If we do play in Sydney week 1, I suggest jumping in early to get flights.

All the frequent flyers (me included), will be on the Qantas website trying to score freebies with points.

The real question is, fly in fly out, or fly in, stay the night so you can drink post match, then fly out?

Hopefully we win on Sunday and get to play at the G.

It will be a Night game and fly out option is not on due to airport curfew. Need to stay unless driving back.

Loser standing small ...

As it happens, I'll be in Sydney the weekend of the first finals. Needless to say, if the Demons are playing there, I'll be there (+ 3 offspring... all Demons' supporters).

Dees 80% likely to play Geelong at the G during the day!

I hate night games!

I'm being selfish but I would much prefer a night game because I'm over in London. Really would prefer not having to wake up at like 5-6am for our first final in over a decade!

Warning THIS IS A RANT.  I have never been to a final before.  My husband (hawks) has been to a zillion finals plus 4 grand finals.  You know what he said when I told him I would be road tripping it to Sydney if we end up having to play there?  "You aren't single anymore, you have a family & kids to look after.  Plus your team is not the only team in the finals (i.e. if you go to Sydney I have to stay home & MIND MY OWN CHILDREN & hence will miss out on seeing my team play finals".  My response "ok ok, we will cross that bridge if it comes to it, stomped out the room & yelled BUT I AM GOING & YOU CAN'T STOP ME....!!!  Bloody selfish poos & wees supporting husband.....  Rant over.  Thanks for listening my fellow demons :-)

Go Deeby, I'm with you on this. When we have won 12 premierships since Hawthorns last I will agree with him.

NB:- in 1964 Melbourne had won 12 flags - Hawthorn 1

               2017 Melbourne 12 - Hawthorn 13

Toughen up hubby, time to look after your kids, go Deeby!

Your first mistake is marrying a hawks supporter.....

My missus WAS a norf supporter I told her I would buy her what ever she wanted from tiffany and co to ditch the [censored] jumper and get a dees one.

She now wears the demons jumper proud up here on the GC every game day with out question. I have also been given the all clear to travel to where ever I need to watch a final this year.

My problem, I dont want to miss the granny so I dont want to fly to melbourne early just to watch us knock off the cats.

Please tell me the children are little dees???

Wouldn't go astray to beat GWS by 50 plus either.

Tell your hubby this sort of rubbish might have been acceptable when we last won a flag. But not in 2018.

Even if we play the first final in Melbourne you should book a beaut room at the Pullman (the old Hilton), have a slap up meal at some flash restaurant (but not with him - dees fans only) and then before the game a big buffet breakfast before strolling to your premium seat ta the g to watch us smash the Cats.

Get ahead of the game and book a room for the following week and hope we play the hawks and make sure he knows he has to look after the kids (because you are more organised).

Out of interest.... Have we ever played at the Sydney Showgrounds?

I can recall playing GWS at Manuka but cannot say I can recall a Showgrounds game. Mind you GWS v MFC matches were never big on FTA.

Yes, we've had some stinking bad performances out there.

In 2013 we let GWS have their only win of the year, and they steamrolled us in the last to win by 6 goals.

In 2014 they also won by 5 or 6 goals in the wet, however I think we had 1 goal on the board at half time.

Won't change our position on the ladder though, we will finish 5th regardless of margin.

Would be a great confidence booster though !

GWS V Melbourne week 1 (if it happens) may actually be at 3:20pm or 4:20pm Saturday Sep 8 rather than 7:45pm.

The AFL likes to have 2 Saturday games, and a possible schedule could be as follows:

Thursday night - West Coast V Collingwood

Friday night - Richmond V Sydney

Saturday twilight - GWS V Melbourne

Saturday night - Hawthorn V Geelong

If we happen to play GWS at Kebab Stadium, what day will tickets go on sale for MFC members? Is it likely to be sunday night at the conclusion of the game, or more likely to be Monday 9am?

Edit: Pointless post. My apologies. I found the info on the AFL site site. Says Tuesday 9am

Time to put the foot down Deeby

So it's pretty much Geelong or GWS first game unless something silly happens to Collingwood or Hawks vs syd is a draw?

Would not want to be playing Freo at over there after last week. Expect them to really take it to the filth.

I hope that they bury the filth. Be wrapped if we play Tigers Round 1 of the Finals!

I would be so happy to make you happy. I think our boys would be feral if we met the Cats in a final. Defeat would just be unacceptable to them.

Surprising this year, we all wanna take on the top team. Now

Thank you all for your words of encouragements.  I particularly liked your suggestion Binman about a night at the Pullman.  Yes I should have known better than to marry a hawks supporter.  But hey, can't win everything can you.  Re my kids, no way in hell would they ever wear the horrid brown & yellow.  NEVER EVER EVER.  Enough of those around my neck of the woods.  Enjoy this exciting time demonlanders.  And keep up the (mostly...) brilliant posts.  Roll on the finals!

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

The Demons hit the road in Round 8, heading to Perth to face the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium. With momentum building, the Dees will be aiming for a third straight victory to keep their season revival on course. Who comes in and who goes out?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
