the rehab group in 2019 and for such a nothing pick they can just sit and wait with him.

If they gave up a higher draft pick there’d be expectations for immediate impact, but with a future 4th rounder (incredible) they don’t have any reason to push him.

Heard him interviewed on the radio yesterday; pretty clear that he holds little or no affection for the Dees.  Talked about how difficult the booing and money bags stunts when he played us was. Feelings mutual. Interestingly he does keep in contact with Max (a little bit)

Even if he did come back and play for us, I'd still probably boo him.

No way.

As for those comparisons to the Lever deal, there is in reality no comparison. Scully leaving was not just about money - that happens every year in football and we need to cut professional footballers some slack. But the fact that his dad was scouting for GWS and getting the trade set up in the background while MFC was doing all it could to keep Scully - that is unforgiveable. The deceit was the issue, not the money.

If I reflect back on this, it was probably also about the timing.  The MFC was probably at the lowest point it has been in quarter of a century.  We were such absolute poo back then, that the only thing that gave us hope was that the elite young tallents that we had recruited and were looking like we could rebuild a team around.  Scully fed that hope all year with his optermisitc statements about the club, the wanting to be a one club player thing etc.  After all that buid-up his defection was a kick in the guts when we were already down.

As you say, his actions since, including his move from GWS  (where he said at the time he really wanted to be a part of developing) have clearly shown he was lying through his teeth and that all he was motivated by was the money, which only reinforces why he should be perennially despised by the MFC and it's supporters.

In other news, Hawthorn have been rumoured to drop their lucrative Tassie deal to sign sponsorship deals with Chiko Rolls (front of jumper), Big M (back of jumper) and Four n' Twenty pies (shorts).

This also comes alongside the rumor of Phat Phil getting the job as Chief Commercial Officer at the Hawks.

Wasn't that Chief Catering Officer?

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • GAMEDAY: West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?
